I have troubles with mathematics myself, but a huge respect for it. Reminds me of Neal Stephenson's novel Anathem: "Our opponent is an alien starship packed with atomic bombs, I said. We have a protractor." They figured out an approaching starship's trajectory (Brachistochrone, of course) using a protractor, a length of string and some careful measurements.

LES tower action group
moogoob replied to EVA_Reentry's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I use abort for popping fairings, mostly. My actual "abort" action group is 10 (aka zero), followed by 9 to pop the chutes and abort to pop the nosecone off (if used). All of this only counts in the three or four launches that I have crew abort engineered in, of course. Most craft just have to wing it in an emergency. (Actually, that"s the official Nastybird abort mode: Wing it. :p) -
Today I found myself playing a lot of Fallout: New Vegas. I have a ton of mods installed, of course. Having fun with a speech/barter/luck based role-play character - max strength 3 and no armour heavier than DT 2 allowed, until purchase of the strength implant, then those become 4 and DT4 respectively. My choice of guns is limited appropriately by the limited strength. Despite these attempts to nerf the character, I can still take out Cazadores without much problem.

Went to Eve with a descender probe for the first time in a long time. Absolutely minimal mission - launch to orbit was via Cargobird shuttle, then the combined transfer stage/orbiting communications relay (in role-play only as I don't have any antenna mods installed) fired into a higher parking orbit for warp to the transfer point. The only real error was that I didn't have enough fuel in my transfer stage to circularize at Eve, so had to put up with an elliptical orbit. Oh well!

I made a super-massive SETO shuttle powered by a Mammoth so... The wings aren't the issue. Balancing against that massive engine is.

I think it give them a "I've been Shanghai'ed into this mission, I should be home sipping mint juleps" vibe.

If you use MJ (which you said you did!) you might want to try the Advanced Interplanetary Transfer, under the Maneuver Planner. It lets you use "Porkchop" plots, which are a graph of Delta-v to intercept a target planet ordered by colour, with Departure time on one axis and travel time on the other. What it lets you do is find out what combo is most efficient, or plan a quicker transfer if you prefer to get there faster versus saving fuel. In either case, it should send you directly to the planet in question. My piece of advice - don't activate it from a low orbit. I've had it try and dip me into the atmosphere when burning aggressively to Eeloo once or twice. I don't need to add that that's a bad idea, especially at interplanetary velocities. Activate the maneuver planner from a 200 or so KM orbit instead.

How did you get EVA controls working? (I've had no end of difficulty trying to map EVA controls to my X360 controller. It just refuses to work, so i have to use WASD for that. I use it for just about everything else, though!)

Someone beat Dark Souls with a Guitar Hero controller so anything's possible. To be honest, it's no less odd a rocket controller than a keyboard - which if you've forgotten was originally a device built for operating a typewriter. Just saying.
-
Euro Truck Simulator 2. Have to build up the Spinny Roundy Lorry Company, employee by employee! Haven't gotten American Truck Sim yet, but played the demo and it's pretty fun, too.

1920 x 1080 does have the benefit of matching 1080p content at native resolution - AKA compatibility might be greater, especially with movie and youtube content, and some games that refuse to match up to less-common resolutions. My next monitor will likely be 120hz and 3Dvision compatible.
-
It can. But I could run KSP perfectly well for a while now. C:S required me to buy a new video card, as A)it was really slow on my old card and B) the act of saving for some reason crashed the game due to lack of Vram.

Your computer setup (and any funny stuff about it)
moogoob replied to Ogcorp Squirrel's topic in The Lounge
I have an... AMD somethingorother, which is sad I can't remember because I built it myself in 2013. I have 4gb ram (to be upgraded next) and a newish Nvidia... can't remember that either, middle of the road card. Plays most things ok. Oh yeah, my onboard sound doesn't work, never did. I assume it was a manufacturing thing with my motherboard, never got it replaced. Instead, I use a USB sound device. Heh. Also there's my 2009 Macbook - It CAN play KSP, but not well enough to have anything resembling fun. -
I go... medium. My most-launched rockets are... size 2, so Mainsails or Skippers. My shuttle, the Nastybird is mk2 as well. Probes tend to include size 1 fuel tanks and other extraneous junk. So, yeah. Medium.

What are your close calls with low fuel?
moogoob replied to KerbonautInTraining's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I once did a powered landing on Eve that made it - but ran out of fuel right at landing. Did it another time on Tylo - ran out right as I touched down. Both were hairy! -
Challenge: Build a mini-Space Shuttle
moogoob replied to Triop's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Why didn't I see this before! Perfect time for the original Angrybird! I haven't tried this design in 1.05 yet, but should work out OK. Launch is vertical, on top of a rocket stack with more than the usual number of fins at the back to compensate for all the drag up front. Re-entry is easy too. Reason I don't use them much is because its sister ship, the Nastybird, is much more fun to fly and perhaps more importantly seats six. -
I use an xbox 360 controller too. Only issue I've had is that EVA seems impossible to map correctly, so I always have to end up using the keyboard... oh well.

Leaving Command Seat Forces Kerbals On Top Of Craft
moogoob replied to HvP's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I have one rover that has a roof over the command seat - every time I get out, the Kerbal pops up onto the roof. Not a game-killer, but pretty silly nonetheless. -
Kerbal Space Program 1.1 Hype Train Thread.
moogoob replied to Whirligig Girl's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I'm waiting for the bug fixes - fixed fairing body lift, interplanetary atmosphere fixes (Jool aerobrake, Duna chute deploy speed) and so on. That fairing issue flipped a launch on me earlier today. -
How to heat-proof ships?
moogoob replied to quasarrgames's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Are you trying to aerocapture the whole ship? Do you have any fuel left to slow down first? I take tons more than I need for that reason. Why not include a (detachable, heat-shielded) pod that the science and kerbals hop into to complete re-entry while the mothership just does a flyby and zooms off into inter-planetary space. Or burns up, your choice. Have you considered slingshotting off of the Mun to reduce your velocity somewhat? That's what comes to mind if I were returning from an interplanetary mission. -
Career-regression - Mechjeb solutions?
moogoob replied to Osprey's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
That unlocks SAS functionality, and perhaps SmartASS. There are several more unlocks, the second one gives you the Maneuver planner, the third or perhaps fourth are needed to get the launch autopilot. (I should know, I've done several career games with MJ) -
A career probe mission to the outer moons of Jool. Did it twice actually, and the second time was even better. Took a single lander to both Pol and Bop, in that order. As in, landed on Pol, did science, took off and docked with its mothership, flew to Bop and did the same. Hit "Explore" contracts for Jool, Pol and Bop. The second time? Nailed a Tylo transfer.
-
I did this once - put three or four pairs of Separatrons for the final circularization into orbit, then fired them as needed. I don't think I even needed the last pair. It wasn't a good orbit, but it was an orbit, all right.

A triangle between Jeb, Bill, and Bill's crazy contraptions. Bill builds crazy ship, Jeb flies it. Both argue over who loves it more when Jeb arrives back from orbit, somehow alive.
