Kerbal Stuff, an open-source Space Port replacement

I have a very small opinion about this matter, but the way I would be most comfortable with is you providing an interface for modders to access ProjectWonderful, and then the advertising money is between them and you don't have to be involved at all; I feel you probably will like this option in theory too because you being involved is potentially dangerous.

I think ads would reflect badly on the KS image, and its mission to be an alternative to Curse, even if 100% profits went to the modders. Also, I think public pressure from users against modders who utilized it would cause unnecessary problems.

Users have the right and I would even say obligation to use adblock soas to not experience unwanted, distasteful, and potentially harmful fourth party content; If they have any respect for content creators they should manage adblock to permit ads from creators they like and sources they trust, which is why I suggested ProjectWonderful which I have as a content consumer benefited from greatly over the years.

Given the common availability of this tool on nearly every platform, I don't think users have any right to complain about creators getting money for their work. And I trust that SirCmpwn has access to the skill, either in himself or those around him to integrate ads into the site in such a way that would not be detrimental to the site as a whole.

There will be no ads on any mod site I host.

I attempted to speak with you privately about this so you could save face, but you haven't responded to my queries.

We've talked about you issuing ultimatums, and it's not acceptable. We work on Kerbal Stuff together as equals or we don't work together at all. If you had simply asked, I value your opinion enough to say "okay" and drop it there. Do not push your influence further.

Is there any interest in letting modders optionally show ads on their mod listings and giving them 100% of the revenue from them?

Please, no. It will only hurt the reputation of the site.

I don't have anything kind to say to somehow who chooses Curse because of a pittance of ad money, so I won't say anything else.

Novapunch is at #2. I might get enough money to buy a cup of coffee out of it. Not worth the hassle.

Also: DO NOT HAVE THIS ARGUMENT HERE. Edit that junk out.

Have it in private, or don't have it at all. This is aimed at both of you.

From someone who witness the birth of internet and the "good old" time of public domain software, I just see money spoil and waste all the good spirit it was. People made things just for fun and also sometime to prove they can do it or even it can be done. Now it's all about this terrible thing, $ $ $ $, even KSP itself fall into the trap (even if it's virtual money). And having ads and the stupid ad servers which are unable to do their job properly (have you seen some "waiting for ad.adumbserver.something... to respond" on the bottom of a page in Firefox for many seconds ?). So I stick to this old spirit of fun only.

People who want money just have to work for it .

And active downloading. My users need a reliable host now. Doesn't matter if this outage isn't the result of a staff squabble. Kerbal Stuff is down. I'm spending my morning spare time sorting out alternative hosting instead of making stuff.

First of all, I won't go forward with ads, since the consensus seems to be against it. I guess anyone who just wants to make money from their mod will go to Curse.

More importantly, the status of Kerbal Stuff. First of all, Kerbal Stuff is back up: https://www.kerbalstuff.com. Also, my last backup is about 11 hours old, which means that anything that happened within the last 11 hours has been rolled back. I know at least one new user signed up who has lost their account, and any mods that published updates during that timeframe will have to republish them. I apologise for the inconvenience.

This morning, I woke up to discover that Kerbal Stuff had vanished. The server was completley gone, not responding to pings or anything, and a bunch of emails in my inbox led me to believe that it had been an issue for several hours. I called in late for work and started to figure out what's going on. For those who don't know, Majiir has been hosting Kerbal Stuff for the entire lifetime of the site (and I am very thankful for that). Recently, Majiir and I spoke to consider the future of Kerbal Stuff and how it would be administered. We agreed to both have equal authority over the website's administration. The last thing I heard from him, however, was his post last night, issuing an ultimatum that clearly flies in the face of what we had agreed upon earlier. I attempted to contact him privately to resolve this issue, via IRC and email and finally forum PMs. Unfortunately, he did not respond to any attempt to contact him, so I submitted my response in this thread. This is the last time he and I talked, draw whatever conclusions from that that you like.

As of this morning, he has left the modding IRC channel we usually talk in (for the first time in months) and has still not responded to any of my attempts to contact him. All these things considered, I took steps to move Kerbal Stuff away from his hosting under the assumption that he would not be immediately available to help resolve the downtime. As of this morning, Kerbal Stuff is hosted on my own servers and as of a few minutes ago my backup has been completely restored. This may or may not be a temporary arrangement depending on what actually happened to Majiir.

The important part is that Kerbal Stuff is back up and healthy.

So, I just woke up and haven't had my coffee yet. Not all of this needs to be public record, but since the discussion is already here...

  • The outage affecting my servers has been resolved. The trigger for the outage is unknown; it could have been caused by a large spike in disk activity, or it could simply have been random.
  • The outage affected all of my virtual machines, not just KerbalStuff's, which is why my IRC bouncer disconnected.
  • I didn't respond to you because you sent me messages on the forums, IRC and e-mail within minutes of each other, with vague things like "it is urgent", and I was going to bed. You know what's urgent? Something's wrong and the server isn't responding! You know what's not urgent? Getting wound up about a forum post.
  • If you really want to drag private conversations into the public, I'll be happy to link the full log. Spoiler: "equals" is not a term we agreed on.

I don't pull the plug on servers or IRC bouncers over disagreements. That's not in my character.

I appreciate that you've resolved your server issues. Consider how things looked from my perspective and it should be clear why I choose to restore Kerbal Stuff to my own server, at least as a temporary measure. We can discuss details more in private. To any onlookers, I wouldn't worry about the fate of Kerbal Stuff.
