Saw your thread, very good looking craft. I'm still refining my SSTO's design a bit and need to finish my antimatter collector craft...but will post some pics later this weekend. Will also post craft files, but you'll need the interstellar mod, Kethane and Kethane plus.

Flying (off of) Eve!
John Crichton replied to WhiteKnuckle's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Thanks for confirming. And yup, I could just set up a lab and produce fuel at the runway...but I kind of want an antimatter collector closer to EVE anyway, so shipping it at the same time as the SSTO. Using the Kethane plus mod to mine water for fuel...so that combo will allow me to have a pretty small "go anywhere" setup. -

So did I a few weeks ago...but I quickly abandoned that because my ship was a giant monster that wasn't fun to fly Will post my entry towards the end of this weekend... -
Flying (off of) Eve!
John Crichton replied to WhiteKnuckle's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Question: I build a small Antimatter SSTO using thermal jets. As you know, that means I need antimatter as fuel, which I can only really get in Kerbin orbit. So I have to launch the SSTO with a conventional rocket before I fill my antimatter tank in orbit using my antimatter collectors. Can I do this...take off using a conventional rocket and then land on Kerbin after packing the antimatter and then start the challenge from that point on? Technically it can't lift off Kerbin before loading up on antimatter in orbit first, and I don't want to cheat by manually editing some Antimatter into my tanks. Alternatively I could of course ship some antimatter down to the runway, but I don't really see the difference. Once refueled, I can make the entire Kerbin KSC > EVE > Kerbin KSC round trip in one go using only my SSTO. However, I will send my Antimatter collector craft behind it so I can set up a permanent antimatter refueling station around Jool (long overdue)...and because that way I can do every single sub-challenge in one go. Might even do a bonus trip to Tylo -
Brilliant, thank you very much for this! I just build an antimatter thermal jet SSTO using water as it's non-atmospheric fuel. This and the Kehtane mod allows me to go and land pretty much everywhere without having to send resupply fuel behind my SSTO. Just need to finish my antimatter harvester ship (don't need a ton, the SSTO is tiny) and I'll have one of the smallest "grand tour" ships ever

Thanks for the book suggestion, bought it on Audible yesterday. Loving it so far, especially the chapter that ends with him saying "all's good" followed by the next chapter starting with "omg I'm so ****ed". That's generally how my Jeb missions go in KSP

[1.3.1] Ferram Aerospace Research: v0.15.9.1 "Liepmann" 4/2/18
John Crichton replied to ferram4's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I'm new to FAR too, but afaik doing the standard "gravity turn" at 10k isn't the way to go. I think you need to turn more gradually (but I might be wrong, still testing stuff myself).- 14,073 replies

The best space related speech challenge
John Crichton replied to HafCoJoe's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Hahaha, I guess the saying "stupidity hurts" is true after all That dude clearly forgot that those old astronauts were daredevils, not exactly the same as astronauts today (not diminishing their accomplishments...just a different type of people). -

Thanks. Mhhh, that sounds pretty easy, but not really once you consider multi-year missions. I like to venture out far, so making it (much) more difficult would feel a bit like running with lead on my feet. Will give it a try this weekend.

Out of interest, what don't you like about TAC? I haven't tried it yet...

PS: Bolded the ones I'd try first if I were you. Interstellar is probably my favorite since it adds so much to the game, followed by Kethane because I hate having to send refueling ships after my exploratory crafts heading out far. PPS: If you install a lot of mods like me, you might need that texture reduction mod. I have a new top-specced Macbook Pro but KSP can't access all resources. So even using a relatively good computer like that, I had to install the texture reduction mod or else the game would freeze before fully loading.

So I decided to play some Spore on the space stage.
John Crichton replied to Dizzle's topic in The Lounge
I keep on doing similar things with other games...trying to add a "Kerbal influence". Wish I could play Project Zomboid as a Kerbal... -
Yup, Project Zomboid is brilliant. Graphics are obviously worse/different than Rust/DayZ and the other zombie games, but it's also more complex and imo give you a better feeling of a "real" zombie apocalypse. Now that they've added multiplayer it's even better.

Help needed: Kethane Miner
John Crichton replied to psyper's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
All true in THEORY...but once you take into consideration fuel used to rendevous with your refinery craft in orbit, it's not really worth it imo. The margin is too slim and imo not worth the hassle. This changes of course if you want to use 1 mining lander to refuel a whole orbital fleet with multiple other craft that don't have a Kethane mining ability. -
Help needed: Kethane Miner
John Crichton replied to psyper's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I just built my first Kethane SSTO...and here are a few tips: 1) It's more efficient to refine on the planet/moon instead of in orbit. 2) Your refinery decides how many miners you need because it's your bottleneck. 3) Less miners + smaller refinery = lighter craft (at the expense of taking longer to mine). 4) If you refine on the ground, you don't need large Kethane tanks...2-5 of the smallest ones are perfectly fine, even when using the large refinery. 5) Gigantor solar panels are the devil...way too heavy. Stick with multiple smaller ones or even better, a Kethane electricity generator to make it possible to mine in the dark. Here's my Kethane-Plasma SSTO...not the quickest refueler out there, but it can reach all the destinations you listed without a tugger and also land pretty much everywhere but Jool, Eve and maybe Tylo (haven't tested Tylo yet). -
Civilization 5...but only if you're single, your GF/wife would leave you once it sucks you in. Definitely check out "Project Zomboid" too. Don't let the graphics fool you, it's probably the best zombie game out there.

Just checking in to say thank you!! I like to test various mods and RAM was a serious bottleneck...despite my 16mb of 2133 RAM. Can't wait for KSP to fully support 64bit, but for now your fix does the trick. Running the Near Future and Interstellar mods alongside various others without a hitch now. Before I used to get various crashes and hang-ups.

SPACE STATIONS! Post your pictures here
John Crichton replied to tsunam1's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Launched the base of my space station today...including science and habitation modules. Fuel depot and generators to follow over the coming days. Just wanted a place to dock my SSTOs in orbit before they head out. The plan is to tug the station to Jool eventually. Plenty of docking ports to add stuff. First SSTO made it And my Kehtane plasma SSTO made it too. Need to ship up my fuel depot and drive unit now. 15 Kerbals floating up there so far...and Doodsted's enjoying the view.
