I've thought about doing this on my Surface Pro 1 over Wi-Fi as KSP would probably melt it if I tried to run directly. I'll give Spashtop a try, thanks...be fun to run KSP while waiting for the next lunar eclipse (just checked it's next Feb for me so heat probably won't be a problem though it's penumbral but the magnitude over 1) .

1.1.3- Having Terrible Time
kBob replied to ghost_sox's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
@ghost_sox Hmmm, well I've been doing flight sims since I had an instrument only sim on my TRS-80 (so you can probably guess how old I'm feeling). As to your problems. First, flight sim experience isn't going to help a lot in KSP though some of the terminology will be familiar and when flying planes it will help a bit but for rockets about the only thing is you will know to rely on your instruments (especially the navball) rather than visual ques (a common beginner mistake). Are you in sandbox or career mode? If in sandbox give career a try, by limiting your choices it helps guide you to a more successful experience. If you are able to watch internet video you might try some of the many tutorial beginner videos (I can't so I'll leave it to others to recommend specific ones). Ask specific question (and post pictures) in the game play forum, you'll get lots of help. And search that forum there's lot's of good advice about how to do these things. Are you really remembering how long it first took you to master a flight simulator? Bet it took more than a few hours. Sounds like maybe you are being a bit heavy on the controls, but without details I'm just guessing. If your are still having trouble with the maneuver modes maybe you are trying to push yourself to far too soon. Make sure you can orbit Kerbin and return safely. Next do a Mun encounter (not orbit) and return first, once you can do that, then go for a Mun orbit and safe return. After that try this Mun landing tutorial (not a video). Also something I didn't now about those nodes for a long time, when the cursor is in the circle of one of the adjustment knobs (like prograde) you can use the mouse wheel to change it rather than dragging it for fine tuning it. F5 quicksave and especially alt/mod-F5 and alt/mod-F9 named quicksave/load are your friends, save often so you can go back and retry (and not lose too much in the event of a crash--some people seem to have better KSP stability than others, e.g. I've had 3 crashes in the last 200+ hours of use, not counting a corrupted upgrade but that wasn't KSP's fault ). -
How many instances of KSP do you run simultaneously?
kBob replied to kBob's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Well if you hit the esc key to pause the simulation it seems to use very little resources while paused or that's been my experience while monitoring what's going on in task manager. Also for my purposes I'm using the 32bit version of ksp for my second instance as it uses a little less memory though that's not really your problem (and might not work anyway if a lot of mods are being used). And I "officially" declare you to still be on-topic (I actually personally often find very useful information when people wander a bit from the main topic ). I'll keep my eye on that mod, would be very handy, thanks. -
It would make quick tests of amphibious planes easier too (that's my next project after I accidently discovered my tier 4 plane also works as a boat up to 20m/s, but it would have to taxi back to land to take off).

I had one mod that not only didn't work, but in the external view screen it caused some of the apps, like the contract viewer to disappear, some things were definitely changed in 1.1.3 that cause fits with some mods. I just used it as a reason to get rid of most of my mods and play mostly vanilla again (but then vanilla is my favorite flavor ). @DarkHawkGames: I looked around a bit and couldn't seem to find any legitimate copies of 1.1.2 other than a demo. Steam itself reverts to the last major release which in the case of KSP seems to be the second/middle number. It's an easy program to make backups of: in future you might want to copy the ksp folder to somewhere else periodically and set steam to not do automatic upgrades (though in my experience it will do them anyway if you use steam to launch them: with ksp you can easily just make a shortcut to ksp.exe or ksp_x64.exe, or the equivalent on mac/Linux, though steam won't accumulate statistics if you do that). In fact since ksp has no drm you can make a copy to somewhere else on your drive and run it from there, install your mods there etc. then when steam updates you can go check that update to see if it works with your mods with out affecting your primary copy.

How many instances of KSP do you run simultaneously?

Sorry just seemed like the way you expressed it you were ignoring what I was saying, happens on forums when you try to keep answers brief , thanks. Well I've been doing it for 24+ hours with 0 crashes , in fact the only crashes I've had were when I was running only single instances, but of course ymmv. -
How many instances of KSP do you run simultaneously?

ASUS Rampage V Extreme x99 motherboard, i7-5930k (not oced at present), 16GB ddr4, 980ti, SSD...and a good tower case with lots of nice big well oriented fans (no water cooling). I built it Jan 2015. There some bits in it quite a bit older like the hard drives . Now if my old Sandybridge motherboard hadn't physically cracked (probably the strain of a heavy graphics card) I'd still probably be using it (well it's still around it works with the onboard graphics). I like to build my systems to last awhile (I used to build and sell custom systems, so I only enjoy doing it now once in a few years). -
This has made me think. Instead of having my own, usually outdated, keyboard map, maybe I should write a program that would take the keyboard bindings out of the settings.cfg and create a custom keyboard map for display and/or printing. Have to look into that it would be very handy. But if the Escape key settings menu had access to the key bindings that would be a big help.

kerbalEVA holds crew but has no interior model defined!

A reason for having Kerbal doctors, personally I'll skip those internal exams. -
How many instances of KSP do you run simultaneously?
kBob replied to kBob's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Did you read my post? I explained why I found it useful, it's a lot quicker than switching back and forth between sandbox and career. I certainly have plenty of RAM unutilized on a 16GB system to run two plus some other stuff (like right now I'm at about 70% utilization). -
I run ksp_x64 with my main career, but recently I've been keeping an instance of ksp open so I can quickly switch to it to try something out without having to exit my career save and switch to sandbox...after all isn't that what large amounts of RAM are for? It looks like I could safely have at least one more open (especially if I didn't run IE too) though I can't really think of a reason why, unless I wanted to run two different careers simultaneously.

