  1. Update: I recently purchased a Xeon E3 1246V3 at 3.5 GHz^3.9 GHz. It is replacing my i3 4170, which is entering a Linux box for video conversion.
  2. I quoted micro center prices earlier because they are $50 off newegg prices, and I can ensure their reliability more easily. I also discount the i5 from this now, because the Xeon is an i5 4690k hyper threaded. It's just i7 and Xeon now, and I still lean towards Xeon because of the i7 running hotter(10C according to some sources).
  3. Yeah, I asked because of that clock difference. But is the rendering speed difference hyperthreading or clock speed? I would expect maybe 1/10 more performance proportionally to the Xeon(if clock based), so I will still consider it. Would that same difference occur in video encoding? Also if it matters, I have interest in virtual machines later. Would the i7 hinder that as opposed to the Xeon?
  4. That, and the Xeon Inside sticker. Thanks! I'll make the upgrade likely by the end of either this week or next. Anything else I may need to consider(already using NH-U12S cooler, and have Arctic MX-4)?
  5. I don't have an overclocking motherboard. Should have said that.
  6. Also, in terms of CPUs, I am replacing my i3 4170 in my desktop tower(GTX 970 and 16 GB RAM). Reason being that I need to do CPU related renders more often, and that I cannot run XCOM 2 on Ultra,(my video card and RAM far surpass what I've seen to be the real requirements). So, I am looking at 3 CPUs at the moment. I do live near a MIcro Center(Yonkers, NY). Xeon E3 1241 v3(Hyperthreaded i5 4690k with iGPU removed, almost an i7 4790)($230 at Micro Center) i7 4790k($290 at Micro Center) i5 4690k($200 at Micro Center) All of these options are affordable for me(Micro Center has great prices), and so I would just like recommendations on what to get. I am already somewhat predisposed to the Xeon because of its long term stability while rendering, and being effectively a 4690k turned i7.
  7. Maybe this... So, that has a desktop top end i7 and 980m video card(similar to a desktop 970).
  8. On the SSD portion: I would recommend 3D TLC over MLC. http://www.eetimes.com/author.asp?doc_id=1327904 Also, that cooler makes it overclockable.
  9. Depending on what you consider fairly large, that should do well. Expect around 15 fps in a 1000 part space adventure.(i3 here, i get 10 fps in a 1000 part space adventure).
  10. It is a like button now, in the lower right of a post. You might like to see some of my developments and refinements of Posterus, which is now the Centurion line of ships.
  11. My estimate would be about 2km/s delta vee. Those medium docking ports can handle about 15 ton fighters, and smalls can do maybe 7.5, so you are adding about 1/3 of the current weight to the ship again. 2000 thusly.
  12. No... 6700HQ is only slightly slower, or faster depending on what benchmark you use. I'm talking about Varcolac's machine.
  13. I can push 600 parts on my 4770hq laptop. For quietness, get a noise dampening case and CPU cooler. If you don't want water cooling(you likely don't). You could go for an NH-U14S, for a CPU cooler, and any noise dampening case. Others can suggest more CPU coolers. In your price range, you might want to just go with an i5 6400, put the extra into a Hyper 212 Evo, and get a noise dampening case.
  14. A real shame. The IdeaPad Y700 is perfect for you. But, that iGPU might hold you back a bit. You will encounter CPU problems beforehand though.
  15. That review suggests the superiority of NT-H1. For some odd reason, that is inconsistent with other sites.
  16. What are you using for a PC? I have no issues either.
  17. If you have the cash: Fans under 19dB for the case, a noise silencing case, and a CPU cooler under 19dB. I prefer Noctua for both CPU coolers and fans, but those are numbers you want. Of course for the coolers, look for 50 CFM or more too. Finally. try arctic MX-4. it does perform better.
  18. I have a partlist for him on PCPartpicker.... I just change it. If either of you want a link, or if he has a newegg shopping list then that helps.

  20. That GPU may very well be the loudest part, coupled with the HDD. Not many quieter options though.
  21. Then with the noise lowering case, noise levels should be very low to inaudible. I use louder and smaller fans, with a slower CPU that makes less heat and a non-noise silencing case. The machine is inaudible unless the CPU is under full load(i3 4170).
  22. The RAM will not be interfered with. Just " use the other available PCI-E slot(s) for your video card(s) or turn the cooler by 90°. " Full compatibility list here(motherboard):GA-Z170MX Gaming 5 Compatibility Noctua(BOOKMARK THIS) The RAM won't be protruded over, but you will need to rotate the cooler so that you can SLI in future. Or use the other slot. How far away will this computer sit from you? If I know that, I can do a noise estimate for you.
  23. Yeah, but a higher pixel density will never look worse. So, 25" should reasonably be fine. Also, what is your price range? I see the differences between 1440p and 1080p every day, and the 1440p does look clearly better(explaining my clearly slanted opinion).
  24. Fry's has quite a few nice machines. Look for a GTX 980 and i5 rig at least to test with(AMD alternatives are r9 390 and fx 8350).
