Von Neumann probes are designed to record information about planets, self-replicate, and spread thru-out the universe to return data to the host civilization that created them. They are an exploration and discovery tool that a space-faring civilization could use to find other planets in the vasty deep. Given that they self replicate, and have plenty of time, It's pretty much inevitable that they will evolve beyond recognition in the blink of an eye (relatively speaking) I think maybe we, DNA-based earthlings are the decedents of rouge von neumann probes that mutated to the point of no-longer serving their original purpose. (or did they!)

A rover with steep requirements
nhnifong replied to nhnifong's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Well I did not have my pictures when I made this thread, but here is my best shot so far I lost mechjeb and had to manually land on my wheels 4 times to slow down. I'm hoping the next iteration will be something more durable. I definitely have the payload capacity to bring more of those ridiculously strong and light legs, but Maybe that's not the solution. I know I could just cfgedit them, but that's just not satisfying. -
I've been keeping a monitor on kerbalspaceprogram.com's latency and it just jumped up to 20 seconds for like three minutes. Big things are brewing. They might have just release some kind of patch or who knows what. Or maybe I'm just obsessed. I'm at work so I can't test the program to see if it's going to update itself. anyone else care to join me in wild speculation?

Sorry If this belongs in spacecraft exchange... I am in search of a rover design which can do many things, ideally using the medium size vehicle from tosh's cart mod. (but the truck is also a viable alternative) * it must carry three kerbals. * it must be able to tumble on the mun (or even Kerbin) at a speed of about 30 m/s without breaking crucial components. * it must be able to right itself using robotic parts or legs * It must be able to lift it's own weight on the mun, and cary enough fuel for a landing on the moon and departure back to kerbin. * Everything but the parachute must decouple from the command pod at the final stage. * It must be balanced any mods allowed, but I'd be very impressed by a solution using only cart, robotics, and novapunch Can you design such a vehicle? what's your best shot?

If you could cause a perfect orbit, I'll bet you would cause a zero-division error. I'm not sure why, just a hunch.

Igor Sikorsky Prize: Stock Helicopter Challenge
nhnifong replied to zekes's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
How on Kerbin am I supposed to make a stock helicopter? -
AFAIK The docking rings in kosmos are only for decoration. Any instructions on how to use them are a prank, because they don't do anything. However, the design is proposed to be the standard when docking is actually implemented.

Honestly I'm just not very fond of rules, but I changed the original post, with some clarification. I think you should try it the intended way, it's pretty hard.
-
No, but if you had read the earlier post by endlesswaves, you might see that breaking the challenge in that way has already been done, so in addition to it not being all that difficult, it's also no longer new.

Consider all that junk "cargo" and try to get it up there with you

let's see (sorry, no download links, too much work) Kosmos pack - great stylish parts and folding solar panels. Silisko Edition - Nova's set of parts BACE pack - some space station parts Probodobodyne - fer makin space probes Damned Aerospace - propellers crewtank - a part than can hold three kerbals, and comes empty Damned Robotics - Movable servo parts and claws Zoxygene - a sort-of-broken-all-the-time life support mod camera pack - little cameras you can place on your rocket and switch to with F8 comsat relays - set up a communications relay network and use it to control craft! _ I really like this one Mapsat - generate maps of the altitude of the planets Mechjeb - autopilot, and a dependency of many other mods.

And yes, if you want to disqualify this entry then go ahead. I'll be attempting a non-destructive contribution as well. Yeah, I see what you mean. That's clever but I'm not going to bother "disqualifying" anyone. It's not like there's anything at stake here.

[UNOFFICIAL/FANMADE] 0.17 Discussion Thread 2
nhnifong replied to kacperrutka26's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Heh, I just watch Nova's feed. http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/member.php/3898-NovaSilisko -
Thanks for the good test. I've also noticed that there can be a huge delay when fuel tanks run out. I wonder what it's doing...

And here's the log: I'm very proud of the results! 6,102 m! Wow! that must be a pretty stable rocket. Where did you end up putting the aerospike? I guess it's on the back in your picture?
-
haha, I guess you could call it "staging"

Planet Name: Telarus Planet Parent (The body the planet is orbiting): Kerbol Planet Type: Rocky Planet's orbital characteristics: Same as Kerbin, but opposite phase. Always on the other side of the sun. Planet's diameter: 2/3 kerbin Planet's gravity (in cm/s2): IDK Planet's atmosphere: half kerbins Planet's average temperature: somewhat cold Planet's average polar temperature: real cold Planet's landscape description: barren, but with some liquid water, lichen on the land, and a flourishing population of cephalopods in the ocean. Maps/Photos (Optional): Description: It's like a sister planet to Kerbin where things didn't turn out quite right for a fully developed biosphere What would you do on the planet?: Learn about how life could have evolved under different circumstances Lander/Plane Designs for planet (Optional): light rover, or a submarine for researching the life in the ocean.

In this challenge, you will use one of every stock part in KSP! You may only use one of each part and you must use every part. no mods allowed. Unless you want to use mechjeb to look at stats. (but you may not use it for piloting) Your score is your maximum altitude. Order up! EDIT: Fine fine, since I must make this rule, you have to try to get the whole rocket up to your record altitude without breaking anything off or staging. That was the point of this challenge. I think you will find that weighing the many constraints against each other is thought-provoking and difficult. Achieving balance is hard enough, but assuming you do that, you only get one strut, and you have to use a fuel line somewhere, ideally in a place such that you can burn all your fuel. And if you make it out of the atmosphere in one peice, you have to think about the new center of thrust you will have without the air-breathing engines. Clarification, you can use staging, if you use it fairly. The dropped stages must include empty tanks. Remember, success on a technicality is never as impressive as a genuine creative solution.

Here's a better test craft. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14567061/lagship2.craft It's liquid rockets only, and smaller at 404 parts I'm getting 10 FPS with it, as measured by fraps.
-
Lol, I guess it's not a very good test craft. I didn't bother to fix the staging for anything except the first stage.
-
Are you using a copious amount of struts?
-
Ah thanks, I thought fraps was just for recording video.
-
To get some reliable data on lag, lets do a controlled experiment! Download the craft https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14567061/lagship2.craft Run it on a fresh install of 0.16. default setting and default (windowed) resolution. take off straight up and measure your framerate. Post your computer specs, and the framerate you got, after launching, during the first stage. (warning this rocket was not designed to operate after the first stage.) each section contains exactly 100 parts, so feel free to take it up to absurd levels but please report the results without modification first. My machine: Intel i5-2500K @ 3.30 GHz Nvidia GeForce GTX 570 framerate 10 FPS If you know that your GPU does not have the latest drivers installed, please report that.
