3d printed Kerbal Spacecraft feature

Recommended Posts

Hi there. I`ve got a genious idea:P for developers team. although dont know if it is doable).

Is there any magical way to add following feature - such as saving spacecraft created in game into any format readable by 3d editors. so it could be possible to print your craft with 3d printer. that would be awesome!!!

or sell the parts... so you buy and glue them togheter to recreate the craft in game... :P

if squad released model kits i would loose my mind! I would also be broke and my wife would leave me... :(

hmmm but still model kits of parts would be well received merch and would generate more funds for squad.

r4pt0r yes you get the idea,

Ideally, it would be great if you could save the ship or detail directly from the game in format ready for 3D printing. dunno if this is possible? but I believe that if one import details to game then one can export it back )))

as simpler solution - If I understand it correctly - modders and developers themselves make parts for rockets (tanks, engines, etc.) in 3d Max or another 3d editor. after which pats are imported into the game.

so it would be great if modders or developers could provide access to "original" model in the right format. may be sell them in shapeways or thingiverse - one by one or as a set of parts, (like the standart parts from KSP all at once). standart Parts is enough to build any rocket you want. plus modders could add with new parts.

first you build rocket in KSP game, play with it enjoy the ride, then if you like you can recreate it in real life and put on the shelf and have memories).

that would give many opportunities - developers and modders could add variety of spare parts, make some money selling Parts (models) for rocket, players could download and 3dprint these parts and enjoy building real KSP rockets at home. thus bring KSP to real life. - everyone is happy.

*.craft to 3dmodel converter would be nice, but it will require vanilla game and mod resources, and they are property of SQUAD and modders. So it's up to SQUAD to decide.

Other option is to send your .craft file to SQUAD and they will order 3D model and send it back to you for a fee. But it will work only for vanilla installs, and post offices are terrible in some countries, and they can even stop and seize "rocket parts".

It can be other solution, like converter are sold for you to be used locally, but on condition that you do not use model files for mass production.

P.S.

As for me, I do not have access to 3D printers locally, and do not like "dust collectors" anyway.

.....send your .craft file to SQUA and make them print it. think it will take too long and way to expensive cause as it will include shiping costs and possible mail related issues.

I like the .craft to 3d converter idea though. i would buy it.

Is it possible for Squad to consider making this kind of converter or selling parts for 3d printing?

To create a .craft file, you need the game+mods for it anyway. Just have the software use the game installation to make the mesh. I doubt there would be legal problems, even if you were to use the game assets and send it to a printing company directly.

The whole ship is a bad idea since you´d have to use SLS (selective laser sintering) rather than FDM (fused deposition modeling) because of the geometry. Overhangs will not be that easy to print. And not to speak about struts...

The best way is to print every piece for it´s own. (and maybe putting magnets in^^)
