My suspicion too. As I mentioned elsewhere, in the office I've had a few old drives that "used to work fine" go kaput during a Windows re-install and I speculate that simple load is the cause, rather than Windows doing anything wrong. That said other causes aren't impossible.

[1.3] [Kopernicus] New Horizons v2.0.1 [2JUN17] - It's Back!
cantab replied to KillAshley's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
That is the consequence of It's fixable by checking what the new flightglobals assigned by Kopernicus are, from the Kopernicus log, then going through your save and putting the correct value under REF in the orbit section for each vessel. -
This is being silly. If I have an LED that emits red light but is black when not emitting light, I am still going to say it's red when it's lit.

The Claw as docking bay clamps?!
cantab replied to Arugela's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
When it comes to the original question, I don't recommend doing it with the claw. You can dock multiple docking ports at once for extra strength, though it's more challenging than a single one. For example you could have one port at the stern of the cargo bay and two ports on the bottom, and dock a ship to all three of those at once. -
I would say yes, but...Real Solar System and Realism Overhaul are two separate mods. They're often used together but you don't have to use RO to use RSS. RO adds a lot of complication and wants more part packs to get the best out of it. As alternatives SMURFF rebalances the stock parts to be closer to reality, while Cryogenic Engines adds some more efficient engines. Or you can play RSS with the stock parts, you'll just need really big rockets to get to places.

[1.3.1][Kopernicus] Uncharted Lands v0.5.4 [26Dec17]

Based on your previous pics, Dres? -
how to avoid cyan aerodynamic lines?
cantab replied to Gooru's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I would try a single tailfin further back. -
At the moment I'm maintaining a "mission log", which doubles as a reference for what ships were built for what. But there's nothing stopping you using a name like Duna Lander "Boing Boing"

[1.3] [Kopernicus] New Horizons v2.0.1 [2JUN17] - It's Back!
cantab replied to KillAshley's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
This mod is the gift that keeps on giving. Nolas is yet another great body and it gave me the perfect chance for a "trench run" landing, which I pulled off perfectly. -
A second Leouch landing, and then on to Nolas where I went trench running. I can safely say that New Horizons is my favourite mod in KSP.

I've had drive failures in Windows 7 installs. I don't believe it's anything to do with Windows as such, just that a new install involves a lot of writes which could push a drive at the end of its life "over the edge".

I'll see your Kerbin Noir and raise you a Pikasso:

THE single most aggravating thing in KSP for me is...
cantab replied to wossname's topic in KSP1 Discussion
The game's "fps" counter is indeed known to report framerates lower than x as x. Usually x is 25 fps though. Still, I'd check with an external framerate monitor such as fraps or voglperf. -
Game fails to run from /opt
cantab replied to StarStryder's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
In theory you could install KSP in /opt, then create a ksp folder in your home directory and symlink to all files and folders in /opt except the ones you need to write to. Then run it from the folder in /home. But it seems like unnecessary hassle. -

It's only because of KSP's performance problems that "art" and "functional" are in opposition. -

I don't. Not when I'm using ScanSAT -
I'm really surprised "plane" isn't in the list of words, go figure.

Water: Landings vs Splash
cantab replied to Karretch's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Old thread, but yes, I've found that also. Similarly a Kerbal standing on a floating ship may be counted as "Landed" rather than "Splashed Down". A few versions ago I encountered a bug where if I had a Kerbal walking on a boat, then switched to the boat itself, it too would be considered "Landed" while floating on the water. That bug is dangerous - if I left and returned to the craft it would drop beneath the sea then blow up. No idea if it still works. Kerbal Engineer can display Situation as well as Biome. I usually have both on my HUD. -
how much can actually be jammed into a service bay
cantab replied to 322997am's topic in KSP1 Discussion
IIRC I put about 18 of the smallest batteries in a 1.25m service bay, to run a probe before I unlocked solar panels. I also believe other people have put Kerbals in lawnchairs in the small bays. -
Yay complicated transfers. I started in a near-polar orbit of Ike, which in New Horizons is in an inclined orbit of Jool. I needed to get Vix, which is in an equatorial but highly eccentric of Jool. But I made it to Vix, which is from Kerbol Plus. Then another fiddly transfer to Leouch, the next regular moon out from Ike. This pic shows the inclination difference more clearly. And descended into the abyss. These cliffs are over 10 km high, and the air pressure at the bottom makes Eve's surface look like a vacuum.

[1.3] [Kopernicus] New Horizons v2.0.1 [2JUN17] - It's Back!
cantab replied to KillAshley's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Leouch is awesome. That's a word thrown about a lot these days, but this time I really mean it - descending into its abyss truly inspired awe. So far I've only been to four of New Horizons' original worlds, and two of those - Serran and Leouch - have been truly special places. I've probably said it before, but I cannot rate this mod highly enough. Hopefully I'll make Nolas, it's going to be a close thing delta-V wise. -

cantab replied to wossname's topic in KSP1 Discussion
The festering pile of dung that Squad call a thermal system. The other day I finally found it can be turned off in the debug menu under Physics, I so could have done with learning that months ago. 90% of my opinion on 1.0.5 will depend on whether or not Squad fix it. A close second, the abysmal, slow-as-molasses performance in 1.0.x compared to 0.90. The remaining 10% of my opinion on 1.0.5 will depend on if that improves. Everything else is either my own fault (eg not fixing silly staging defaults) or can be avoided (eg career being naff, I just play science mode now). -
Game fails to run from /opt
cantab replied to StarStryder's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
More simply, if you're fine with everyone who uses the computer being able to play KSP, just change the permissions for other. On a sidenote, I believe the games group was originally intended for securing high-score files. By making the game programs setgid games, and the users not a member of that group, the programs could update the high scores but the users could not mess with them. Not too relevant nowadays with PCs, but back in the days of shared mainframes it was. -
[1.3.1] Ferram Aerospace Research: v0.15.9.1 "Liepmann" 4/2/18
cantab replied to ferram4's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
It seems like there's no great way to handle wing shape in FAR then, if clipping is bad and procedural wings have proven buggy.- 14,073 replies

Well why not start? Just a simple regular plane, fly it round the space centre, maybe take it out to the island, nothing fancy.
