Good point.

Didn't he use a lot of fuel on orbit and was stranded at sea for hours?

Yeah. He went against mission protocol and over used his monopropellant and he ended up way off course in the middle of no where. It was luck he survived reentry because he had no way to correct his orientation if he was off.

Well, if he had a Command Pod Mk1, he could have used the reaction wheels.

But, seriously, he was LUCKY.

Scott's my second favorite, because he was more a victim of management. He was distracted by the science experiments he was forced to do and he couldn't control his altitude. He also made the RETRO officer angry with his line "I didn't know where I was and they didn't know either." Gene Kranz would latter use the RETRO's hatred of him to pull a prank by saying that the Retro commands were going to come from Sealab.

What is up with always wanting to rank things, inevitably oversimplifying matters and removing any nuance? That is really not helping anyone or anything.

I'm not ranking any astronaut. I'd say in fact, by making a simple poll, I know who's the preferred favorite. Not who's better, hence he title of this thread, who's your FAVORITE Mercury astronaut, not who's the best. This has nothing to do with ranking, if you wish to say that the most POPULAR is the best skilled flyer, then that's your opinion, like everyone's opinion on whos the coolest astronaut.

No offense, but we lost some pretty skilled flyers in T-38 accidents, so it's not like the ones on the list ARE the best. Their just the ones who were lucky enough to get mentioned :P .

I like all of them, they were all unique and had special character traits! :)

Voted for Alan Shepard, since he's quite an intelligent guy (the other astronauts said he was the smartest one!), and he had a funny quote right before the launch of Freedom 7.

"Don't mess this up". I'm familiar with that line. Also, he we the first American astronaut, AND he peed his pants. No joke, he wet his suit.... Look it up.

I'm just sad for Malcom, nearly 60 votes... And not ONE for him. Sad...

We should change the name to Scott Carpenter.

People don't really know him by "Malcolm Carpenter".
