depends on what part of the banned you are in. woodwinds and strings might actually be pleasant, but ive heard terrible rumors about the percussion group. of course you might get to play the triangle, and thats not all bad.

Well, it depends on where you're banned from:

  • Forums: You can still load the forums, but you'll receive a message that your account or IP has been banned instead of being shown the forum index. If your account was banned you can log out and continue to read the forums, but we do check for banned people that make new accounts, which can cause your IP to be blocked.
  • IRC channel: You can't join the channel, simple as that
  • Twitch: You can't chat with your account anymore, but still view the streams
  • Wiki: Either you can no longer edit pages or the only thing you'll see is an error message telling you to get out

Well, I was banned for a month for racism (DISCLAIMER: I'm not racist, I just really like racist jokes, asking me to stop them is like asking me to stop breathing). Here's how it went:

I couldn't even browse the forums while logged in. It only showed that I was banned and when the ban would end. Therefore I had to log out to browse the forums. Obviously I couldn't post like that, which wasn't such a big problem until I saw someone asking for a mod that would add a note pad in the game. No one else seemed to know the mod that I was using (and still use) so I decided that the ban be damned and created another account just to help that guy. Then I begged some moderator (I don't remember who, I think it was the one with a big smiley as an avatar) to approve that post (when you post for the first time, a moderator has to approve that post for it to appear) or at least suggest that mod himself. Unfortunately that didn't happen. Fortunately my ban wasn't extended and someone else suggested that mod anyway. Then it went on like it had been for quite some time, I couldn't post, but could read the forums. Sometimes it was slightly annoying, most of the time it just kept me away from pointless arguments, I guess. Then it ended, I could post again and catch up on my inbox. One thing that did happen was that after the ban was lifted, I didn't get back into the forum games. I used to be pretty active in these, now I occasionally check them, if I'm really bored.

So I guess it's not as scary as it seems, but it's bad when you really want to help someone that other people can't help.

As near as I can tell, you really need to go out of your way breaking the rules here to get banned. Minor violations result in warnings, and the mods don't seem to be overly enthusiastic with the ban-hammer. I have a hard time imagining someone being surprised by being banned.

You should really rethink your attitude about this. Telling racist jokes makes you part of the problem, not the solution, whether you consider yourself racist or not. There's enough other funny things that you shouldn't need racism to amuse you.

Indeed. The issue isn't that "oh, I'm not actually like that, I'm just joking" -- the issue is that you are bringing up the subject in a derogatory manner unnecessarily and for no real reason other than to make a cheap joke. In doing so, you're reaffirming to any actual racist people that such discourse is normal; they think you're on their side.

And yes, we tend to be very sparing about the use of the Banhammer, much as I do like polishing it every now and again.

Calm down, I never claimed that the ban wasn't justified or anything. Also, I'm not planning to make any more of these jokes here, I can satisfy these needs on Funnyjunk now that I have learned the lesson. I only said what I said here because if I didn't say what I was banned for, people would ask about it and if I said it was racism, but didn't say that I'm not racist, then many of those that read this would probably have negative feelings towards me, to put it nicely enough to not get another warning (my first one was for claiming that someone was engaging in reproductive activities with his mother. I just can't follow the rules properly, sorry. Also, anyone else have that "extremely long parentheses" syndrome?).

You thought I was going to make a racist joke here, didn't you?

I wasn't really talking about racist jokes on the forum or reasons for banning, more that your apparent love of racist jokes helps perpetuate racism wherever you do it. Just a friendly observation that racist jokes aren't harmless, even if the intent of the joke teller might be.
