I don't post here often, but I feel like this is the kind of movie that the people on this forum would love. Here's the trailer that came out today:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXwichuGW28

It's directed and co-written by Neill Blomkamp, who not only has a hilarious name, but directed District 9 and Elysium. Elysium was... alright, but District 9 was one of the best sci-fi movies I've seen (if you haven't seen it, find a way, it's amazing). He seems to be really good at blending a great emotional story with a bit of optimistic but realistic sci-fi.

There's not a whole lot to say about the movie yet, but is anyone else excited? I'm excited.

Looks interesting. Definitely something to look forward too. Especially since Neill Blomkamp's fellow South African Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team, 2013 Europa Report, Elysium, Maleficent) is playing one of the leads.

By the way, what's so hilarious about Neill Blomkamp's name? He's South African and his surname is Dutch. Nothing strange or remarkable about that. The only true hilarious thing is how most Americans pronounce Dutch names.

I loved the Elysium artwork. The story, well, it just did not work out like it should. The trailer looks good, though the participation of Die Antwoord (Watkin Jones and Anri du Toit) suprises me. I am really curious how that pans out.

You're right. I was just trying to make a juvenile joke that only made sense to me because I'm American, and hilarious would have been too strong anyway. My bad, I tend to forget how the internet is international.

On a different note, I wonder how successful this movie is going to be. While people on this forum obviously are really into it, do you think the general, less science-minded/crazed populace will like it? I hope so, but have no clue.

Watched it. It could've been a lot better. The idea is so great, but Blomkamp failed to produce a powerful enough story. It's a sentient robot and the dominant feeling of the movie is disgusting filth of the Johannesburg gangs. Except Chappie and his creator Dean, no one there is likeable. Not even Yolandi. BTW she and Ninja can't act.

It made me kind of angry because it deserved much more. Character development is very poor for both Chappie and others.

Also, dealing with a robot gaining full sentience was so poor. It's the crucial thing and it has been fast forwarded.

Go, watch it. It is not bad as the reviews say (31% on rottentomatoes, come on?!), but I bet most of you will leave the cinema with a quite bit of feeling of incompleteness. The basic rhythm of the storytelling is there, but it's not rich enough.

I was very excited about this when I saw the first trailer.

I saw another one just recently and guns were involved and it looks like the robot gets involved in a battle against an uprising of other robots? Or... something.

Dunno, I felt a bit less enthusiastic at that point. I was intrigued by the social/psychological plot, but I'd rather not see it degrade into a primal survival story. There's a reason I actually prefer Short Circuit 2 to Short Circuit. SC2, even with the corny diamond heist thing, is a lot more Asimov.

Yeah, I'll second that.

The characters were not compelling and the plot had holes big enough to distract me from the story.

Chappie himself was wonderful. Good acting, personality, and special effects. It was everything else about the movie that was wrong.

Best,

Agreed, they had some great opportunities here for some BIG philosophical questions, not only for AI but for the Mankind/God relationship as well and they totally blew it.
