Space X - 7 Kerbal Dragon Rider - Falcon 9

MJ, will you make a Falcon 9 with the non-circular placement of engines?

It's just that you made a Falcon 9.1 really, but the ability to choose between the two types would be awesome, especially

since in the re-usable Falcon video it was the 9.0 variant show.

The first version I made had the square pattern of engines, so yeah

I can release a version with that engine pattern.

Will work on it this eve.

When you do make the v1.0 make sure you shorten the first stage. SpaceX lengthened the first stage, upgraded the engines to have more thrust, and re-arranged them into an "octa-web" for the v1.1. :)

Majorjim, the Dragon V2 is being unveiled right now! It's quite a lot different from the unmanned version. It has fins, solar panels built in surrounds the service module, and a stretched capsule sort with SuperDraco engines. You should also try using the shielded docking port as it would be quite accurate. No pictures as of now cause it was just revealed. :)

Hi Woopert,

I just woke up to pictures of it! Will def make the changes! She looks amazing, I cant wait to see a RL powered landing of the pod.

Haha, I thought the same thing! Brace yourself, Dragon V2 replicas are coming! :D Here, the video so we can all get the details:

And now seriously, the fins in the service module. If I had to guess, I would say they are there just to slightly increase surface area to put the panels on. But only half the ship being covered means Dragon V2 has to maintain a fixed roll attitude during the flight? I doubt you guys know, but it's the thing that jumped to mind as I saw the video.

Rune. That, and what exactly are the MMH+NTO combustion byproducts.

Hi Majorjim -- I lost the files for the pictures (I deleted the screenshots folder without realizing that the screenshots were there) but I tried to make a Dragon V2. The fins look pretty good, and I replaced the docking port, but there are a few quirks that perhaps you could work out. File below. :)

Thanks Woopert I will have a look when I have finished making Imgur albums and uploaded and written about all my craft for the repository..

So much to do!

Here's a SpaceX Dragon logo flag if you want it. I have been strugglebussing to build a decent stock DragonRider V2, hope yours goes a bit better.

Thanks for that! Yeah I haven't started yet so I'm not sure how it will go.

I think it will be similar as I want to keep the 7 kerbal crew capacity.

So fins for the hitchhiker container and a nose job for the pod.

Busy with my repository but will have a go soon.

I hated the hitchhiker didn't have even close to the correct proportions (significantly smaller trunk, with a larger pod) so I tried doing two of the 2 man lander cans clipped inside of each other for like two hours before realizing how damn heavy they were. 8 rockomax 24-77s can max out at about 300 dv with a >1.25 twr after you add the backup chutes, RCS, battery, wings, docking port, and solar panels. Obviously with the chutes, it's nbd, but I actually wanted a super-draco style powered landing, so...there's that.

Hated the Hitchhiker? Its perfect for a dragon craft! The proportions are nearly bang on..

also the RL dragon seats 7. If you want 7 that's the only sensible way.

And remember that all KSP craft recreations are approximations.

Good luck with it!

A cool trick: if you clip a cubic strut inside of a Hitchhiker can you can place winglets on it and only a portion will be showing, like on the Dragon V2. (I modified Majorjim's ^^ Dragon craft, link here: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/78847-Space-X-7-Kerbal-Dragon-Rider-Falcon-9

There is so much space X now!

I will try to get around to it tonight Woopert. I like the way it looks with the fins! I may try to shape the pod too.

The hitchiker is perfect for the original dragon, but it doesn't match the proportions of V2. I gave up on the double lander-can method, wasn't worth my time to try and tweak a perfect lander with such a small margin for successful powered landing with all the chutes and everything dropping TWR so low with the eight 24-77s.

I see.

As I said before with craft like this in KSP you have to compromise somewhere. You could go for looks and just have 3 crew or you can make it not so easy on the eye but with 7.

I still feel that my Dragon craft with the V2 bits added is a good analogy of the V2 Dragon.

The only problem is the distance limits in KSP.
