  1. On checking Wikipedia, I have found that they pretty much are Ullage motors... just people use them to push spent parts away from their rocket, instead of using them as an in-between quick burst of speed (to maintain Apoapsis or similar while still in-atmosphere)... What I thought at first I'm not going to repeat, as I was totally wrong, and is a reminder that I should always check facts! EDIT: I thought they did... unless it's either MechJeb or KAC doing it for me... Doesn't always seem to work though...
  2. From memory, I was getting 0.31 TWR before I started on the transfer burn... which used up most of the fuel in the main body, which allowed me to jettison the drop tanks once the burn was complete, so now there are 12 random fuel tanks orbiting the sun between Kerbin and Jool! Been having lots of 'fun' trying to design a nice efficient fuel tanker since last update, as the mothership is once again nearly dry after Laythe intercept and circularization, and have been trying out 8MMW's and SSSPutnik's suggestions... From experimentation, I have learnt that the most efficient engines are the skippers - I tried with the KR-2L's, and then with Mainsails, but both proved FAR too powerful for the Docking Port Snr.'s, even when limiting the throttle (both vanilla - style and with MechJeb) which had the effect of longer burn times for less maneuverability... So back to the drawingboard I went, just putting the last of my 'Mega Tankers' into place and then sending it off to meet the Jool SaR (Science and Research) Mothership... Will be making a new post to chronicle these adventures, as it will again be pic-heavy and fairly lengthy...
  3. probably get the right advice if in the right place - this will probably get moved to the gameplay sub-board when a mod gets round to it...
  4. Damn, I missed you the last couple of days... even ended up registering on Reddit I missed you so! right, time to do all those update things I meant to do before you went down for your upgrade
  5. 2 day downtime for a big forum update...
  6. can we exploit it to our advantage though? to the research mobile!!!
  7. First time I've seen the mods' have a load of fun with a thread as well as the people posting in it 3rd renaming of the thread I've seen so far... and it gets better every time lol And I think this includes some placeholder/sample contracts too, as the testers said that the barebones looked good, but didn't really add anything play-wise... happy to be corrected as usual
  8. quick update; after struggling for over a week RT trying to get a decent refuelling mission/ship working, I *think* I might have cracked it... unfortunately had to drop the SSSputnik SSTO Fuel Truck plan for now, but will probably come back to that design at a later date, probably when I do my 'other' Jool 5 mission (want to see how much difference KAS will make on my wobbly wobbly vessels!) Update... soon....
  9. Who ever said the Dev's don't listen to the komminity?! haha, this would be epic (goes ALL THE WAY TO 11!!! heh... and now to play the Spinal Tap Soundtrack...)
  10. Originally named JATO (Jet Assisted Take Off) due to the military not trusted ANYTHING with the word 'Rocket' attached, it was invented by a guy called John Whiteside Parsons - possibly the most prominent of the forgotten forefathers of modern rocketry, he and his team were the ones to help set up the GALCIT Rocket Reaearch Group, and the JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) which helped Theodore Von Karman (as Parsons' superior) set up a whole load of other organisations and to teach rocketry as a scinece at CalTech (California Technology College). Source: "Strange Angel; the Story of John Whitside Parsons" - by George Pendle. Possibly the most awesome book I have ever found in a £1 shop!!! [stupid mobile 'net... snip!]
  11. Ah... there goes my idea of using KAS to get the behemoth fuel tanker to hold together until rendezvous with my mothership in orbit around Laythe... So now I've gone and installed it, I will not use it to complete the mission - please disqualify me if you notice any docked vessels being magically strutted together! (or at least demote me to the free-style group...)
  12. Just found Iron Maiden - The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg, is fitting the bill at the moment!
  13. Think this belongs in the Science Labs really... and a link would be handy if you could add one later
  14. Turned out (very late last night!) that the pull design isn't great using 2 x KR-2L's... the tug overcame the magnetic pull of the docking ports and flew off on its own until I hurriedly switched to it and found out how far it had blasted itself >.< Just sending up a new one now, to dock to the bottom of my stack of 6 S3-14400 tanks... I think that will be enough fuel for the rest of the mission!!!
  15. Sorry for my lack of updates, been going through some personal stuff as well as building my fuel freighter... Have used a design suggested by SSSPutnik, so the complete tanker will be named in his honour - cheers for the idea, dude! Pics to follow, maybe some time this evening...
  16. Make sure to copy your vessels one at a time and TEST before copying the next to make sure it isn't the save-breaker!
  17. This here Kerbal.edu should be useful, it also has a link to get the original game a bit cheaper... Enjoy (and sorry if this has been mentioned before!)
  18. This is known as 'Lithobraking' - and has been a challenge before, which wasn't too popular... Try out a few of the existing challenges to get a hang of the types of rules and different types of challenges - and always remember to use the search to see if someone has already posted similar
  19. Nice work so far, like the RP elements of your storytelling Mine is boring in comparison! ;P
  20. and "Also did some tweaks on mission control" - yay! all buildings will then be in use... can't wait to see the internals, wonder if it will be like in the videos?
  21. I'm surprised Whackjob hasn't piped up yet... this is the sort of thing that made him famous in previous releases... He might even be able to get that sort of thing into orbit!
  22. yeah, this should be in the non-KSP part of the forum... sure it will get moved soon enough may well have a go later though...
  23. It is to do with the contracts system, they found that having just the contracts with no reward or structure (so just the 'bare-bones' of it) didn't work too well in testing, (wasn't really anything there, wasn't fun) so they are adding things to it before it's released, like the budgets, currency, and probably some place-holder missions... (hope I got that right!) Spot on, yep! There are also lots and lots of successful ships posted all over the place, and no-one minds if you check a few out to see how the working ones are arranged, to give yourself a few good ideas on ship design... If you need any help, please feel free to check out my Career Mode starter ships - link in signature [/shameless self-plug][/off-topic]
  24. I usually manage it by slowing to points of a meter a second... 0.2-0.5... This is the flag you have chosen for your save game! you can change it (or even turn it off entirely) by right-clicking the part with the flag on.
  25. I thought I had replied... but it might have been removed as I listed a load of non-KSP game soundtracks! Besides the game soundtracks, I'm really liking playing with Muse, Daft Punk and lots of other interesting things (but if this is not the same thread I posted in before, maybe it should be merged?)
