interesting use of parts I thought about using Structural panels, I beams and RTGs to make a sauna for my Kerbals, because nothing says "Warm and Toasty" like Blutonium-238 :P  or I could replace the RTGs with an ant engine firing at very low thrust so there's a tiny plume of exaust hoping its a hydrolox engine because I just made for my Kerbals a relaxing steam room. :cool:

It's stock, but it wasn't there, originally.  The exhaust trail was a relatively recent addition-- 1.0.5, I think.  So if it's been a long time since you used one, that could explain it.

I was really happy when they added it; I love ion engines (for certain specialized uses), and the glowy exhaust makes them more satisfying to me.
