  1. Isn't this pretty easy to refute, though? Supposing the cost to save the life of your grandmother was that everyone else in the world had to work 12 hour days, six days per week for one company, for low wages, doing whatever they are told, by managers who are ratbags, all their life until age 65...? This supposition may seem just as absurd as the claim you mention above, but it immediately establishes that there are prices too high and provides the avenue for the refutation of the claim. And once we've established the nature of the problem (cost allocation) we can go ahead and discuss the actual price -- using real numbers. In the 70s and 80s, air safety was quite patchy and the news organizations made a feeding frenzy on the two or three spectacular accidents that occurred every year (not counting hijacking/terrorist incidents). It really has gotten amazingly better. Nevertheless, in 1996 a Valujet flight burned after take-off and subsequently crashed into the Florida Everglades. It was determined that oxygen cylinders, stowed in the cargo hold, had contributed to a fire that burned so hot that the jet had no time to return to its airport of departure. Elizabeth Dole, wife of Vice-President Dole, was the head of the Department of Transport at the time. She sought to mandate that all airlines install fire detection and suppression equipment in the cargo holds of all larger passenger planes. This was not, however, the way the NTSB works. It came to light that this organization uses a cost-benefit analysis in which the hypothetical "value of a human life" was figured at 650,000 US$ (at that time, as best I recall). It was also pointed out that it was ALREADY ILLEGAL to stow oxygen cylinders on passenger planes as cargo and that that regulation had been callously violated. The mandate was fought off and the status quo stayed the same. As far as I know, no similar accident, due to the same cause, has occurred since. You can't make reasonable decisions when you include so-called "priceless" quantities into the decision-making. Meanwhile, the air transport industry has now become one of the indisputably safest ways to travel. I will end by pointing out that another completely "heartless" industry/endeavor is the medical industry which conducts ruthless self-examination of the efficacy of its own procedures. At least at the technological level, that is responsible for the impressive advances in medical science that we've been privileged to observe/enjoy during the last half-century and more.
  2. So very, very good to hear from you, dear friend. Wish you the very best with your endeavors in these trying times. Welcome to Kayak Club, brave-hearted Aviator and congratulations on finding what is indeed Kamp David. Same on landing and planting a flag. Bonuses for finding the monolith, too. No one had before noted its presence (I myself kept it quite secret!). And kudos most of all for the use of abstruse, extraordinary and/or frightfully rarefied vocabulary. Zounds, indeed!! You will find that sort of thing very well-received here at Kayak Club, I must say! Be advised that the Record of Landmarks for the first 15 entries or so are currently being reconstructed after a drunken error by the Lowly Tally-Keeper, who has been punished by being put on rations... And your score will duly be entered and your name recorded in the Leaderboard. Welcome.
  3. I'm commenting only as an avid spectator of this thread (not a participant) and maybe this ought to be spun off into another topic but... ...I really appreciate what modders do for KSP. But I think it's good to exclude mods for a challenge in order to have an LCD level playing field. (At KerbalX, I avoid mods for the same reason: widest possible audience.) On the other hand, though DLC is optional, it is Squad and it does fly the flag for Squad. I think MH/BG parts should be allowable in any challenge and people who don't think it's worth patronizing Squad by purchasing that discretionary DLC are not excluded from such challenges because of it, although it may put them at a slight disadvantage. Or glass half-full: give them more incentive to consider purchasing the DLC.
  4. Just as an experiment, put 4x spaceplane wings on it, mounted as low down as possible. See if it still flips (it won't). That will be overkill, so then scale back. Try delta wings, for example.
  5. Q.E.D. In a fight against Mother Nature, you cannot expect to win. So don't burn down the house, in addition. Personally, I would rather see the human race put effort into finding out how this happened and taking steps to prevent it happening again.
  6. I understand the theory, which is based on the theory that dying people can be saved in ICUs. Perhaps if less thought had been spent on drones 'herding' people, out for a walk, and more on what to do about the concentration of the old and vulnerable in nursing homes?
  7. [snip] "Giant oaks germinate from small seeds" (Welcome to the forum, if it's not too late for me to say so!) Did you know that there is one (1) whole (complete) mod dedicated to this subject?? It is called VABReorienter. Aligning the launch direction intuitively can be super-important for tricky launches that require quick reflexes, such as those into an exact non-equatorial incline or when carrying a substantial, winged aircraft.
  8. Ah, OK. Still guessing in the dark but the concentration of weight in your rocket might be at the tail. If you know what CoM (Center of Mass) and (Center of Lift) are, then you want to have your CoM ahead of your CoL. CoL generally refers to wing lift, but there's a center of pressure, I think that covers all kinds. If you're fuzzy on what they are, read up on them when you can. Perth, Australia Now my bedtime. CIao. P.S. you are on the right track with the canards. You have them in the right place! They're just not powerful enough to do the job. Try bigger fins and work your way up through larger ones as you need.. On some craft, I've had to use spaceplane wings as fins! Just remember bigger fins means more drag, so you want to use the smallest that will reliably do the job. Good luck!
