.24.2 Realism Overhaul Craft Repository

No, it looks like it's the same. I just wasn't sure if one was more up-to-date than the other.

I got worried. But apparently the latest update BROKE FASA for me so I can't load up my craft!! Im soo sad. I hope it works for you because now I have to rebuild her. =( Oh well, that's life (besides itll be fun)!

Is that the same GEM40 config file you posted above? Just making sure. :)

No, I changed the GEM 40 thrust curve. Previously it was

				key = 0 0				key = 0.03 0.36
key = 0.1 0.48
key = 0.16 0.69
key = 0.23 0.79
key = 0.29 0.89
key = 0.35 0.96
key = 0.42 1
key = 0.48 0.99
key = 0.55 0.96
key = 0.61 0.9
key = 0.68 0.84
key = 0.74 0.76
key = 0.81 0.69
key = 0.87 0.56
key = 0.94 0.44
key = 1 0.38

Now it's

				key = 0 0				key = 0.03 0.4
key = 0.04 0.70
key = 0.1 0.79
key = 0.16 0.83
key = 0.23 0.85
key = 0.29 0.89
key = 0.35 0.96
key = 0.42 0.93
key = 0.48 0.89
key = 0.55 0.87
key = 0.61 0.95
key = 0.68 0.97
key = 0.74 1
key = 0.81 1
key = 0.87 1
key = 0.94 1
key = 1 .97

Here's a video of how they act during launch:

I'm still playing with the thrust curves, these GEM 40s last ~75 seconds instead of 63. I'm trying out increasing the thrust to above 1 just after liftoff to decrease burn time, but it's not easy since the key is based on %fuel remaining so it requires (ugh) calculus to convert to burn time

I made a full-size Saturn V with all the correct dimensions and all correct burn times for each stage! I haven't checked for the total mass, but I don't think there is much I can do if the burn times are already accurate.

An updated FASA-Based version of this is coming soon. Procedural Fairings makes replicas difficult.

In this gallery, I did not follow the correct ascent trajectory, I was looking to take screenshots of all the stages.

You can download the Saturn V here.

The Test Payload used in the pictures can be downloaded here.

During flight, the vehicle is very wobbly due to NovaPunch's J-2 engine being quite small. The whole area around it is strutted-up, but that can only help so much.

Or you can get FASA or OLDD Apollo:) along with RO...of course may still need some updating here and there. FASA is the more accurate in terms of dimensions.

FASA crashed my game last time I tried it, but I'll see what happens when I only install the engines included.

If you provide a log (as the OP tells you to anyway), I can see to it that whatever is crashing your game, if RO related, I'll fix and get a release out pronto.

Ok I re-installed FASA and nothing seems to be wrong.

I was hoping that FASA's J-2 engine would be the correct size (something like this), but it is slightly smaller than NovaPunch's J-2.

--EDIT--

I also just noticed that FASA's J-2 doesn't have a connection node at the bottom.

I ended up just giving NovaPunch's J-2 a "tank butt" using a conic tank with the Atlas texture. Doesn't help with stability since I can't put struts on the edge of interstage fairings, but now it look more like the real version.

So how is the FASA J-2 not sized correctly with RO? The connection node, or lack there of, yep, intentional, however due to FAR we will be including it again.

Since FASA has pretty much everything I need to build a Saturn V... I'm just going to switch to that system and drop procedural parts' tanks.

PP tanks are good for testing, or building your own rockets, but I have a hard time using them for 'replica' launch systems when things like FASA and OLDD Apollo, Proton, N1, etc exist. Still didn't answer the question of how you think the J-2 is sized wrong...

I was mistaken about that. Most of its apparent size comes from the "tank butt."

Agreed. Tank butt is a problem. Fwiw the nova punch is now in the process of being redone and some resizing will be done. The J-2 will shrink ever so slightly among many other changes.

Ok sounds great! I really appreciate all the effort you put into making RO as realistic as possible. :)

Good luck with getting that update out!

OK I think I've put together a nice Rocket with Satellite on top that can get to Geosynchronous or Geostationary orbit using MechJeb to do 100% of the flying. I even took it and landed the satellite on the surface of the Moon to make a Moon relay point.

This is while using the following mods...

Generic Mod Enabler - v2.6.0.157

[D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Kerbal Space Program\MODS]

RealSolarSystem7.2

Advanced Jet Engines

DeadlyReentry

EngineIgnitor

RealChute1.2

MechJeb2

RealFuels

FerramAerospaceResearch

KerbalJointReinforcement

RemoteTech

TacLifeSupport

TweakScale

RealismOverhaul

ProcFairings

Here is the craft file >> MoonSat.craft

Here is some information in these screen shots that you might want to gather about MechJeb settings and stuff. Also, note the flight time it took to get to Geosynchronous orbit (5.5 hours). You can use that to help you figure out where to place the satellite. You will also need some basic communications already set up to stay connected to the command center. I launched from South America because it was only 5.2 degrees incline.

Showing type and build of rocket.

Here I was out of communications for just a bit, notice that MechJeb still carries out the command once communications are re-established.

screenshot8.jpg

screenshot9.jpg

Note the mission time and showing a basic sat network. I still have some planes to set and I'm still just playing around. Just wanted to show that only two sats were used to get it into position. I wasn't keeping this sat, it was just for making this presentation. You will need at least a way to communicate on each side of the planet from where you launch from to set a geo sat.

BTW, forgot to mention 0 key activate the satellite antennas and then you need to go to map screen and point two of the dishes to already orbiting sats to set up a flight link (BEFORE LAUNCH). Then just turn on MechJeb.

COMMSAT: A Efficient Launching Rocket of Six Minisatellites Pack

140828110131251300.png

This small launcher is capable to placing an array of six communication satellites in a ecuaterial orbit of 12,742Km hight (Earth radius x2), taking off from the ground station of Cape Canaberal.

Stage I:

-1 burn only, gives a first impulse to 280km / 320km hight.

Stage II:

-1 burn only, parkink to low orbit of 280km / 320km hight

Stage III:

1st burn, set apoapsis to 38,522 Km just at ascending node.

2nd burn at ascending node, to set a transfer orbit of 38,522Km x 12,742Km (2+1/6 resonant) and 0º inclination.

Use RCS for fine tuning orbit (38,522Km x 12,742Km, 0º).

A geostationary satellite target helps to determine the position of the ascending and descending nodes.

Stage IV:

at the periapsis of each orbital period release 1 minisatellite and sets the circular orbit for this in 12,742Km x 12,742Km.

Hey guys, I did a lot of real life launch vehicles, and I posted it to the RSS subreddit. Now I have come back and am letting you guys ask me for any of the rockets shown in these pictures: http://imgur.com/a/VYoNE

Wow looks like you put a lot of effort into making those! How long did that all take??

I spent hours on some (ones I actually used in my missions like the Delta II and Atlas V, also some of the craft shown were already existing but remade to truly match specs) but when I decided to do a whole rocket yard I spent about 20-50 minutes on each, including testing. I did however spend like 3 hours on SLS because of some scaling problems and contradicting info sources.

I think re-doing them wont take as much because of how simple everything is now.

Edit: I just realised what an epic necro this post is. Apologies.

M'kay, here are two small rockets for when you only need a tiny satellite in orbit and/or you want a Redstone-derived launcher. Payload is about 100-120 kg to an equatorial orbit from Sriharikota.
