When you've got 10, 20, or more km/s in the tanks you don't tend to give two hoots about the Oberth effect Different trajectories is a fair concern in reality, but less so with stock KSP ions. That said, Kerbin-Duna isn't really in ion engine territory delta-V wise, unless the OP wants to do a lot of orbital manoeuvring at Duna for whatever reason. Kerbin>Moho>Gilly>Bop>Kerbin, that's the kind of mission profile ions shine at (just watch for the weak solar power out by Jool).

Compare the length of the burn to the period of the orbit you are in. If the burn is too long compared to the orbit you're going to have all sorts of problems. The solution is to first get into a higher parking orbit, either from the lifter or on the ions themselves. Also check you have good solar power. If you're heading to Duna your ejection burn would normally be on the night side of Kerbin, a problem for ions. A higher parking orbit will help, because you're in Kerbin's shadow for less time. Alternatively launch into a retrograde orbit, then you can make your ejection burn on the day side.

Unless someone else also named their mod folder PFSystems, that's the Boris pack, http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/70018-1-0-x-Kopernicus-The-Boris-System-%28new-planets%29-Updated-7-19-2015-creating-planets-on-Twitch

wanna replay KSP - addon suggestions?
cantab replied to SoWeMeetAgain's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Yet another vote for New Horizons, awesome mod. With a caveat - it's best if you're already decent at interplanetary transfers. -
Jeb's piloting skills are such that he's been dubbed a "machine". Therefore we are putting in a claim for theft, for which we are covered, and not as you contend for kidnapping for which I acknowledge we are not covered. The launch of the Sarnus V failed catastrophically due to red tape. Literally - the rocket was taped to the launchpad.

Nice! I made a craft inspired by the Ca 60 myself a while back, although a less faithful replica. Mine was a miner and fuel hauler and it's sitting out in some grasslands fully laden waiting for me to take on the challenge of getting it back into the sky.

It was Roverdude's fault for making the Kerbal Minecraft Program mod. All development work on KSP 1.1 is mysteriously lost, and Maxmaps has flown out of the country and is uncontactable.

We'll need an unlimited budget to research fusion torch drives and push Jool away! And let's not tell the insurers that it's just something that happens for half of every year because Kerbin orbits faster than Jool. Jeb wants to use the fusion torch drives for his heavy Minmus lander. Laythe has been contaminated with a virus.

An engineer asked Wernher, "For what is the Not-Rockomax Micronode?" Wernher told the engineer "For proceed." The engineer was enlightened.

Eve. Because anything that goes there is gonna have a hard time coming back it's the perfect place for a colony.
-
Ahem, false alarm. We sent our engineers the "spacecraft" design that was just a parachute by itself. During a retrograde launch a booster was dropped over the mountains and injured three skiers.

[1.3] [Kopernicus] New Horizons v2.0.1 [2JUN17] - It's Back!
cantab replied to KillAshley's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
So long as I know when the transfer window is, courtesy of Transfer Window Planner, I've been able to set up my interplanetary transfers fairly easily by fiddling with the manoeuvre node. The one aspect I still don't have quite down is the inclination, my Jool transfer orbit was rather inclined compared to Sonnah and Jool's orbits, but I did better for Titanus and Asclepius transfers. -
Awesome work with the OPM support. For future expansion have you thought about a way to support arbitrary systems? I believe KSPTOT used a plugin that could output a file describing all the bodies and orbits, there may be other ways.

It's Bruce Forsyth's Play Your Cards Right, and I'm saying LOWER! -37

Unless you want to go round the Sun several times you can't just do such a mission at any time, there will be limits. Since it just did flybys Voyager 1 wasn't using fuel-efficient Hohmann transfers, but "express" ones with a solar apoapsis way beyond the target planet. I'm not really sure how to work them out yourself.

No...just...no...I shan't...I won't...I can't...not again...no clicks...no It looks like I nuked my previous progress when I was having web browser problems. Once you get a good autoclicker it just ends up being idleRPG anyway.

Funnily enough I seem to have come round to the Poodle a bit on my launchers, it does seem to offer more performance than a Swivel, the boost to upper-stage delta-V from its Isp compensating for the reduction in lower-stage performance from its mass. Still not sure when I'll use it on an orbital spacecraft though. Maybe if I build something using 3.75m or Mk3 parts.

In our defence, KSC2 is indestructible. Orion Telescope and Binocular are suing Roverdude over trademarks.

Mechjeb: Crashing your ships so you don't have to! With a fairing wider than the stack and no stabilising fins at the bottom your rocket will be mildly unstable. That means you need to hold it close to prograde at all times. Inside the yellow circle should be fine. Mechjeb is yanking it over and then you get a classic aerodynamic flip. As for why it didn't happen before, two options. Mechjeb should have an option to "limit AoA", use it. KSP also has a known bug with its physics.cfg file being missing or corrupted, which causes incorrect aerodynamic behaviour. You could have built rockets in that behaviour only to find they don't work when things are right.

Obviously that design works well. Two T45s would offer even more thrust, but it might well be more than you need. That was the situation with my Serran lander - one T45 would have made the lander too tall, and two T45's would have been massive overkill, a pair of Thuds was still overkill but worked well. (Serran is a mod planet with atmosphere, between Duna and Laythe in size.)

What will you do differently in your next career?
cantab replied to eddiew's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Not play career. Not even play science. Next time I start a new save I'm just going Sandbox. Early game stuff by and large isn't a challenge to me. I should be stretching myself with complex missions, it's been a long time since I did something truly impressive and challenging. -
While it was undoubtedly foolish for John to do so, considering known Kerbal behaviour the action of removing a spacesuit's helmet in vacuum is considered "foreseeable misuse" and therefore something the suit manufacturers should have safeguarded against. An asteroid that was on course to safely miss Kerbin was redirected and hit the island runway.

There are two projects to revive Alternis Kerbol, but both are in early development. The New Horizons planet pack is a similar idea and much more mature. The antenna range feature in 1.1 is expected to be optional, so you can just turn it off.
