Shift + Tab != turn on engines

Recommended Posts

In games running from the Steam platform, pressing Shift + Tab opens the interface that allows webbrowsing/chatting to friends from an in-game overlay. Using this key combination in KSP turns on the engines which can ruin such operations as docking. Please don't turn on the engines when Tab is pressed at the same time as Shift.

It's not Shift + Tab that's the problem, if you hold shift, the engines throttle up. You then press tab but it's too late. I've run into this issue before but I can't see Squad changing the default, you can remap the throttle yourself in the input setup or you can remap Steam as well.

I don't use Steam, but I have had this problem while using Map View as well... in Map View, pressing Tab switches focus to the next object, and Shift-Tab switches focus to the previous object (very useful for cycling between various planets and moons). This has caused me serious problems in the past when I'm looking over various parts of the map and then suddenly realize I've had my engine turned on for an unplanned ten second burn...

Solution: press "." (on the number pad, not the main keyboard) to hide the nav-ball. If the nav-ball is hidden, the game should ignore throttle commands and you can press shift all you want. (I know this works in map view, at least; not sure if it works when not in map view but it's worth a try.)

After this happening many times, I too shut down (off) my engines after making my major burns for a trip. One of the first things I do when I jumpt to any craft is look at if the engines are on or not. Additionally, I just hit escape everytime I want to use the screenshot uploader, or view the overlay in any way. Botching your mission enough times makes this something you really will remember. :D