  9. OK, here's the deal. fins, wings, canards generate lift but they also generate drag. the drag is roughly quadratic with speed and quadratic again with angle of attack. that means that if you put a knife edge on your capsule it may have next to no drag to begin with. And you can hold SAS vertical starting from a stable position with very good accuracy. As soon as you attempt the turn, or even just really start to attain rocket-like speed, but especially the turn requires an angle of attack. Once that gets started, it's likely to oscillate as SAS tries to compensate. Once your draggy fin at the nose of the ship catches the air, it will drag the nose into the flip. That's why an arrow has the feathers on the tail. So if I imaging your canard is near the nose, your arrow is going the wrong way. If you've got it nearer the tail, it's not your cause. but if it's at the tail of your first stage, then it's probably still in the top half of your rocket. You really don't want drag at all but it's the price you are paying to get control surfaces to help you aim. So the big question here is "what is your objective in placing the canard?". But let's wait until you get the pictures up and then everyone can discuss this reasonably and offer some better advice than I am doing. Have a good evening.
  10. No. A picture is worth a thousand words...
  11. A couple of observations: pandemics kill a spectacular number of people. it's a tidal wave event. save lives if you can, but expect a distressing number of deaths anyway. be reasonable in what outcome you expect, therefore in what you attempt -- and how you criticize results. in general, if a plan to save one life is to ask 999 people to do a simple chore such as wash their hands properly six times a day and the plan requires full compliance, you can be sure the plan is going to fail. (if it's one component in a much better-conceived strategy, then, sure, go ahead and educate/discuss/ask.) Both of these are very sad to state, but I think they are key to think about.
  12. If that canard (pair?) is situated nearer the nose than the tail, that will likely be your problem... nothing to go on without a picture/schematic though. If you want tail fins on your first stage, then you'll need bigger ones on your second... rough rule. (or else get tricky with the solution.) In the case one has a lot of wing area on the first stage (but this is not not your case), it can be necessary to restrict max speed on lift-off until reaching > ~20km and much thinner air, or staying on a vertical heading longer to get there. A good analogy for a rocket is an arrow: big chunk of heavy metal at the nose and feathers at the tail.
  13. Esteemed @Smokey the Bear, your course of action has been heartily approved by the Supreme Board. A sentiment was expressed that the hue of the 3 colors of badges should show more contrast to distinguish them, if that be possible. Please do feel free to draw on the work of @purpleivan as you see fit and/or call on his help as you need. I think the next step would be to produce Ye Artefacts, as they would be used by Club Members for final ratification and then publication in the OP with instructions and the inevitable regulations. Incidentally, the STS badges in your own signature seem to have 103x105 pixels. Additionally, I've noted lately that Chequers of Orbit Boot Camp (with whom I note you are also familiar) may possibly have awesome expertise in the field of making badges... he might be willing to provide pointers? Thank you once again for your initiative in this important matter.
  14. Not really. My response has been to run clippers over my whole head once a week for a nice uniform finish.
  15. I'm running a Linux Mint Tricia system. KSP v1.7.3.2594 KK v1.7.3.4 KerbinSideRemastered v1.0.1_1.7.3 I get a Base Boss and a KK section in Settings, but no artefacts on Kerbin. KSC is no different, for example. Here's the KSP log showing plenty of chatter from KerbinSideRemastered... https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Bc9FiGwsaUPMJJSw6S4uq6N9a64gzF3r Let me know what else I can provide... Always appreciative of any pointers; thanks in advance!
  16. Thank you. They both loaded. Lots of missing statics, so I'll file a log/report with KerbinSideRemastered... Your help Iisappreciated!
