Have you seen the recently released video of Falcon 9’s stage one hard landing? We felt it was MISSING something. Thankfully, so did matt01ss…

As Whackjob once put it, "I do not fear failure. Failure is Data."

There's a nice big data point for them. C'mon, they've done too many world firsts on their first try. I'm surprised this didn't come sooner. As long as nobody is dead and the payload itself made it to space, no harm no foul.

Heh, awesome. Looks like the rocket managed to pretty much kill its horizontal and vertical velocity just above the surface, but the lack of hydraulic fluid meant it had no way to right itself to a vertical position. Hence the sudden increase in horizontal velocity just before "touchdown". :P

Can't wait to see their next attempt. :)

The fins wouldn't help it to right itself in this situation, they are for when it's flying, not hovering. To me it seems like the rocket over- or under-shot the barge because the fins stopped working, and it lost too much altitude trying to remain on the trajectory with just thrust vectoring and three working engines. Basically, if the fins were working, the rockets would only be killing velocity instead of steering on the approach. Without fins the rockets also had to steer, and the resulting thrust decrease made the whole thing dip too low and clip the barge when it tried to right itself for the landing. Even the approach angle was pretty good - if it had just ten meters more altitude, I think it could've swung past the barge, and returned to land correctly. Assuming it didn't run out of fuel as well by then. :P
