Happy Mole Day!

As the 23rd is just around the corner, I wanted to wish everybody a Happy Mole Day! I still remember my old chemistry teachers obsession with this day. We didn't do anything all that class except eat, and watch Bill Nye the Science Guy. I just wanted to spread the joy of 6.022 * 10^23, and the wisdom of the Avogadro Constant

:D

For those who don't know a mole is a unit used in chemistry to calculate amounts of stuff that can completely react with other stuff without any leftovers. Simply weighing or measuring the volume is not enough because there's no relation between those units that would be consistent for all chemicals, or any of them for that matter.

1 mole = 6.0221413x1023 molecules of a substance (or atoms)

So if I understand this right, if I eat a potato chip in chemistry class that had one gram of lead on it, I would have 0.00482625482625 moles of lead in me?

Haven't you watched the early-90's safety video? No eating in chemistry!

I'm referring to the one with the perv watching somebody shower, if anybody has seen it and remembers.

I too have a science teacher who's into Mole Day. He tells us that every year on September 23, Grandfather Mole burrows into all of the good scientists' homes and leaves gifts and presents for them. Most of those presents seem to be periodic tables and papers with interesting facts about moles for the students. All we do is learn about mol and moles the entire hour! He also does something similar for Pi Day, where the math classes bring in and eat pies, learn about the history of pi, learn different ways to find pi, see who can recite the most digits of pi, etc. Overall, a great science and math teacher!

For pi day, assuming you have learned the Unit Circle, bring in a whole pie, but claim you have two pi. Easy extra credit.
