More Greebling at the front. FTL is complicated, Yo.
Are the dishes too Event Horizon pointy?
Should I keep the IXS stuff on the sides or move them to the middle like before?
What do you think?

A change in the laws of physics.
My understanding was it might actually be easier that all the complexities of warping space but, if that's the cold hard science...

It's probably been said before, but all a aircraft needs is enough airflow over it's wings to get it off the ground. There are a few ultralights that can essentially take off with virtually no speed into a strong enough headwind.
I've always kinda wanted to stick a massive fan on top of a building and use it to land a conventional plane 'vertically'. I'd need a plane though, and a building, and a giant fan, and money.
None of which I have.

So, similarly to my old warpship thread, I wanted to get idea's going about what it would take to build a ship capable of jumping via some form of stabilized wormhole. Based on my limited knowledge, this might be more realistic but, it's a topic that seems to get seldom discussed.
The closest we've probably seen was in Interstellar and there they had a conveniently stable one to go through.
Thoughts? Science? Cold-hard reality?

<rant> A little surprised this hasn't been deleted for delving into politics slightly. That said... It's yet another meaningless waste of money That will double our national debt, and drastically increase taxes brought back by a guy (being kind here) that has absolutely no fraking idea what he's doing.
And nearly more annoyingly, the number of Sci-Fi fans that think the world works anything like a Sci-Fi franchise.
It's the stupidest idea yet.
Now, taking that extra money and dumping it into NASA I would PROBABLY support. </rant>

Here is a good image of what it might be
That's a interesting pic, but it has some rather obvious flaws, like, how do you access the bridge when your on Earth or mars? There's no ladder.

Pic before off to work. Made some shape changes to the SSTO. bulged it up a bit at the reactors and passenger cabin, moved the intakes up and back. (hard to see here)Added some FTL greebles to the front, Indicating some if it's direct inspiration from the IXS. The front cutout will get smaller, kinda thought I was gonna add more, gonna add a few dishes too. Wanted to indicate visually warp is not a simple process.
I'd still really like some opinions / feedback. -

Thanks! I managed to lower the poly count to 1050 after removing some unnecessary faces.
While it's a good habit to keep poly counts low, you don't necessarily NEED to, this isn't 2005. You can make stuff that's like 3 or 4k, You can get away with something much higher if it's only going to be used once per ship. You just need to think about what the average count on the ship is going to be. I made a Mach Effect thruster for FreeThinker that I couldn't really get under 30k, although that was a special case.

I agree with @TiktaalikDreaming, Most of those are rather basic shapes and shouldn't take more than a few minutes to recreate at a lower res. In Blender you could probably use Edge Dissolve as well, a tool I've grown quite fond of. I have no familiarity with solidworks though.

Hello! I had started a development thread for my cubesat mod, but I realized I need more practice, both in terms of technical stuff as well as imagination... Is there anyone who would let me do some minor modelling stuff for me? I work in Wings3D, btw.
I used to work in Wings 3D making stuff for VegaStrike, a loooooong time ago. As I and most other modders here would suggest though I've moved on to Blender. The learning curve is a bit steep but, there's a endless supply of tutorials on YouTube and plenty of people here to ask questions if you need help.

I am texturing for the first time, ever! What are the things you look for in a texture? What should I add (or subtract) from the following texture to make it appealing to players?
IMO I would at least double or triple this particular resolution. If your very new to texturing (or try to avoid it... like me), Blender's texture painter is pretty good.

What was the information that caused the redesign?
love the work so far!
I was referring to reactionless drives as a way to save fuel but some even recenter news put a big cloud over it, so i didn't change anything.
Dual-mode reactor/torch drive is cooler anyway.

