[1.12.X] Tantares - Stockalike Soyuz and MIR [26.0][18.12.2023][Things are happening]

Beale

Recommended Posts

As I have an entire hour trapped in a waiting room, perhaps I can throw out a few ideas of what I'm doing next, in a big not particular order list.

- Finish PPTS.

Any chance that this includes Angara? :)

Then, possibly and in no order:

- More Venera parts (Needed Orbiter)?

Yes, please. :)

If you go for static two-sided panel (unlike usual panels that have to rotate/be rotated with whole craft), they can have foward antennaes, i.e. you can trade real functionality for real overall shape.
I've seen that done before....infact, you could animate the antennas separately from the panels. I think(?) it was HGR or Bobcat's Soviet pack....
HGR's. It is not sun-tracking but makes up for it by being double sided. Bobcat's was single sided, static, and without antennae. Raidernick used static panels with static antennae.

Closer description (or image?) of how these work? Interesting...

A few other suggestions, mainly cleanup.

• Turn the 0.625m APAS-89 into an APAS-75. It'd be the perfect size, and wouldn't be as redundant.

• Turn the 1.25m TKS docking probe/drogues into CBMs. I'm currently using the CxAerospace CBMs, and they're great.

• There needs to be a smooth way to attach a 0.9375m docking probe onto the end of the TKS docking module. Currently, there are no suitable adapters. It's always a bit awkward.

• Mir 6-Way node needs some help. It's always been a bit funky. Even if it meant more polygons, could it be made more spherical? End-caps for it are also a must.

• Gemini needs some help as well. Its sizing is a bit awkward, and it's docking probe needs a counterpart. We don't need a bespoke Agena as you can already make that, but it's docking port is somewhat needed. If you do decide to make any changes, refer to my scaling guide for it a few pages back.

I think that's everything I can think of. I'll almost always prefer polish and part culling over new stuff. Heh.

Nice ideas, docking ports especially, I'm not very happy with my models APAS at all, they need to be given a little more detail, more like the model originally developed by Gooddog15

TKS is awkward currently, I will look into this (simple fix for 0.9375m ports hopefully). :)

Gemini scaling is noted a little strange, I will investigate maybe what can I do (shrink for small 1.25m?), bleh it will break too many things.

Well naturally I'd reiterate what I said about adding an R5 0.9m rocket to the LV pack and changing the SAS and tech tree balance to hopefully make early game a little more clean but as for the answers you are actually looking for...

Since they seem to be done and well received I see no harm in implementing CQ's parts next.

the poisk module would seem to be just as fast to implement considering the speed you turned those progress modules out.

LK I'm not so sure is necessary it's currently functional, fitting, and IVA'd to boot, and since its hardware that never flew one can argue we can be looser with the historical accuracy and all. If anything it can wait in favor of expanding and fixing part sets that are less far along first...

...Like PPTS for example though my focus on the left end of the tree recently means I haven't given it much thought.

I don't use fobos enough to say if it needs a rework

venera's texture sheet is looking pretty empty and the parts would be useful for other soviet science probes due to their modular seeming nature

Fuji sounds fun with you saying you may go wild speculating with it and it looks a bit dated and out of place at present(it's like the only one with a separate heat shield).

TKS rework for similar reasons to LK doesn't seem all that necessary. Maybe the IVA's? A future revamp wouldn't change the dimensions so they'd be future proof right?

There are even more salyut parts in real life!?

TMK only existed as concepts that widely varied in appearance. If they ever got around to actually building it then probably (like going wild with the japanese Fuji speculation and blending with real HTV) the russian TMK probably would have just wound up being made out of real surplus Salyut and TKS bits like Mir and the ISS russian segment so only thing we'd really need is some form of plausible large interplanetary propulsion (be it conventional, NTR, or electric)

EDIT: Oh! oooooor you could make a new larger than salyut station part or parts that cover TMK, skylab, and the apollo applications venus flyby all in one set! still using saylut mir and tks parts with a new propulsion set would probably be easier and get much the same effect.

oh yes, you can probably add the R5 parts to the list, probably.

Venera approach I think is best to cover generic Mars and Venera probes of 1970s, they have similar designs at a glance.

Fuji is beyond hope, will be completely revamped into something shiny.

TKS is future proof, pretty much all the parts are now (scaled to orthographics), so save breaking shouldn't be much of an issue anymore.

Salyut can have extensions, longer cabin for Salyut 6/7 example :) Larger 3.75m cans could be cool and interesting!

Hello Beale,

I'd like to add your works by less model-bound parts.

A handful of parts as a preview. I work hard on the textures.

Wow, very nice parts!

Beautiful texture work too :)

Ehi Beale, will you in the future get back working on VA IVA? That's a nice capsule not only for TKS, but for my entire space program :)e poi è bellissima...

Soon

Hey does anyone know if the RO configs work yet?

I think they are currently out of date a little, my gratitude to Niemand, but it is not a fun or easy task.

Sorry! :)

Launch clamps?

