I've played on computers with similar specs and it has worked unless loading up crafts with > 100 parts. Have you tested by turning all gfx option down and selected full screen at the displays natural resolution? Even played on a laptop with 2x2.8GHz Core2, but using the AMD RV620 gfx card. But the Ivy_bridge internal should be enough I would think.

It's my experience that full screen and a border less window of exactly the same size is handled very differently by both drivers and window managers. So depending on both (mostly drivers I think) you can get very different performance.

20 min loading time for stock isn't normal for any form of disk (except for floppies). Do you have any form of VPN or unused network interfaces? (like firewire) That's been known to slow down loading to a crawl.

One additional Q, what's the model of laptop? Because it sounds like you've got one with dual GPU's and it's for some reason fallen back to the standard Intel GM one (my laptop will not even match 5 fps it's default, but runs decently on it's AMD RV620 discreet)
