Regarding issues with Hyperedit in 1.8.1 I have something to report. I'm seeing a problem with decoupling after using Hyperedit to reach bodies other than Kerbin. When decoupling a section of a vehicle on the launch pad, the behaviour is normal, as it is when I Hyperedit to Kerbin orbit. However if I use Hyperedit to reach the orbit of any other body, the decoupled part freezes in its orbital path (stationary above the planet surface). I've had this with both the Eve vehicle I first encountered the problem on, as well as a simple test vehicle (Mk1 capsule, fuel tank and a decoupler). At first I thought this was an issue with the Beta version of Hyperedit that I was using, but the behaviour was the same when I used te 1.5.8 version. Just in case I ran the test again with all other mods removed and the problem with decouplers persisted. Additionally, just to make sure, I flew My Eve lander to the Mun for a quick test of decoupling it without Hyperediting, and the decouple worked properly, but if I Hyperedited that test vehicle (booster and all) to the Mun and decoupled, the problem occured. Is there a more suitable version for use with 1.8.1? BTW... this only seems to be a problem when in orbit. If I Hyperedit to for example Eve orbit, then use the Ship Lander to put it on a vertical decent path, then Drop the vehicle, decoupling works fine.

How much reserve fuel (delta-V) do you take?
purpleivan replied to paul23's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Depends on how much attention I'm paying to my construction. I've ditched a stage meant to just circularise my Kerbin orbit, then push me towards the Mun, just a few hundred metres above the the surface, on the way to a landing, more times than I'd like to admit. -

Nice... the Photo Manipulation and General Skullduggery dept thanks you. -
Can't help thinking this looks like a pic of the "catch of the day"... it was this long I tell ya, with fins the size of barn doors.

Part recovery from orbit.
purpleivan replied to RiggerLee's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Had a similar thing happen to me 2 or 3 years ago, but for me it was a command seat, which was on the surface of the Mun. I spent far too long trying to pick the thing up with the AGU, as I raised and lowered the landing legs of my little trash grabber of a lander, that I'd parked on top of the thing. Finally I gave up on it and marked the contact as complete in the F12 menu. -
buildings indestructible in ksp 1.8?
purpleivan replied to Flying dutchman's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Ok, Gunners Jebediah Kerman and Val Kerman, reporting for duty. They heard of the alleged indestructability of their recently upgrade digs, and decided to put it to the test... for science! They decided that the appropriate place to observe the launch of their demon of destruction, was from as close as kerbally possible. OK... she's lit and headed straight at those big barn doors. Getting close now... fingers in ears time... wait for the inferno of destuction. aaaaaand... nothing. Not a sausage, just a shiny, straight from the 1.8 box it came from, VAB. So let's try again. Ok, she's away aaaaand, hmmm... that does not look like a firestorm of propellant fueled glory at the back end there What that looks like to me is failure. The first attempt to stage the engine and the decoupler similataneously worked by complete fluke, and the next few attempts results in only expensive garbage being left on the pad. Ok, time for Plan B. Try and stage the engine first then the decoupler a split second later. Sure I can do it, just gotta be quick about it or... The whole thing heads (roughly) towards the VAB at conciderable speed. With the inevitable results. One very broken Jeb... and Val, well, she didn't make. Clean up crew couldn't even find the remains. RIP Val Kerman 00:00:00 Day 0 - 00:00:17 Day 0 Fired up the game for the first time in a couple of months, after installing 1.8 and this was the very first thing I did. -
The 1.8 update looks like it's a nice bit of medical attention, if it were needed.

I don't know about docking ports attached to hinges, but attached to pistons they can be a bit on the floppy side. I used that set up on an aircraft that carried a rover in it's belly, that was deployed by extending the piston. When in flight the rover would wobble around a fair bit, not so much that it interferred with the flight, but the wheels would poke through the fuselage from time to time. Switching to the view from the rover inflight was a bit more dramatic. Those wheels are the those on the bottom of the rover that the view is from, so some kind of dimensional distortion was in play obviously

Is it just me or on the day that likes are back, did the ability to quote existing posts disappear . It's gotta be me right... right?