Could be interesting, I have never tried this part type before.

Something.

Is this a revamp of the Mir Docking Module, Rassvet, or Pirs/Poisk? If it's Rassvet or Pirs, I think it should be either grey like the other Mir/TKS parts, or white with the ATV's thermal blanket texture. Of course, if you do the thermal blanket texture, all the other Mir/TKS parts ought to be changed to use it as well.

Hey Beale! The new Poisk/UDA looks pretty cool, though I don't think solar panels need an overhaul, current Soyuz ones are fine as they are right now. :)

I'd like to inform that new RO configs have been pushed to the repo already, so when RO updates a lot of new parts will be there. Actually, there is a _very_ embarrassing story, the update I made two months ago wasn't commited to Github for some reason and I didn't double check that, so basically all that stuff was (and currently still is) 0.90 configs. But now I made a whole lot of changes, including fixing the scaling bug, adding British engines to the set etc.

And, to get my reputation after that slightly improved, I started working with NathanKell on overhauling the RP-0 tech tree and adding Tantares support, allowing to experience a truly hardcore feeling of career-mode in Realism Overhaul. :)

Ah okay!

The HGR panels only accept power on one side (Very annoying limitation of stock solar power module), the part is still rotation for correct antenna orientation, it is just not as noticeable because the panel is textured as dual-sided. It's a very smart way to do it, but I would much rather have one-sided panels.

It's meant to be the Ãœøр docking module, but I might consider a less bright colour scheme.

(Fun thing - the ATV's texture is a cream colour, but it does look white in game!).

Solar panels may not be changed so much, aside from a quick cleanup of texture :)

Antenna proves difficult to implement.

Hello Beale,

thanks for the praise of the textures. From your quality I am still far away.

In the coming days I will open my own little package of parts which in particular are intended to complement and enhance your Mod.

With your permission, I will continue to be oriented to the appearance of your mod.

A part that I have long been missing, an optically suitable stabilizing fin, in particular for the Soyuz-styles rockets.

Here's a suggestion:

Nice new Mir Module. Also, if they can't rotate isn't that a good thing? Do the panels even rotate? I like Stockalike mods based on real things, and a solar panel that can't rotate isn't that bad. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that to get power from a fixed panel to make it face the sun. :sticktongue:

Yes! Yes!

Do you have plans to do Pirs, Poisk, and better Mir-2 trusses/solar panels/antennae?

Many thanks.

Pirs and Poisk are in design, More Mir-2 bits are on the cards but not immediate.

Of course you have all permission! I cannot claim to own any texture style as I am imitating stock parts

Fin looks great! would be very useful to prevent some flipping problems I have.

Generally I will use fixed panels 100%, but it seems option of rotating panels is nice to have for others :)

OK, good to know about the HGR panels. I've used them a couple of times on prototype Advanced/Blue Gemini's, but had not delved into their performance. Effectively you have only one panel turned sunward at any given time. Heaven help you if two simultaneously operational panels are required.

Raidernick indeed uses separate left and right panels.

Soyuz Solar Panels: Huh. That's a strange limitation. Can you show us in Unity why this is? I'm kinda curious now.

TKS: TKS could use some texture cleanup to match the TKS pod. What's your idea for the docking compartment and docking ports?

Salyut: A Salyut 6 & 7 cabin extension would be awesome! If you're considering 3.75m parts, go SkyLab. SkyLab scales perfectly to 3.75m in KSP. Be prepared to go all the way with SkyLab if you even make parts for it. Heh.

Venera + Probes: More probe parts would be awesome of course. How do you feel about aeroshells for the Venera probe?

Gemini: Gemini just sucks in KSP. No one can do it right because of the odd scaling ratios that always make off-sizes in KSP. There are basically two options for Gemini: 1.25m capsule with 1.25m – 1.5m SM, or 1.5m capsule with 1-25m – 1.875m SM. Those are pretty much the only ways to get the thing looking remotely correct. I favor the 1.5m capsule option, only because Titan II GLV scales to 1.875m in KSP. Big G would become a 1.5m – 1.875m part. You have my sympathies. Gemini is such a pain.

MonoProp Boxes: Wow. I didn't know I needed these! Could they double as KIS containers? That's basically what they were IRL.

Mir Docking Module: I like the 0.9375m version, but it does contribute to the part bloat problem. Is there any way you could make it compatible with both sizes?

Why can't they just keep the 1.875-2.5m Gemini?

What if he added a low profile 0.9 to 0.625 meter adaptor and got rid of the parts with 0.625 meter ends? If someone wants to use the 0.625 meter port, all they have to do is put on the adaptor and the part works with the smaller docking port!

More's the pity, because the Gusmobile is so cool! And the applications are diverse. We should blame Gus Grissom for having the audacity to marry a space capsule with a Corvette. I've played about with a Munar Gemini programme, but it restricts me to the FASA bubble for the most part. I should revisit it since I've got a better handle on the conjectural hardware that would have made things work.
