  1. i still use 3dsmax for cad work. solid meshing tools is all you need, for anything. finite element analysis is for wussies.
  2. as far as surface scans are concerned. you would have to get down there with a drill rig to know for sure. spectroscopy and surface samples can only go so far. its like you got a piece of aluminum foil on a bowl of bean dip, and then assume that the whole thing is made out of aluminum and contains no bean dip. its your loss because i make one hell of a bean dip.
  3. i don't think ive ever been disappointed by a jurassic park movie. depends on which bond, i find modern bond movies to be somewhat lacking. but the sean connery era, hells yea.
  4. somewhere on an alien planet, large piles of accumulating socks are causing an environmental crisis for the locals.
  5. i tend to view our inability to colonize planets as an engineering problem. every ball of dirt in the solar system no doubt has stuff you can use. you might have to bring in some stuff from elsewhere. anything with a weak gravity well is fair game. enough to live on. but low enough to make the cost of launching spacecraft extremely cheap. stronger wells for post infrastructure. hellpits like venus for extreme desperation.
  6. other, definitely other. alien franchise. terminator franchise. any movies about the vietnam war. mad max the godfather dirty harry death wish even numbered star trek movies up to and including first contact george romero zombie films coffin joe movies 2001/2010 and of course the planet of the apes (not the remakes).
  7. the a-10 usually wins because BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT. while i think the facebook quacks and snake oil salesmen are worse than the virus, my opinions of health care proper are not much better.
  8. you could use those to heat an entire house with one of those. i decommissioned mine a few years ago, i needed some heat pipes for a project, and the mobo was just plastered with them. and it was behind a 3rd gen i5, and 3rd 4th and 8th gen i7s. also i ordered an 5800x, though im still mad at elon for tanking the price of bitcoin, its gonna be awhile before i get a mobo for this thing. been awhile since i used team red, back in the athlon 64 days.
  9. really depends on if the ship is a one off or if there is a fleet of them and how many space ports there are in the solar system with a nuclear reprocessor. even a spent fuel rod is valuable, especially in space. its something you can reprocess and are therefore a commodity you can trade for things like remass or air or whatever currency you may be using.
  10. lego is quickly becoming minecraft for boomers. i used to play with the space sets until about the mid 90s when i got into technic. i keep them around in case i want to prototype a robot or some other kind of machine.
  11. i got my ncase m1 and i have to say this thing is just beautiful. its almost a mortal sin to install computer bits into it. so far my plan was get the 5800x with my remaining funds and the mobo with bitcoin. unfortunately thanks to a certain rocket man who will not be named, the value of btc has been dropping steadily over the past several days. so barring another spike or a few more weeks of mining, i cant buy the mobo just yet. im also thinking about going with the 11700k instead. seems to have better benchmarks than the 5800x and is a bit cheaper. unfortunately the same cannot be said for the mobos for 11th gen (unless you want an asrock), and so im looking at needing another hundred bucks if i go that route.
  12. i thought this thread was about vacuum cleaners. carry on.
  13. i for one do not like simplified interfaces. like the one that my mom's orthopedist, has what is essentially the same old online form that you may have filled out a million times before. the only fundamental difference is you cant tab through the fields, and the fields don't even have a box around them, so you cant make them out from the background. i wish phone ui designers would stop screwing it up for the rest of us. speaking of my current health care rant. after our fourth trip to anchorage to visit my mom's orthopedist. the first to install a radial head screw, the second to install an external fixator and do tendon reconstruction. plus two more trips to take an x-ray and ask a couple questions. presumably because they have a special x-ray machine that our local clinic supposedly doesn't have. the ratchet did come out on the second of those, and the fixator crossbar was removed (its the jointed type, this frees the elbow for pt while still providing extra support). well after we got back mom started complaining that the joint was very loose. she called the orthopedist, and they sent us down to our clinic for an x-ray. turns out they have the exact same machine a 10 minute walk from our house. they could have zoomed this whole thing in. your tax dollars at work. all this travel is starting to get to me. its not helping my anxiety any. dont much like the fast pace of city living, or the nightmare of air travel, constantly needing to breathe lint. im starting to have chest pains. but after seeing our health care system in action, i don't want those people touching me. im going to have some whisky and maybe put some leaches on my fore arm, perhaps something from the dispensary. im starting to question if humans have any business living past 40.
  14. im a big fan of h.r. giger. none other than the creator of one of the best scifi aliens ever done, the xenomorph. i love the biomechanical style. probibly not safe for the forum though. its full of genitals. its sort of like where's waldo for adults.
  15. carry over from the freespace community. which was a carry over from an even older and longer (now truncated) screen name i used to use in the doom/descent/quake days. these days i tend to go by lord nothing, but only on accounts newer than the ksp forum (like mwo). using something as simple as nuke nowadays is rather troublesome because someone always grabs nuke pretty quick.
  16. would be digested fine by the ring of ramjets that they use to vent the extra hydrogen. i dont really have time to do that right now. got another anchorage trip here in a couple hours. but il look that up first thing when i get back. unless i forget, i will probibly forget.
  17. more of this. wonder if the spiral arrangement of the tubes has something to do with it, maybe create a vortex to spin out the water/ice crystals. some kind of antifreeze injection system?
  18. i think a more practical application of the engine is to launch a sub orbital space plane as kind of a first stage for a second stage disposable rocket. you can seriously upgrade the payload capacity if you dont have to take the whole plane to orbital velocity. essentially its another carrier aircraft, but one capable of getting out of the atmosphere and with more velocity than something like stratolaunch. you still get most the benefits skylon would give you, and some of the advantages of a 2 stage rocket.
  19. thats how the heat exchangers worked. back in the hotol days they did some tests and their heat exchangers would freeze up pretty fast due to water vapor in the atmosphere. apparently they have solved this problem, but are hush hush about it, which is the reason i created this thread.
  20. i stopped playing zork like games in the 90s.
  21. i think they plan on marketing the heat exchangers for other applications. lots of things require high performance heat exchangers. so any industrial process that needs to remove a lot of heat from a working fluid in a very short period of time is going to benefit from the technology.
  22. we have all seen the sabre engine in various articles and videos on skylon. and reaction engines tells you how almost everything works, almost. their secret sauce is most definitely their anti-icing system. and we know it works because they have conducted pre-cooler tests. so what do the smarter people of the forum think? how would you keep a giant precooler from freezing up?
  23. if you get enough snow, just open a window and shovel out a fridge size hole out of the roof high snow pack. put your beer in there.
  24. being an alaskan kind of helps. i need heat 10 months out of the year anyway. i was actually rather surprised how little power it needed. you actually clocks the card down for the best hash rate to power usage ratio which turns out to not run the card at full tilt. at least for the 2070 super it uses less power than gaming. the old 1060 gives me a little more than half its hash rate for roughly the same power so its better to use newer hardware whenever possible. old hardware which used to rot in my closet can at least serve a purpose and earn me a couple bucks a day rather than becoming e-waste. i certainly dont intend to scale up to an industrial level operation with a million dollar power bill, but enough to live on would be nice.