1.1.3.1289 is what shows on my startup screen, is that what you mean?
-
Probably it will go onto a backup disk soon, after a few problems (due to mods and a slightly corrupted update) 1.1.3 seems solid enough now so don't see any need to go back except maybe in 5 years from now for nostalgia purposes.

What music do you listen to while playing KSP?
kBob replied to Scenter102's topic in KSP1 Discussion
One other thought: the Maynard Ferguson rewrites of various space movie themes played on his trumpet. I especially like his Star Wars theme here. -
Can I delete KSP_data folder if I don't plat 32bit version?
kBob replied to omelaw's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Well try renaming them and see what happens. -
I don't believe in them, but maybe if I lived in the Kerbal universe I would. Now I'm wondering though if there is way to change the texture on the monoliths or is it hard coded?
-
I was so disappointed when I tried to ram my rover into it only to find it it's a hologram, though I do wonder why Kerbals go to the effort to project it.
-
Go down and look at the slang definition here it's a pretty mild insult though. I've also heard it applied to marines (as in the military) as a mild derogatory.

Landing struts for the XL rocket parts
kBob replied to Sereneti's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Yes and landing legs in general need some love. Maybe for 1.2 when they go to an updated Unity. I've gotten in the habit of not using them very much--in a way coming up with various alternatives is fun too, but they are convenient and look better. At least I can bump into them now (though I've become so paranoid about that I haven't actually tied it yet though it was amusing the first time or two). -
Sometimes. Usually though I do it either to take a break or to look something up I've forgotten in those cases I usually pause the game, but sometimes if it's like going to take 20 minutes to reach a node I'll use that as good time to do something else for a bit. I probably need to reinstall KAC though so I don't overshoot my goal or have to keep checking back.

Those Stupid Airborne Missions
kBob replied to Corona688's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Thanks to everyone in this thread you inspired me build my first working jet and go after some of those missions in my new career and at tier four. I did have one weird thing I could not for the life of me get a vertical stabilizer/rudder on properly for some reason it would cause the aerodynamic overlay to go off at an angle when the rudder was on straight, I finally resorted to a V (Bonanza type) rudder/stabilizer (taking the place of both vertical and horizontal stabilizers) and it worked fine. (And in a new version I didn't have the problem but the rudder was attached to a different part type not that long slanted tail connector A). The other thing though was it was a bit of a pain to trim out so I "cheated" and put in a reaction wheel and use the SAS to do my trim for me. I really do need to get my joystick out, trying to coordinate a turn on the keyboard is annoying (so used to having auto coordination in flight simulators ) but doable. Oh and I didn't even need flaps: stall speed was below 50m/s landed better than I thought just dropped onto a convenient field near the KSC which is better and smoother than that un-upgraded joke of a runway (had parachutes along just in case). -
Oddly enough I just experienced my first crash just after crashing my newest jet and returning to the space center while some of it was still moving. Anyway hope that's just a one off and I removed most of my mods (only kept two one that adds indicator lights to various parts and one that retextures the navball the two essential mods for me) and had to start my career over as the update plus a mod ruined my 1.1.2 career (in fact I had to delete both partdatabase.cfg and settings.cfg ) -- 1.1.2 was rock solid for me far far longer than this, but we shall see (and I wasn't flying jets in 1.1.2 I just started doing that with my new career).

If I was writing game software, I'd most likely chose Steam for distributing it, I'd say saving the hassle of trying to find my own servers etc. version control and individual sales would be worth the fee. But what I do like is I'd have a choice, I don't like the closed one site only things like Apple does and Microsoft would like to: that's too closed for my tastes, choice is good. When I first joined Steam years ago I was very suspicious it just seemed another type of DRM probably as bad as all those others that kept me from playing my legitimately purchased games, but fortunately I was wrong. There had been one bad downside to steam however, it has made the move to download only games much faster, for those of us in rural or just poorly served areas this is a problem, there is just no way I'm going to spend 40 hours downloading a 40GB game (and I only get those speeds between 1am and 7am), so I've had to pass up several recent games since the copies they sell in stores are just either stub DVD's with maybe a few gigs on them or just a steam code . For games the size of KSP it's not such a problem (in fact I can sometimes get 2GB/hr in off hours especially on low use days like Friday nights). On the other hand updates from steam (at least the ones I usually get) are most often Δv...oops I mean Δ change which does save quite a bit of time (it seemed like before that most often game publishers would just reissue the whole thing). OP: In addition to the continued activity of Squad also take a look at the huge amount work going on in the KSP modding community (and thanks to Squad for making adding mods to the program so easy) which I suspect will continue to thrive even if Squad/Squid disbands (gets turned into calamari?) after version 10 or 12 (we are on 1.1.3 now).

Finally made a flying machine, using tier 4 stock parts only, that actually flies. It needs some work, very hard to trim out so I just used SAS and a small control wheel instead. And it's horrible on the ground have to taxi into a field and hope for the best and that was after trying dozens of different wheel configuration. The actual landing gear in inside the storage compartment (yep parachutes):

Sadly this mod doesn't work in 1.1.3 (well NBAlwaysHideOnMap = False still does which is nice). Actually though I never could figure out how to work the color changer in 1.1.2 it would just flash the color bar and stay on the default color no matter what I did.
