Well, there is a handy little mod called kTunes that lets you pause and skip music that is playing in the background (for example iTunes or Windows Media Player) without having to Alt+Tab if the buttons are not on your keyboard. For turning off/on your in-game music, you'd have to change that in the settings. Hope this helped!

Winamp (and many mp3 players) supports global hotkeys.

I actually wrote my own mp3/ogg player that supports alt-shift-key combinations to pause, skip, and a few other lesser needed functions.

Granted, sometimes the game will interfere with these but it's better than loading the music into the game and taking up your limited available memory.

semi-related, someone mentioned steam had a built in mp3 player? IDK about it, but would that work for OP?
