I bought the game in May of 2014, and joined the forums a few months after that.

Is there a mod out there that adds the ability to show two or more views at once, i.e. map view in one window, IVA in another? If not, is it possible to start up two instances of the game that are "linked", so to speak?

Hi, sorry if this is the wrong place to put this; please feel free to move it. I'm trying to write a calculator that can convert a UT number to a KSP timestamp (i.e. Year 1, Day 238, etc.) What's the most efficient way of going about this in terms of mathematical formulas?

You know you're a nerd when you take it as a compliment. You know you're a nerd when you have a box full of unused electronic parts, not to mention an Arduino.

One time I found a planet that looked almost exactly like Eve with rings. Another time I found a green gas giant. (I admit it, all I look for in that game are planets that look like things from KSP)

Challenge: Cheapest Kerbin orbiter for 2 tourists

Shouldn't this go in the Challenges section? -
KSP has been featured in Astronomy Magazine!
livefree75 replied to livefree75's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I received mine today, but I tend to receive my issues early. It should come around the general time of the month you normally receive the magazine. -
I'm sure at least a few members of the Kommunity get Astronomy magazine. The latest issue (March's) has a section devoted to space-related computer programs. I opened up to the section and lo and behold, there was a grinning Kerbal in front of a cloud of fire and smoke! The description of the game includes basic information about the game, and tells about Squad's collaboration with NASA and the B612 Foundation. I thought you guys would think this was cool, and I wonder if Squad knows about it!

You are either talking about radial, antiradial, normal, or antinormal. If the line passes through the planet, it's radial (or antiradial)

When you suddenly push yourself back in your seat at school simulating an engine burn. When you wish cars could translate left and right (Get on that, General Motors). When your dream of becoming an astronaut/engineer has been revitalized just because of KSP. -
...for SSTOs. The building is built partly underground...

Yes. The software subteam in my FIRST Robotics team was completely caught off guard. We thought it might have been a Wi-Fi issue. I had no idea it was a internet-wide event.

Whenever someone gets confused about spaceflight, I really enjoy teaching them about it. For example: Recently I did a project on Johannes Kepler for school. I mentioned his three laws and had a computer set up with a gravity simulator. A teacher came up to me and started asking me a whole bunch of questions about orbital mechanics. I was thrilled when I found I was able to answer them all because of KSP. A while later, I found out that the teacher actually knew a lot about that kind of stuff and was just testing me to see how much I knew. Also, one time I spent the whole homeroom period discussing the science of "The Martian" with my homeroom teacher. (Off topic: If you guys haven't seen The Martian, you definitely should. Mark Watney is totally a Kerbal.)

Cool! I want to get a job at some point, but I will have to wait until June due to school. I might try to shovel driveways, 'cause up where I live it snows a lot.

Amazing! If I had seen those pics on Google Images or something, I would have thought they were Hubble photos!

What's your favorite/least favorite environments?
livefree75 replied to CAKE99's topic in The Lounge
Favorite environment: Early morning next to a lake, watching the mist rise from the water. Preferably 60F (15.5C) or warmer. Least favorite environment: Catacombs. If there's a catacombaphobia I have it. I'm fine with caves as long as there is a clearly marked, railed, brightly lighted path, but you could easily get lost in a catacomb network. You would only be able to wait in the complete darkness as hunger, dehydration, and hallucinations claimed your life after about 3 days. (This has actually happened to people, look it up.) EDIT: For this reason, I can never seem to really get into Minecraft. -
Why does an orbit increase in altitude with more velocity?
livefree75 replied to Fez's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Sorry, I didn't explain it very well. Think of throwing a ball on Earth (or any celestial body). If you toss it at a vertical speed of, say, 10 m/s, it will go higher than if you threw the ball at 5 m/s. This is because, while the ball is still accelerating at roughly the same rate (9.8 m/s^2), the faster the ball is traveling upward, the longer it will take to accelerate to a vertical speed of zero. Here's the equation if you're interested: t = Vi/g where t represents the time to apogee, Vi represents the initial vertical speed in m/s, and g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s^2 on Earth/Kerbin). In space it's a lot more complicated, but hopefully this answers your question. -
If I met a conspiracy theorist, I would probably ask him what evidence he has for NASA being fake, then explain that trying to make everyone believe we landed on the moon would be harder than the actual mission itself. If that still didn't work, I'd just walk away.

Why does an orbit increase in altitude with more velocity?
livefree75 replied to Fez's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Simply explained, if you increase your velocity, it will take longer for gravity to slow you down. allowing you to coast higher. Vice versa for decreasing velocity. -
I know this is a little broad, but I think the fact that KSP has mostly realistic gravity simulations is what makes the game unique. Before I started playing it, I didn't even know that rockets had to go horizontally to get into orbit. (Imagine my first attempts to orbit Kerbin ) If you want a more specific feature, I think the vast world/solar system is awesome (despite being 1/10 IRL size). There is so much to explore in KSP I could play it for years. Also, 100 posts!

I think Mystery Goo is a collection of microorganisms that have the ability to bond and synchronize with each other, effectively creating a bloblike single life form.
-
The main reason the game is simplified is because Squad originally aimed the game at beginners. Too much complexity and newbies would face a steep learning curve which might turn them away. That's what mods are for.
