Custom Default Tweakables

It's not just resources. The idea is to have it default for most tweakables where it would make sense. You could change the default setting for the Flag just as easy as the monopropellant. When I say I want to be able to see the default state at a glance, I meant the custom default state, not the part default. So I can go back and see what I had set it to without creating a new part. -

@CobraA1 No offense meant, but that is a terrible justification. If parachutes being manually deployed would chase away new players we wouldn't be talking here right now. It's funny how KSP hasn't had any trouble with getting new players in the past, if parachutes are such a big issue.- 1,592 replies

It would work, but it is less elegant IMO. You wouldn't be able to see at a quick glance what they are set to already. You would instead have to create a new part to find out. It wouldn't be an entirely new window duplicating the existing one with my mock up, it would be literally the same window. I can see from your signature you are a mod developer so I would expect that you know the principles of Object Oriented Programming. -

The big problem with that is it would mean designing a new screen. The advantage to my mock up is it would simply re-use the existing tweakable menu. From a coding perspective that is significantly easier. Inevitably that can, and will have to be left up to Squad to decide. -

That would certainly work too, I just felt as though it would be harder for them to add the dynamic number of tweakables to that list. Maybe if they expanded it out to the right and made a 4th column. -

(Credit to @Temeter, we came up with the idea at the same time) I would like to see a method of setting tweakables to a default value based on my own preferences. This would work by right clicking a part in the editor gui and being presented with the same tweakable menu you would get if right clicking a part placed in the editor. You would then change the values to your own personal preferences and the game would save that option, outside of the craft and persistence files so that it would maintain across all games. Whenever you grab a new part from the GUI and add it to the craft, it would use these settings instead of the normal default values. They per-part tweakables can then still be altered in the normal way. The normal right click functionality in the gui should be moved, this is to remain consistent. Tweakables menus already appear with right click, so we want it to remain right click in all instances. Maybe move it to the middle mouse button? For example, if I wanted my Mk1 command pod to never have monopropellant by default, It would look something like the mock up below. Any future Mk1 Command Pods I pulled out of the GUI would have no monopropellant, unless I add it back.

That's exactly what I was saying. I'm working on a mock-up right now, I'm gonna put this in the suggestion forum since 1.2 is in feature lock and it's doubtful to happen that quick. Saving would be done outside the craft file and persistence file, it should remember your preference no matter where in the game you are. Great minds think alike.- 1,592 replies

Well, it would be nice if we could choose our preference without a module manager patch. I just don't know if that is possible on a tweakable. The issue is not that it's there, it's that on any sufficiently large craft, changing it on every single parachute is annoying. Even on small craft, remembering to change it every single time you build a craft is annoying. This is probably the biggest pitfall to using tweakables. Well to me it adds tedium of going in and turning it off on every parachute. @Arsonide Honestly though, a serious suggestion (maybe I should put this in the suggestion forums) would be to have a way to right click on a part in the VAB GUI and set a global default for all it's tweakables. Then every time you grab a new one of that part, it would take those settings and apply them.- 1,592 replies

It takes away gameplay. If I wanted the game to play the game for me, I would go play Orbiter. I want the possibility that I will screw up and deploy the parachutes at the wrong time, a game with no challenge isn't much of a game.- 1,592 replies

I'm not grumpy about it, but a change like that means I won't be able to do any pre-release playing before module manager is compatible. I don't want to have to go through and click every parachute on my craft. That would be insane. It's just that a change like this takes the challenge out of the game. They seem to be growing closer and closer to stock MechJeb.- 1,592 replies

We actually tried that before, in the end the Squad staff said they would prefer you give the money to a reputable charity (many forum members recommended Child's Play because of it's gaming nature however Squad does not endorse any particular charity that I am aware of). *sigh* guess I'll have to mod it back. The NX-01 was not flat, it's nacelles were higher than the saucer. Outside of speculation of lore, the designers for Star Trek: Enterprise took inspiration from the original Enterprise and combined that with the 24th century Akira Class starship, only they inverted the nacelle position. I was very happy when I first saw that, because the Akira is my favorite design in all of the Star Trek franchise.

Scratchpad doesn't mean anything except that they are working. They update scratchpad throughout development. The fact that they locked pre-release however may mean they are getting it ready. SoonTM- 1,592 replies