Interesting image, it looks like the "slap some wings on a Saturn V to make it reusable" concept that was concidered but dropped, a while before the decision to go with what became the Space Shuttle.

KSP 2.0 why we need it and what it needs
purpleivan replied to Renae's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
The kind of work being would not likely be possible under an expansion, as the changes are too fundemental. Even if it was possible to do as an expansion, the amount of work required, would mean that the price of that expansion would need to be several times that of a typical expansion. -
I think it was texture replace that provided the reflection in the visor, but that part of it's been busted for a while. For the glow on the lights, that the bloom effect from KS3P, a post processing plugin that provides a whole bunch of stuff (bloom, depth of field, ambient occlusion etc.).

Picking these was pure torture. I've got some 6500 images of KSP related stuff on Imgur and that's far too many to look through, just skimmed really. I also wanted to keep to a reasonable(ish) number of images to post (could have posted so, so many). After picking about a dozen images I realised one small issue...my monitor is 1200p and I grab my images framed for that so aren't any use for this, as the challenge stipulates 16:9. So I gave the many folders on my PC a quick look over and cropped some screenshots to submit. Anyway, here goes my submission for this challenge. Wallpapers Pure screenshots.

The one mission that has always gotten away
purpleivan replied to Rocket Farmer's topic in KSP1 Discussion
The that got away for me was a challenge (can't recall the name now) that I had a crack at early this year. It required the recovery of a 20 ton stranded vehicle (with no propellant in it) from 10km offshore on Eve, back to Kerbin. My plan was to send a huge lifter to the planet (check), then a rocket powered recovery "boat" and a wheeled transport to (check and check) to the Purple Planet. I had all my stuff designed, all I had to do was test them. The lifter and transport worked well, with my rocket powered erector (this was before the robotic parts were added) working as planned. Even the recovery of the vehicle to the shortline went fine in "simulation" tests on Eve. Yep, everything was good. The recovery "boat" did a fine job. The stranded ship could be got onto the transporter at the shoreline. The transporter/erector did its job attaching the stranded ship to the ascent vehicle. The launcher could drag the 20 tons of recovered vehicle into orbit. Just one thing... the wheels on the transport broke every few metres, meaning that taking it's cargo from the shoreline to the launch site (it would have been a few kilometers) would have been hellish. So I gave it all up after several days of work on it. I did something out of it though... playing around with boats for the first time led to my Kerbin Sorta-Circumnavigation trip. -
Made it there and back to all the bodies in the Stock system more than once, including several trips to/from Eve and a Jool 5 run in addition to other trips to the Green Giant's system. Only been to Moho, Dres and Eelee 2 or 3 times each.

None (I think)... didn't even know you could.

So maybe I should ply them with cake and candy to get it up to 6502 for some retro cred.- 929 replies

totm aug 2023 What funny/interesting thing happened in your life today?
purpleivan replied to Ultimate Steve's topic in The Lounge
For measuring the distance between two points in Google Earth, they provide a tool for that. Click the blue ruler shaped icon on the top bar to get it. Bunch of other measuring tools in there too (path, circle etc.) -
Mote in God's Eye would be good... just to see those little moties running around fixing stuff. Only situation I know of when the coffee tasting good is an "oh no" moment.

Here's a few more from round where I live. 10 minutes after taking the last of these I dinged my camera, jumping up some 30-40cm cut stone blocks, instead of using the steps. Tripped and the thing just just caught the ground. No visible damage done, but the focus was thrown off and wouldn't come back. The cost of of repairing it was going to be about 90% the cost of buying a new one of the same model (which I've done), so not too happy about that. At least I've got a spare battery and lens cap now.

Your mistake was using missiles instead of jet powered rovers.
