When are we making 5 meter parts?

Recommended Posts

What on earth do you NEED 5m parts for? What can you not launch into space with the new 3.75m parts? You can make an SSTO that launches 100 tons with the new 3.75 parts, how can you need more power?

Unless you are Whackjob, but then at some point he will hit the Chandrasekhar limit if we keep making larger parts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chandrasekhar_limit

In fairness, the same argument could have been made against 3.75m parts before they were introduced, and against 2.5m parts before that. Bigger parts means fewer parts means better performance, even if you don't need to launch bigger payloads.

Besides, absurdly big rockets are fun in and of themselves.

The 3.75m parts NASA pack parts work fine as the lower stages of a stock Saturn.

The only use for 5m parts that I could see would be to launch a manned mission to Duna without any orbital assembly or a nuclear thermal rocket. Maybe that's something people need, but such a launcher is not high up on my list of priorities.

If you don't want to wait, download NovaPunch for 0.23.5 They have the 5 meter parts and adapters with fuel in them.

Only thing is that you have to brace them well as the attachment points are quite weak.

The 3.75 parts work fine but they don't really make a good Saturn V because the proportions are all off. Even using procedural fairings you only get close to the right look, even if you can get the right functionality. the only place the saturn v im working on now isn't right is at the S-IVB, because the parts are the wrong size starting right there. No big deal, but im sure we've all made a Saturn V and it'd be nice to do it right with stock parts.

As for your second point, you can do that mission profile with 3.75m parts. I know because I just did.

5m would just be OP. It's already easy to build a vehicle that lifts 100 tons+ into orbit without the need for radial boosters with 3.75m parts and 5m would probably allow 250t+ to be lifted into orbit without any boosters. It would just take away the challenge of building things.

Manned duna missions with return are quite possible on the older parts-single launch, no 3.75's needed.

Went to Duna and back (from Kerbin orbit) recently on 1.25m* parts and a LV-T30, had 7 FL-T400's for the transfer stage, a separate lander, just one Kerbal though.

*forgot the 2.

I did my manned Moho-mission (Lander+Return) with 7 1.25m Tanks and Nukes and no fancy stuff like homann trajectories or any form of planning. No problem at all. Still, personally i'd like to see 5m parts, if just for insanities sake. There is no 'to big' in Kerbal Space Program.

Yes please to 5m parts. Reduced part count is always welcome on my ol' machine.

...though could we call them "Whackjob Sized"? I imagine he's been having all sorts of fun with the SLS bits. Arkingthaad 5m edition would probably be an insanely delicious thing.
