  1. The first Atlas V ever launched was a 411
  2. I gotta admit that rocket does look awkward lifting off.
  3. Same here. I am really glad they kept that scene in. Apparently Ridley Scott didn't think people would like or get the significance of Sean Bean being present at another council of Elrond. So he wanted to change the scene entirely. A whole bunch of producers pleaded with him to keep it.
  4. Great video and some great close up shots of the rover in action. Hope it helps. Either way its still a cool video.
  5. Really great behind the scenes video.
  6. One thing you need to fix is the trench smoke. Otherwise this is a fantastic modpack and I see quite a bit of potential. This thread will also be keenly fixed within my gaze!
  7. I see ALOT of potential. I will be keeping my eye attentively gazed on this thread.
  8. The way it was written in the book it was setup as a design flaw
  9. In the book it was a design flaw. Weir does a flashback to the construction of the Hab from when it was first built.
  10. So it failed on the habitation side. Which goes against what your lead to believe in the book.I think any failue cant be contributed to stress, overuse, improper use, etc. I mean he was opening and closing the airlock a lot more than it might have been rated to be opened and closed. I honestly dont know. There are a bevy of things that could have caused his potatoes to not grow or to fail. I think have the hab decompress in a way that might seem believable and "sciencey" to the general public could have been Andy Weirs and Drew Goddards intention. You cant be OCD about a science fiction movie. I get it believe me. Once you I get on something I need to figure it out, but at some point you just need to let it go and enjoy it for what it is, a really good science fiction movie.
  11. Ok so the airlock would need to be attached to the hab. Its probably isn't on piece. It would have to be the seam where the airlock attaches to the habs. A seam like that would be under constant stress. Or at least far more stress than the rest of the hab.
  12. Isn't it that all the escaping pressure from the Hab that launches the airlock. I understand the why you might have a problem with it but regardless of how the airlock flipped or if it flipped the point was to have the airlock fail. Which caused a breach in the Hab. Which in turn caused the potatoes to fail which adds drama. Also it needed to be easily repaired. So I think you are right to question the validity of the failure but I also think you are just gonna have to accept it as narrative driven drama with a splash of some questionable science.
  13. Can we talk about the soundtrack?! I absolutely loved the soundtrack. The clever use of disco music and somewhat inspiring 70's music throughout the film was incredible! I mean Starman during the resupply montage.......genius!!!
  14. Interesting however Andy Weir wrote a program to make sure that all the orbits were correct and that all of the maneuvers were possible and realistic. I mean he was so particular about the orbits that he needed to figure out when the orbits made sense because he had them on Mars around thanksgiving. So he wanted to make sure that all of the orbit lined up from the beginning of the novel through all of the planned resupplies that were projected as well. I think the orbital mechanics are one of the most accurate things about the book and the movie because Andy Weir went through painstaking efforts to ensure the accuracy and realism of all that. He even said that in an interview (I cant remember which one) that if he was anyone in the book he would probably be Rich Purnell.
  15. I think you're just gonna have to take solace in the fact that you know what was supposed to be represented. Obviously they didn't quite do that part justice. It's easier to represent a rupture that's to represent a failure of the fabric of the jab. Now that might seem like a marginal difference and can be represented just the same but again they needed to show it how might be easily interpreted by the average person or non book reader. To them it was an explosive decompression which caused the airlock to explode off.
  16. Saw the movie this morning! It was fantastic! I can't say what I love more the book or the movie. And I can't make that determination the boom isn't better than the movie and the movie isn't better than the book. They are both fantastic in their own right. In that case I guess I was able to separate them and appreciate them both for what they are. They are both love stories to science. I think that both the book and the movie hit the threshold of sacrifice of science for narrative. Let's be honest we can nit pick every scene but the bottom line is that it is a movie and the purpose is to escape reality. I think I can easily say this was the most accurate science fiction movie ever made. Any more accuracy and you start going toward being boring and only appealing to really nerdy people like all of us. The solutions to the problems were science based. There was very little luck involved. There was no "power of love" moment. It was all lets just work our asses off to get mark watney home. So if you read the book don't expect the movie to be exactly like the book. There is a lot from the book in the movie. More than I have ever seen in a novel to film adaptation. But book readers you just have to go in and expect a thouroughly entertaining movie and satisfying on nearly every level. If you expect it to be exactly like the book you are going to have a bad time. For me they are both fantastic on their own. I am 1000% ok with that. When it comes to not picking science and engineering. Yea you all have great points but come one this movie was the closest to we are going to get to a really accurate Sci fi movie. Go see it I give it 5 kerbal heads out of 5. :D :D
  17. Have you guys seen this? Check the last page. I mean......WOW http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/134343-Saturn-V-%28Reincarnation%29-Apollo_Block-III_Testing_DOWNLOAD
  18. WOW! I mean there are no other words. Its just wow. I want to download but I think my computer will catch fire. Congrats especially since that is just a first pass. You get all the rep. I also love that there are multiple ETS mods now. In a week we have gone from no ETS mods to two.
  19. You know my excitment for KSP was really starting to wane. I went from playing it everyday to only a few times a week and even then it was just an impulsive habit. I am super excited about KSP now. With all of the new modders and new mods and the old modders with new mods, the influx of martian mods now, and ksp 1.1 coming soon KSP feels new again. I want to post this on all the new mods I have seen today alone but I would probably get in trouble.
  20. First of all this is a Ridley Scott movie. He has an undeniable style and although this is a Sci fi movie set in the real world Ridley will be Ridley. So the style is future NASA but it's Sykes by Ridley Scott. When it comes to the Hermes they did take quite a few liberties but with the exception of the book saying "the Hermes was an enormous ship" Andy Weir didn't exactly go in to detail that much. The engines could still be nuclear but the ship and the habitation areas are as large as the ISS so they would need solar panels that big including that much power to maintain a nuclear reactor. Look at the movies they made for the constellation missions those solar panels are huge.
  21. 9am showing on sunday morning or even on a saturday morning. No one in the theater. Or if you can go to the movies during the week theaters are empty. Don't deprive yourself of seeing a movie beautifully on a big screen because of that. I am not diminishing your thing about large crowds. I am simply saying there are ways of getting around that.
  22. please delete the poll from this thread http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/116406-The-Martian-by-Andy-Weir just the poll I want to post another poll.
  23. I am gonna go out on a limb and say that Ridley Scott certainly knows about those rockets. It comes down to budget. Editing and creating CG near future rockets would have cost an incessant amount of money and could have possible diverted money away from other parts of the movie worthy of proper attention. Now to us who are huge rocket and launch vehicle fans we are gonna notice that IMMEDIATELY. However the launch vehicle doesn't matter, the payload is what matters. So it is unfortunate that they missed an opportunity to create near future launchers but now you guys have an opportunity to do it.
  24. I love these forums!! Every thread in some way is talking about the Martian. Here are Three mods ALREADY being dedicated to Martian parts. And atleast two reinactment thread and YouTube shows in the works. Let's be honest though The Martain is not only one of the most realistic book/movies but it's the most kerbal. Keep it coming what did you guys think of the movie?