I am rather confined by the dimensions of the cargo bay, that's one reason I went with a short-nose. I've got to add folding wings as it is. I could probably make it a bit wider though. I was thinking about a thermal power receiver since there would be a convenient huge reactor in orbit to provide extra shove. What are your thoughts on propulsion?
-
So, time for the SSTO mock-up. I'm not real sure how I want to go about this. I'd really like @FreeThinker's opinion if he could spare the time.
Or anyone else that can nitpick the hell out of this.
Currently, this mock-up is about 1.5 decks tall, and kinda a combination of Space Shuttle and Harrier. In a Atmosphere, it would use it's reactor to heat atmosphere and vector it out the sides for vertical landing, OR possible a huge air tank for it to launch itself into the air via the same nozzles and then fly conventionally. The front is a bit snub-nosed, my reasoning is you'd be able to vary the thrust around various lift surfaces like is looking may be the future of control on aircraft.
Highlighted is where I want to put the cargo bay. as the whole bottom would be heat resistant, I'm not sure how good a idea though the harrier style thruster protrusions are, as I believe anything exposed at hypersonic velocities is know to cause heating issues.
Not quite as much going on at the rear yet. My basic question is what am I going to power this with? I'd like to be able to achieve orbit from a 2G world, I was thinking I might do another Daedalus style fusion torch but, it seems like it might be overkill, and not as useful at this small scale. Preferably, something I could use in a atmosphere without irradiating everything, although the planned ascent route is use atmosphere to fling the ship as high as possible, and then activate the orbital engine, well clear of the atmosphere. I'll probably extend a bottom lip over the engine SpaceX BFR style. as a heat-shield.
-
The important question though is does it contain Rainbow Road?
-
So, I went back and did a bunch of work on this today. Here's a pic with the radiators off to show the changes better. I moved the rear RCS so they clear the radiators, filled in the rear considerably, stuck a docking airlock towards the front that's mostly a placeholder right now, and added plenty of fuel tanks. I like it mostly but feel I need to do something with the upper and lower tank. I was thinking maybe split them into two each though I won't get anywhere near as much fuel in there.Thoughts?
-
Just gave the Mach effect thruster a proper test. Epic. @FreeThinker did the EM drive get a boost? It seems a good deal more powerful than the last time I took it for a spin. Like 100x as much.

-
Figured it out thanks to @Eleusis La Arwall. For any future forum lurkers, KSP is apparently inconsistent with their thrusttransform axis. Regular engines are Z, RCS are Y axis.
-
Please excuse the noob question but, I'm adding a RCS function to a part for @FreeThinker and there appears to be a trick for naming RCS thrust transforms properly so the game recognizes them. I originally set them all up for the different directions with the exact same name, since that appeared to be the correct way.
After investigating some old .mu files it appears they have to be named (something)thrusttransform.001 with the numbers indicating the direction. Would anyone happen to know the directions and their corresponding numbers?

And I think it's been on it's way out for quite a while honestly. I've had constant issues with USB's disconnecting and recently started getting system lockups when playing games, and it seems to be getting worse. I just had to reset again when windoze refused to accept anything from the keyboard or mouse. I thought the lockup issue might have been the graphics card, but 1080's are supposed to be quite reliable and newer or older drivers don't seem to make any difference.
Originally I wanted to upgrade from my AM3 to a i7 but that means I need to sink $500+ into another motherboard, CPU and ram. and I'm a bit lacking in 'funds' currently, since this is pushing 5 years old now.
Thank you for listening to this random rant.

Coding challenge. The KSP engine apparently won't allow disc shaped planets.
Cause, physics, ya'know?
you could probably fake it with a very small planet with strong gravity and Konstructs.
-
lol. There's probably no reason it wouldn't work in KSP but it would be confined to regular gravity so, going anywhere besides the middle would be like climbing a vertical wall.
Could be a interesting engineering challenge actually.

For KSPIE, I'm looking for an artist which can make me the engine model for the Bussard Ramjet
This is what it preferable should look like
To be clear, I only need the engine part starting from the compression assembly
I'll still take a shot at it if your willing to wait a few months, there's just a few projects I'd like to finish first. I actually stumbled on a model of that I'd kinda like to replicate.

*edit* Also mach effect thruster coming this weekend. I promise.

While I cannot speak for every law and certainly understand your concern, I'm pretty sure recreating things from franchises is legal so long as you don't profit from it. Otherwise there's about a thousand Enterprises, TARDIS's, Star Destroyers, B5 ships, Stargate ships, Firefly's, and probably a dozen other franchises that have gotten off lucky.
