  1. Notre Dame has stood for 800 years, so far. I can't think of one single steel (or iron) & concrete building to date that even comes close to that claim.
  2. Usually. Having past involvement with our county office of emergency management, where one of the main communications hub resides, including ARES (ARRL hams), I'm aware of such contingencies and operations. In a very big way, the whole communication network here (including current day MARS) is all tied together... military, police, fire, rescue, and ham volunteers... even NWS SKYWARN. As for Notre Dame, the State Police building is all of 500 feet away. I don't know where the nearest fire station is, but anyone looking out of that Police building should have known something serious was afoot. I would think the very first call of "Notre Dame is on fire" would produce an all out army of fire fighters. I've noted many people have questioned the timeline, all of the could have should have would have, and circumstances, but that's for France and the officials in Paris to deal with.
  3. Why don't you just post it or the link in Russian? I'll have my wife read it to me; She speaks better Russian than most Russians.
  4. The source was a family member who watched it live on (French) tv online. I'm told it was 90 minutes before the first fire engine arrived, and for a good while it was only the one elevated boom hose. In watching the video on YouTube myself, that pretty much is what I'm seeing also. And, I'll ask, with the Seine river just a few dozen yards/meters away, why was there no fireboat?... do they not have them? One of the news comments I heard was that firefighters couldn't get to the scene because of the crowds that had gathered. I find that a poor excuse; Why didn't police handle crowd control under such circumstances? I was impressed that people got together to form a human chain to move as many valuables from the cathedral as possible.
  5. Almost as annoying as YouTube videos which start off asking you to "Like & Subscribe" ... and I haven't even watched it yet. Why would one do that??? I got burned by Steam too, a long time ago, so I uninstalled it.
  6. Today I learned NASA has a new power source installed on the ISS...
  7. I'm to understand it burned for a full 2 hours before firefighters arrived... and then, only 1 sole hose arrived initially. What's up with that?
  8. Perfect description! Applies also to Twitter, Facebook, and a handful of other worthless 'apps'.
  9. Obviously NASA has a sense of humor!
  10. I have found that sometimes a 'failed drive' can still be read by Linux. I have this device, a universal drive adapter, which allows me to connect just about any kind of drive to my Linux box. You should maybe look into it, try it, the adapter(s) are cheap ... saved my butt and others I've rescued dozens of times. I usually hunt for such stuff at OWC (Other World Computing), but you can shop via Google just as easily. Edit: Actually, you might find these of easier access...

  12. Nothing wrong with burning bridges, it forces the barbarians to swim the moat in their attempt to reach you, making it easier for you to shoot them down like ducks in a barrel. Think strategic placement. My complaint for today is the weather. Two days ago it was like summer, beautiful. Yesterday, cold and rainy, blech. Today, warm and like spring again. Make up your mind Mother Nature! I think maybe I'm going fishing. The tide turns at noon and runs the afternoon, so, yea.
  13. Union workers everywhere are throwing hissy fits right about now.
  14. We have a thread for this already, and it's been running for quite a while.
  15. Being Spring has sprung, I put the bird feeder back up on the porch today. It was an absolute mob scene, at least 8 different species showed up. It was also humorous, watching as the squirrels sat below intently looking up and all around ... you could see them thinking ... trying to figure out a way to get to it.
  16. RIP Sydney Brenner. I remember reading in earnest some of your work with regard to cancer and cell division / death. You opened a door, thank you. https://phys.org/news/2019-04-sydney-brenner-decipher-genetic-code.html
  17. What point does that serve, especially if you don't know what it is that you're messing with?
  18. I just saw the trailer for the *new* Hellboy movie (and realized what's going on). No way in hell can Hellboy be anyone but Ron Perlman. And especially so without Guillermo del Toro behind the wheel.
  19. I had a desktop pc going through some major funkiness a while back, which I initially thought was the HD failing; Turns out it was the CD drive had fried. Once I pulled the drive, all became well again.
  20. I saw something akin to this the other day on tv news, and it was printed using plastics and aluminum from a 3D printer, runs on a variety of fuels, 10 minutes run time.
  21. Stress and anxiety can compound either of those ailments. You should consider your experience a warning, your body is trying to tell you something - listen to it. Go get a medical evaluation.
  22. Yes and no. Turns out the latest news says this one was caused by people lighting a bonfire. Every year or so the forest service here starts small fires to burn off the pine needles, a preventative measure against major forest fires. I remember one just a few years back that they started which ran away on them, and it ended up burning far more than this fire. This one was nothing.
  23. From your description, so do atrial fib or arrhythmia.