  17. UPDATED: see below. I think this is a Linux/Mono package version problem. I'm guessing Linux isn't supported...? Or else the latest versions of Kerbal-Konstructs and KerbinSideRemastered aren't compatible with KSP v1.7.3? This, from the ModuleManager.log: [LOG 15:24:20.360] Log started at 2020-04-16 15:24:20.360 [EXC 15:24:22.084] Add to mod list threw an exception in loading KerbalKonstructs, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null: System.Reflection.ReflectionTypeLoadException: The classes in the module cannot be loaded. at (wrapper managed-to-native) System.Reflection.Assembly:GetTypes (bool) at System.Reflection.Assembly.GetTypes () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at ModuleManager.ModListGenerator.GetAdditionalModsFromStaticMethods (IBasicLogger logger) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 [EXC 15:24:22.086] Add to mod list threw an exception in loading CustomPreLaunchChecks, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null: System.Reflection.ReflectionTypeLoadException: The classes in the module cannot be loaded. at (wrapper managed-to-native) System.Reflection.Assembly:GetTypes (bool) at System.Reflection.Assembly.GetTypes () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at ModuleManager.ModListGenerator.GetAdditionalModsFromStaticMethods (IBasicLogger logger) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 [EXC 15:24:22.087] Add to mod list threw an exception in loading CorrectCoL, Version=1.6.5.3, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null: System.Reflection.ReflectionTypeLoadException: The classes in the module cannot be loaded. at (wrapper managed-to-native) System.Reflection.Assembly:GetTypes (bool) at System.Reflection.Assembly.GetTypes () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at ModuleManager.ModListGenerator.GetAdditionalModsFromStaticMethods (IBasicLogger logger) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 [EXC 15:24:22.087] Add to mod list threw an exception in loading MiniAVC, Version=1.4.0.2, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null: System.Reflection.ReflectionTypeLoadException: The classes in the module cannot be loaded. at (wrapper managed-to-native) System.Reflection.Assembly:GetTypes (bool) at System.Reflection.Assembly.GetTypes () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at ModuleManager.ModListGenerator.GetAdditionalModsFromStaticMethods (IBasicLogger logger) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 (Strangely, though KSP is running, I can't find any KSP.log anywhere at the moment.) I unpacked CustomPreLaunchChecks, KerbalKonstructs and KerbinSideRemastered into my GameData directory. This may possibly relate to a version of some Mono component installed on my system. I have had a similar issue with CKAN. It could be quite trivial to resolve, if the requirement is known. I currently have (e.g.) libmono-2.0-dev 6.6.0-161-0xamarin7-ubuntu1804b1 installed. Hmm, this explains also why CorrectCol had stopped working for me. OK, pardon me, I don't think this is specifically a Kerbal Konstructs problem at all. If anyone who has run into this and has a solution would like to respond here, though, I'd be appreciative.
  18. Very good question. We do not allow any warp longer than 30 minutes. The belief is that 30 minutes is long enough to do something else interesting. Then we run into the 8GB limit imposed by Mother Nature Board.... Expansion of the Memory Universe... So. It's multi-tasking. Never "one thing". I find, I forget the details of everything that has already been set in motion. When a system is bigger than one human mind, how do you ratchet up to the next gear? I have long held this keen interest in project management. I long ago bought a book by Richard Rhodes, The Making of the Atomic Bomb, because I had read that Project Manhattan was a vast project management problem. The book was very interesting but shed no light at all on how such a vast project may be managed. I'd really like to kill Orbit, especially some days, because it has become such an overwhelming mess, with lots of obsolete equipment to be contemporaneously managed, but I feel that this is actually the exact challenge that KSP intends to present. It's my mess and my responsibility. I find I cannot yield.
  19. We started our current Orbit production world on IRL 2019-01-07, converting to v1.6.1. In that time since, at considerable expense (and risk) , we have upgraded to v1.7.3 and are now at Y2, D226. For most of 2019, IRL time pegged even with KSP time. Lately, we have had to accelerate the warp a little, wholly due to (budget-constrained) RAM limits on Kerbinly activity in the meantime (too many craft). This one shot is the vanguard of 8 ships about to maneuver for final adjustment for Eve. They are just 106d into their journey, but they had to wait 2 years for that window. 4 of the ships are for Eve and a duplicate set for Moho (after refueling). The excitement felt in KSC at this moment is "unbearably indescribable"... We here sometimes feel like simpletons with our modest space program (we are only humble kerbals), since most of our announcements seem like "futzing around in the local system" or "inventing stuff as an excuse for not going somewhere". We've never been out-and-back to the furthest reaches for a simple tourist contract. But that's not so easy -- nor so meaningful -- under our rules limitations. We are playing KASA real-time hard-core. "When we launch, we really have to believe..." This is what Realism feels like, folks: NO warp.
  20. Really great information in the entirety of your note!! ...and inspirational! Thanks for contributing.
  21. Very apt. By the time we figure this out perfectly, we will have gotten some things (badly) wrong anyway. I'll give an example. A side-effect of the panic entailed in a pandemic is the phenomenon of hoarding. (The country I live in has now been credited with the invention of a new emergency, monetary system, called "toilet paper", or TP for short.) So controls have now been applied across the board to prevent hoarding. I went to buy beer recently and I typically buy a carton (24) of 500 ml cans because beer is expensive in this, the nation of the World's Greatest Beer Drinkers. The cans are net cheaper than the 375 ml bottles. (Paradoxically, we have the worst domestic beer (think Olympic training), so I buy a German pilsner (that took months to acquire the taste for) and is cheaper than domestic.) The carton I wanted was not in evidence. The anti-hoarding limit on beer is 11.2 liters. So you can no longer buy the quantity of one (1) unit of a standard 12-liter carton that I have been buying, one at a time, as needed, since 2009. If we can get something as simple as this wrong, how are we going to do taking charge of a once-in-a-century event? I'm resigned to the situation but I watch with amusement. Incidentally, there are worse side-effects to panic than hoarding. How do we all like taking a risk with hyper-inflation? Stimulus, anyone?
