I upgraded my computer and KSP loads and runs so much faster now
xendelaar replied to zit's topic in KSP1 Discussion
that's funny. I went from an I5- 4590- GTX970- SSD - 16 gb DDR3 to an 3700x- RTX2080 super - m.2 SSD - 16 gb DDR4 3200 MHz and hardly noticed any difference in loading times. Perhaps the delta is too small to notice any difference? in any case.. I was a bit underwhelmed.. WOW... never thought about this little trick. which parts did you throw away? I'm afraid that maybe those useless parts come in handy at some point... -
Is KSP DLC Breaking Ground worth the money?
xendelaar replied to Yeet_TheDinosaur's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I think it's a big yes! I also got the making history expansion, but was a bit underwhelmed by it. sure, the new engines are nice! but don't add a lot of new options to the game. -
Brought a floating cottage (with a Kerbal) near the surface of Jool (10km). From there I left the planet again using a floating ascend vehicle that was parked next to it. It was a very challening mission but I had tonnes of fun!

“Story” Rosford just had a splendid vacation in her floating holiday retreat near the “surface” of Jool. The gasses at an altitude of 10km are the perfect remedy for liver spots and stress! Now, her vacation comes to an end and she has to get back home to Kerbin! Luckily she’s got a powerful ascend vehicle to get her of this rock…fart? Below you’ll find a 3 minute long impression of her journey back. Hope you like it! 500 kg "Jetpack"-ride around Kerbin in 7 hours
xendelaar replied to xendelaar's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Sorry for the late reply! I put the craft file on kerbalsx. https://kerbalx.com/Xendelaar/Xendelaar-TinyCopter Please note that it's a petty unbalanced craft and that it will start spinning if you reach high velocities. Duplicating the seat and rtg in radial placement would mitigate the balancing issue but would also increase the mass by 160kg. If you're not flying with mechjeb2 than I highly recommend doing this. If you dont know what I mean, I made a video of a chopper that was really well balanced: Replacing the rtg with a solar panel would shave off an extra 50 kg or so.- 5 replies

Today I circumnavigated Kerbin in 7 hours with this tiny electric helicopter I made. I was going for a jetpack...but eventually it became this. I'm pretty happy with the design. It weighs 480 kgs! I made a small video (3:00) of Jeb using it to fly around the globe. !
-
I’ve flown across many planets in the Kerbol system during the last 3k hours I wasted on this game… yet… I’ve never payed any attention to the planet where it all began! KERBIN! So that’s why I decided to circumnavigate Kerbin for a change :D. To make things a bit more interesting, I was wondering if i would be able to do it with a tiny light weight “Jetpack”! I’ve been playing around a bit and came up with this design. It’s more of a tiny helicopter then a jetpack to be honest. But it’s nice and compact! Here are the key features of the design: Weight: 480 kg (inlcuding lard ass Jeb) Top speed: 175 m/s Max Flying distance: infinite Power consumption: 0.4 u/s Power source: one huge RTG I made a small video (3:00) of Jeb using it to fly around the globe. I flew 4.000 km in 7 hours or so. And with Mechjeb as a flight assisstent, things were pretty manageable ! Hope you boys and girls like it.

I made a Helicopter and circumnavigated Dune. It took me around 8 real life hours hehe. Pretty nice challenge, i must say. I made a video if anybody is interested... if not... that's OK too wow! that's so small! how does it fly? what is its top speed and altitude? very impressive!!

stunning design!

very interesting read!

HOLY FUGS that's a big ship! RIP CPU haha. Awesome mission btw!

Hi folks, I recently decided to do a circumnavigation of Duna by plane or helicopter. After many hours of testing, I finally came up with a compact helicopter that flew pretty darn well! Here are its specs: - Weight: 1.24 tonne - Top speed: ~75 m/s (65 m/s on average) - Kerbal capacity: 2 meat bags - Power consumption: ~2.5 Electrical untis/s - Max air time: infinite - KSP Version: 1.9.1 with breaking ground My goal was to circumnavigate Duna and get as much biome-science as possible. I didn't want to visit every biome, but only land on the ones that were along the path of the circumnavigation. Since Duna's circumference is ~2.000 km and my average speed was around 65 m/s, this mission would take me at least 8,5 hours. I believe I flew over 3.000 km in the end, but I wasn't able to record it properly, so I could be wrong. I made a time-lapse video of the mission. You can check it out in the link below (~7:00). Hope you liked it. Some highlights from the mission:

