Saying that China is a country of "commies" and German National Socialist camps were found on Pluto is not anything the real NASA would say.

Yes, NASAofficial is a troll. Unfortunately. It would be nice to get NASA's opinion on some of this stuff in chat...

Why are you guys even watching/listening to these social media twits? Any idiot can get on social media and spout and become a star... look to more credible sources, like the live conference on C-SPAN2 which is happening right now.

Around 3 hours... one way.

I believe it's 4,5 hours? I could be wrong of course. I also believe ping is a two-way communication (one side says "hi!" and waits for the "hi to you too!" from the other side) so that would put NH at a ping between 6 and 9 hours.

Anyone fancy playing a multiplayer game with NH? You may experience light lag :P

EDIT: 8h, 50m, 38s ping. Thank you Awaras.

You guys watching the NASA thing still? Do you guys here that guy say he was secretly working on a Pluto lander?

Yes. He also stressed that first years and years of study of the data would be done.

8h, 50m, 38s round trip.

Thank you.

I was just rough guess off the top of my head on that. And I did mention 'one way'.

Yes. He also stressed that first years and years of study of the data would be done.

And then years and years of development, followed by years of building and testing, followed by years of flight, followed by a failed thruster causing the lander to leave a crater in Pluto. In all seriousness, I wouldn't be surprised if we landed a lander there in the 2040s or 2050s.

Downlink speed ranges from 1000 to 4000 bits per second.

I was quite surprised to hear that information, that downlink speed would be affected by its position in the sky. This tells me that they have inadequate global listening coverage.

Judging by the second yes I think he was somewhat serious, though I can imagine a NASA team member have personal dreams and hopes that might never be realized. For someone in the New Horizons team, Pluto seems the most important body to visit. The rest of NASA, the world, or more importantly, politicians, might not agree.

However, if there ever is a time to consider and dream about subsequent missions, it is now. Interest is huge.

Why inadequate? It works. Operating more sites means spending more money, likely meaning running the sites at lower costs and thus inferior equipement. This in turn means covarage would not improve as much as you would expect, or at all.

You can bet the international science folks thought about this long and hard.

Yes, inadequate. I have the impression they're working with a single ground receiving station. Other missions have used multiple stations with similar funding.

As for 'international' science folks?... last I heard this mission was NASAs, the US alone.

Check me if I'm wrong here Sandy, but Hohman to Pluto is a 90 year trip, and you'll need Hohmann to land, no?
