  1. ^This. Fairings are a recent addition to KSP. Before we had them, we simply made our payloads more aerodynamic, and relied on limiting our thrust, ensured that we had adequate steering authority, and made our rockets stable in prograde flight. Best, -Slashy
  2. The idea is that mods are forbidden if they assist the player's attempt in any way. This includes whether they confer information that wouldn't normally be available, or simply add convenience. For a "modded" run to be valid, the mods must not make life easier for the player in any way. Space needs to be 100% as difficult as a stock install. BTW is a convenience for the player, therefore disqualified. Likewise, KJR. HTHs, -Slashy
  3. Agreed. Green monoliths are fair game *if* you can find 'em. Best, -Slashy
  4. The propellant in the duster can is flammable. Not unusual to get a fireball if you blow into a hot projector.
  5. I think so. Not sure It was during the first burn. You could see the plume coming out of the side of the bell
  6. They said it's running rich and they have an O2 fault. Hope they have the DV to make it.
  7. Looks like there's a fuel leak from the bell cooling lines.
  8. phantom000, Those equations are your best friend. All successful players utilize them, either directly or indirectly through mods. I would encourage you to become familiar with them. Feel free to hit me up with whatever parts you find confusing. Best, -Slashy
  9. Some user named "Bob" questioned what it was all about, and we all sorta went with it. Bob's a hero now. You kinda had to be there
  10. Link for tonight's launch: Best, -Slashy T-60 minutes...
  11. We all sucked at this game starting out. That's kinda the point. Sucking gives you the motivation to learn about aerospace engineering. The more you apply the lessons, the less you will suck in the future. Best, -Slashy
  12. Quick & dirty liquid fuel lifter for 27 tonnes: 1st stage: Twin Boar + Jumbo 64 2nd stage: Skipper+ X200-32+X200-16. Launch cost $35,000 not including payload. Best, -Slashy
  13. Posting this since Photobucket killed the original tutorial. This is the method I use for all powered landings on airless bodies. The video shows it being executed from a lowered periapsis, but I do it straight from low orbit. Best, -Slashy
  14. Agreed. We are all space geeks here and we should celebrate that. We won't always agree, but we shouldn't go making the disagreements personal. Best, -Slashy
  15. @DAL59, Hawk's IMO is 9103295. MMSI 366943250 I can't find a marine traffic map with an updated position, though. Best, -Slashy
  16. As @Freshmeat said, this game is played in Excel as much as in-game. If you learn to use the math instead of fearing it, KSP becomes quite easy. Best, -Slashy
  17. This song was stuck in my head when I woke up this morning, and I didn't want it. I woke up to an auditory hallucination of the harmonica (nothing else), and then spent several hours figuring out the artist and title. I haven't heard the song in years and had no reason to be thinking about it. It just bubbled up. I don't mind the song itself, I just hate it when that happens. Best, -Slashy
  18. The "La Kerbo Nostra" mod. Requires you to spend extra money on every transaction or risk catastrophic failures. "That's a nice rocket you've got there. It'd be a shame if something bad happened to it..."
  19. Definitely, reducing H2O2 to the concentrations necessary for rocketry is not for amateurs. That is some seriously wicked, deadly stuff. Also, you would not want to drive a ramjet with the exhaust of a pulsejet. A ramjet requires laminar, supersonic flow to do it's thing. And of course lots of O2 Best, -Slashy
  20. sh1pman, Unfortunately, that only works if the colonies are 100% self- sufficient. This is a far more daunting task than the job of setting up colonies. If the colonies are dependent on Earth for any supplies whatsoever, they are still doomed if a cataclysmic event should befall the Earth. As for the problems of overpopulation, space has never been the answer to that problem. There will always be plenty of living space. The problem is food, which requires air, arable land, water, livestock, and a complete biosphere. All lacking everywhere except on Earth. Best, -Slashy
  21. MinimalMinmus, Glad to see you tackling the Caveman Challenge with a vengeance! Best, -Slashy
  22. The first burn is to place the booster on an intercept trajectory with the landing zone. Second burn is to mitigate the effects of reentry heating. Final burn is to cancel vertical velocity and lateral errors at touchdown. It's too much to ask to have the booster on a perfect landing trajectory at the moment of cutoff/ sep. Plus, the faster the core is travelling at the moment of separation, the more exponentially difficult it becomes to recover it intact. Best, -Slashy