holy crap what an epic journey!
-
i appreciate the feedback on the video. it was actually just a Hotkey-script that took a snapshot every 30 seconds. I didn't want to record 11 hours of data to my pc for just a single mission. Anywho! I found the solution, thanks to you, @Brikoleur and @AHHans! stacking two motors on top does give some friction losses, which in turn result in a spinning vessel! I countered it by making a Chinook-like helicopter!
-
funny that you mention it, but I already did this on Eve.. it also took me 10 hours (i think). If you're interested: check this link to see the video. (please neglect the crappy and choppy quality) okay.. so I don't know what you mean by trim settings. I will look it up! Thanks thanks! so i'm guessing i'm the one to blame. thanks for the links to your craft! i will check them out later if the "ol' ball and chain" let me
-
Thanks for the tip! it does make sense that there are some friction losses which I have to take into account. I don't mind using reaction wheels btw. in fact, the originol craft has 2 small (not tiny) reaction wheels. it's just that.. the whole craft weighs approximately 1,6 tonnes... when I add 5 large 0,2 tonne reaction wheels, the craft still rotates a little! if i just tap "Q" or "E" the craft spins directly and accordingly, so there is plenty of torque available to stabilize the craft, but apparently SAS doesn't work properly. I tried mechjeb2 autopilot to stabilize the craft but that made things even worse haha I'm planning to circumnavigate Duna and without an extreme stable craft, it will be impossible to complete this mission. My vessels' top speed is currently 60 m/s. it would take me almost 10 real-life hours to fly across the planet. I need a really stable craft so I can go AFK when I feel like it. Else I'll go crazy! Thanks for the reply. the thing is, I added 60% of weight (5x large (0.2 t) reaction wheels on a 1,6 t craft) in the form of reaction wheels to the craft and it still spun around with SAS on. I assumed that this would be enough to stop any craft from spinning.. (the craft is completely (Radial) symmetrical btw.) I could add even more reaction wheels I guess, but i doubt that will solve the problem. the tail rotor idea is brilliant btw! If all other thing fail, I could alway try and look into that! I sounds like a neat puzzle/experiment! Does trimming actually work when you have SAS on? It thought SAS removed the trim when you activate it. did the developers change that?

I've been trying to make a small helicopter using several very cool tutorials I found online. I'm currently experimenting with dual rotor helicopters. I use a second identical yet mirrored rotor, which is attached to a motorless servo, to negate axial torque. The thing is.. the craft will eventually start spinning if I don't use any SAS. If I do use reaction wheels, the rotation almost halts to a NEAR minimum.. but still..the vessel rotates. Like one rotation per minute.. Adding more reaction wheels makes it turn slower but it never stops. this makes flying long distances a pain in the poopenshaft. Is this minimum rotation velocity (with sas ) a common thing? Like, is it a bug? Or is my helicopter design just flawed.

(Sorry if this is posted in the wrong section) I want to circumnavigate a planet with a helicopter. The thing is, it will take about 11 hours in real life and it would be awesome if I could use an autopilot mod (of some sort) that helps keeping a steady altitude and heading.. I know there are many mods out there that help autopiloting planes and I was wondering if they would also work for helicopters. My current iteration flies pretty stable.. but still has the tendency to rotate and wobble a bit if i leave the keyboard for longer periods of times.

Actually.. that's a very good suggestion! It's not that expensive at all! Thanks man. I must say I started with a 1500 euro ($1650 ) budget and ended up with a 2000 euro ($2200) design.. I'm still wondering if should skip the i7 and go for an i5 (9600k) because I'm only using it for gaming.. I'll have to sleep on that :)
-
I was thinking of the 3000 MHz strips (Link). What would you suggest? That means I will buy one in december when red dead redemption 2 joins the pcmasterrace
-
the "s" wasn't meant as plural hehe. It's the RTX 2080 Super. thanks for commenting on the setup. I'm still wondering if i should wait for the next gen GPU's or not..they're being released somewhere next year.. Also the new Icy lake CPU chips are released in 2020, but I believe this is only for laptops... just thinking out loud... I could always replace a gpu with a new one, but replacing the CPU is more difficult since we don't know if we can use the same motherboard or not. Maybe I should buy the new setup when KSP2 comes out...
-
I've been thinking of buying a new game pc.. my current setup is ok (i5 4690 + gtx 970). WHat would you guys do: Wait until the next gen RTX GPU's come out next year or go for this setup: Part Item CPU i7-9700k MB Asus PRIME z390 A Atx lga1151 GPU MSI RTX2080s COOLER Be quiet! Dark Rock 4 RAM Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB DDR4 SSD intel 660p 1Tb POWER Fractial design edison M 650 W 80+ Gold CASING Phaneks Enthoo Pro ATX Full tower case In total, this setup is around 2200 euro (including windows 10, installation and assembly ) I mainly use my pc for gaming: KSP, rimworld, witcher 3, fallout, red dead redemption 2, KSP 2 (!).. it would be nice to play games at 60hz and 4k resolution, but I really want to play RDR2 and KSP2 with all sliders to da maxxxxx

Eve Circumnavigation with a propeller plane
xendelaar replied to xendelaar's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
thanks for asking not yet.. i designed a 20 tonnes helicopter/spaceship hybrid for the occasion but somehow lost interest after posting this mission report. maybe I will try it again when I regain the KSP-virus. I'm currently working on other stuff
