Disable staging for fairings
Alshain replied to NeoFatalis's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
@panzer1b That is my feeling as well. The staging patch I have for disabling launch clamps for example. I have no clue why you would want that, but I imagine someone out there is probably going find a reason. Squad shouldn't make the assumption nobody will want it, especially since it is an option and would have no development time associated. -
Will it? It's not really worth it in remote tech. You can certainly do it, but Sun occlusion happens so rarely, it's especially unlikely when you need communications the most (insertion burn). Other maneuvers can simply wait till it comes back, that is the only critical one, and in most cases the position of the planet at the time of arrival will not be occluded by the sun, at least not on typical encounter trajectories. Furthermore I've found it incredibly difficult to get satellites to stay in the same orbital period as an on-rails object for some reason. Even when it seems perfect, it isn't. I once tried to put a satellite before and after the Mun, and no matter how close I got it's orbital period, the Mun would overtake it rather quickly.

It's worth noting most of them that matter, do have the same dimensions. But there are a few that do not and you have to go through and remove them manually. The one that irritated me most was the Communotron 88-88, which goes from an origami folding antenna to a ISS-style antenna that is a lot like one of the ones coming in 1.2. I loaded one of my stock craft and it was sticking out of the fairing, and that just drove me nuts.
-
I love the feel of the Ven's, but if you are altering stock parts, they should have the same dimensions, and not all of his do. So craft you build with it, will not necessarily be similar if you remove it. For me that is a deal breaker.

Kerbals have the ability to compress their bodies to fit in very tiny locations... like mice... and they just squish themselves up and go through the hollow struts. They just can't perform this stunt while people are watching, they are kinda shy about it.

Disable staging for fairings
Alshain replied to NeoFatalis's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
@Red Iron Crown That is kind of strange. It's almost like they only have partial colliders. Anyway, that's actually more of a reason to have the deploy limiter, to let you prevent problems like that. -
Rocket Part Revamp Discussion Thread
Alshain replied to Whirligig Girl's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Guys, he has this strange definition of 'graphics' stuck in his head and he is completely attached to it, even though it is incorrect. He keeps saying you are discussing graphics but the only graphics that have been discussed in the entire thread is PBR, which was dismissed as being a global option for all parts and assets. While you guys are discussing aesthetics, in his mind that is graphics. It's like you aren't speaking the same language here. It may not be true but that is what he thinks and you aren't going to convince him otherwise. -
Rocket Part Revamp Discussion Thread
Alshain replied to Whirligig Girl's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
@taterThe NASA Shuttle was a space plane. So is the DreamChaser, which is still in development despite losing the NASA grant. Perhaps you meant SSTO? But plane parts can be used to make shuttles, not just SSTO, so how are they magic? I agree the plane parts are the only real aesthetic in the game, and the rocket parts are a conglomeration of random aesthetic points that don't fit together. If KSP has an aesthetic, it's the plane parts, not the rocket parts. -
New Features I would like to see.

You know there are mods that do this already. They look terrible, but they do exist. Fictitious city lights that suddenly disappear as you get close to them can be found in EVE. -
Disable staging for fairings
Alshain replied to NeoFatalis's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Ah, well I don't recall that, but it hasn't had a collider since they implemented the deploy limiter on cargo bays because it was the first thing I did when I downloaded the update. It did take a bit of experimentation to get the limiter to work correctly (the reverse clamp direction was a bit confusing), but now I have it done and they could just copy the settings I have in my MM patch. -
Disable staging for fairings
Alshain replied to NeoFatalis's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
There is no collider on the service bay doors. If you don't have the deploy limiter it simply clips into the craft. It still works, it just looks awful. The deploy limiter just allows you to prevent that. Anyway, the deploy limiter is a bit off topic, but it's just another example of something they developed and unnecessarily restricted when it could be much more useful with a simple config change, just like staging. -
Disable staging for fairings
Alshain replied to NeoFatalis's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I have a very similar experience for the service bay door deploy limiter. They showed it in Squadcast on the cargo bays, I made a thread here suggesting it be added to the service bays. The developer that did it said I could just mod it. It's just sad because there is no inherent difficulty change in it, and the feature is already developed. Why not give the users the choice? -
Rocket Part Revamp Discussion Thread
Alshain replied to Whirligig Girl's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I doubt they would turn a 0.625m part into a 1.25m part. I suspect it was an attempt at adding more options for an upper stage, which your only real choice is the 909 in that size, and that can be overpowered and expensive on some payloads. -
Disable staging for fairings
Alshain replied to NeoFatalis's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
No it is not an oversight. Back when Squad added it, I requested it be added to fairings before release. The response I got from the Squad employee that developed the feature was that I could just mod it. They intentionally chose not to allow you to disable staging on fairings despite the fact that it would literally have no consequences. -
Disable staging for fairings
Alshain replied to NeoFatalis's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I agree, I think you should be able to disable staging on anything you want and it should be that way in stock. However, in the meantime stock does already have the ability it just isn't turned on. You can find a mod here to make it work if you are on the PC version. -

Transfer window visualization
Alshain replied to robogoofers's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
@Diche Bach There is a small range, Duna could have a good transfer between 35-45, maybe even 50 degrees. However, in the grand scheme of things it won't make much of a difference, you can see the total Delta V in the images below. It does not require the same orbital period, just an angle in relation to a fixed point... the sun. As for gravity assists, they can be done, it's painful with the stock tools we have though. Remember, you don't just need the gravity assist... you have to find an encounter afterward. -
Squadcast September 8th: 1.2 Experimentals Unveiled!
Alshain replied to AlphaMensae's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Good change on the on the Ground Stations! Not sure if 3 is enough, but we can try it in pre-release test and give feedback then. (unless the intent was to require a Kerbin relay network, but that would seem to be an extreme change of direction). In the end though, I think they may need one on each pole and then 3 + KSC around the equator. I see an Auto-Hide NavBall on map in the settings! 1 less mod I need to have.- 51 replies

Transfer window visualization
Alshain replied to robogoofers's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
That is a neat idea but it wouldn't move, it wouldn't need to move. The position of the proper phase angle will be the same for the entire orbit of the fastest moving planet. It would be very similar to how the closest approach markers work now, only instead of the position of your craft and the target craft, you are marking the position of the parent body and the target body when the phase angle is correct. I wonder if someone could make this into a mod? Just to see how well it would work. I'm not skilled enough with the API myself. I know KAC/TWP has a way to visualize it's results phase angles, it could be similar to that but instead, just the optimal angle. The porkchop graph without DeltaV would be unnecessary. -

Rocket Part Revamp Discussion Thread
Alshain replied to Whirligig Girl's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I disagree there. It's not like the word "release" has ever meant anything to Squad in the past. I think if it's an ugly aesthetic it should be replaced, regardless of the game being "released". Is it really that different? There is nothing in the plane parts to compare with rocket engines and asside from the yellow which I mentioned my dislike for earlier, the Boat tails match the planes quite nicely. -

Rocket Part Revamp Discussion Thread
Alshain replied to Whirligig Girl's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
@Andem Yes, and the revamp would replace that aesthetic over time. As I said, a few parts each patch. The plane and rocket part aesthetic doesn't match now. Ideally by the end of the revamp it will. I'm not really sure what your video is for, we haven't been talking about graphics at all.
