R.I.P Desktop PC (long live works laptop.....)

My desktop pc finally met its demise last night whilst moving my computer desk to bleed the radiator in the room.

The scene:

Desktop comp ontop of the desk (way too big to fit anywhere else (under or inside the cupboard)), large computer with a radiator and liquid cooling tank, very expansive machine (£1400 roughly) but aging a bit. I tried going under the desk but the extended socket is directly under the radiator plug, and remembering from a few years back............"something something water bang" Instinct told me 'lets not do this over electrics "LIVE or Not"', so I started pulling and slowly dragging my desk out, completely oblivious to the fact the extension for the socket's cable was just about the on/off pipe of the radiator.....

The Result:

"SMASH......glug glug glug" is all I heard, slowly opening my eyes knowing the result... the cable tightly wrapped around the radiator pipe and the pc just laying there oozing liquid, it was the sorriest scene I ever did witness, as its life force was slowly leaking on the floor I thought to my self, meh not that bad it was pretty old, but then it dawned on me, 'I cant really afford a pc of that power'.

Then an epiphany, 'my works laptop' I suddenly thought it has a developers spec, no NVidia card by any means but 8gb ram i5 2.5ghz chip and a half decent on-board 4500 chipset, so after the recent demise of my desktop, im currently (without their knowledge) using my laptop rom work installing steam and some other games until I can replace my machine, will it run?, ill post my dxdiag to give a bit more info:

D'oh, I've had days like that! >.<

Have you ordered some more coolant liquid, or not even going to try to see if it will live again?

I occasionally run (on extremely low setings) KSP on my quite old Sony Vaio Core Duo... runs as bad as you think it would, but it runs lol!

would imagine it would run pretty well on an i3, maybe with the graphics tweaked down a bit, or maybe run in windowed mode...

I'd also post this in the support/help thread too, more advice can never hurt :)

yea, id take everything out, inspect it, if its wet let it dry for a while. if the is any moisture on the power supply pull that and let it dry for several days (do this anyway just to be safe). then test it with a multimeter (there are tutorials on the internet for this). inspect all drives, cards, and boards and connectors for moisture. if you have an anti-static heat gun, use it (just be careful, they can melt solder if you get too close or too hot).

water cooling rigs never made a whole lot of sense to me. ive never needed more than the stock fan that comes with a retail cpu/gpu. but if thats not good enough you can always get an aftermarket heat sink that is several times better without the risk of moistening your hardware. then this begs the question: why use water? they make special purpose non-conductive coolant fluid just for this purpose, though ive seen case modders just use cooking oil (which doesn't sound too smart to me seeing as its flammable).

why use water?

Because it is basically free and is about the best coolant you can get.

they make special purpose non-conductive coolant fluid just for this purpose,

It's a lot more expensive than water, but then, $20ish/liter is nothing in terms of overall cost.

though ive seen case modders just use cooking oil (which doesn't sound too smart to me seeing as its flammable).

Cooking oil is super vague, there are dozens of oils that could describe, but for most the flash point is around 300°C. Any computer is likely to overheat and crash about 200° before that.:)

with tdp continually going down in newer chips, i dont really see any reason to invest in liquid cooling. i did a fancy air cooled rig awhile back and that turned out to be a waste of cash in the long run. if i ever did do a liquid cooled setup, i would definitely spend the $20 on the low conductivity coolant.
