Has anyone tired apsaragus staging solid boosters?

Recommended Posts

I know from a fuel line standpoint you cannot, but what I did is I asparagased the thurst limiters on 8 boosters. 2x100% 2x75 2x 50% and 2x 25% values using criss cross method. What I found out is you can gain about 50 delta ;.; HAHAHA! However, Id say this was a success? Maybe your mileage may vary? Post your results here :) Videos too!

I've been experimenting with thrust-limiting SRBs recently too. My standard light lifter for probes and things has four SRBs, and depending on the payload they're throttled at 100%/50% or 50%/25%. An ideal flight for those things sees me launch with the liquid engine throttled down to zero, going to 100% as the first SRB stage flames out and then easing back. By the time the second SRB stage flames out I'm in to my gravity turn and going full throttle anyway. Works fairly well.

Yes, I do this all the time. If you do it carefully, it can definitely help keep an even TWR and squeeze out a few m/s Delta-V.

In career mode, it's by far the cheapest to use SRBs to get your orbit above the atmosphere, and then circularize with a small engine.

Slightly related, I'm watching NASA's stream of the Orion launch right now, and thought it was interesting how the Delta IV Heavy uses three identical engines but throttles the centre one back during launch.

whats that red fire doing on the left of the pad? some sort of launch bon-fire for the front row ticket winners?

Depends on the booster and the mission. The Minotaur design work well for a Mun mission and beyond. The small two stage liquid fueled for orbiting.

This is actually a lot closer to the original idea for asparagus staging, no mention was made of pumping fuel though the boosters were liquid rather than solid.

Take a look here.

It could be done by using boosters with different fuel loads as well.

Interesting. Somewhere in my hundreds of YouTube videos I hadn't unlocked fuel lines (or much else) yet but wanted to go ExtraKerbin SOI, so I did what I called in the video "Asparagish Staging," and it was essentially this. Cool to know I was closer to actual Asparagus than what we all do normally.
