Surprisingly, I do somewhat agree with this. While Squad have been promoting this more than most other updates, the community have also exploded and pushed the news in a similar fashion to the events of the "big bang". I do think it has been a little more publicised though, maybe because it's a NASA collaboration. After all, it is supposed to raise awareness of the dangers and possibilities of an asteroid impacting Earth, as well as their importance in space exploration and scientific analysis.

Ah, I see. I didn't mean hype to be a negative thing, I meant it as promotion. I didn't realise that hype was actually referring negatively to such things. I agree that they should tell us about some stuff that was said at SXSW, though. And maybe a little more on what can be done thanks to Unity 5. Sorry if I'm not replying to your comments, they're being posted faster than I can respond!

While I don't want spoilers, I haven't been avoiding the threads. Hype is just too much for me to avoid them, even though I know that I'll only be less excited when the update actually comes out than I would if I'd have just left some things unspoiled. While I do agree with this, I also think that they should still have had some hype when they felt ready to do so, just not as much as there was. When it gets down to polishing off the specks, that's when all the hype should start.

I agree that the marathon should have been done on the release day instead of being over a week before. Even better, it should have been one 24 hour marathon and at the end of it the update could be released. I'm fine with the waiting part, but the stream just came too soon. There's also a few too many spoilers for me, which is why my I selected the 7/8 option in the poll. Sure, give us spoilers, I love that, but don't tell us everything that's going to be in the update. I like trying to figure out the new stuff and seeing something that I didn't know was going to be added and getting all excited. There's been a little bit of over-hyping here. There is a Devblog that the team run, I'm not sure if you're aware of it. Every Tuesday they give us an update of what's been happening (Devnote Tuesday).

I've noticed that some people around the forums are totally against the idea of hyping up an update as massively as Squad have with this one without releasing it shortly after. I'd like to see the wider opinion on this matter. As we all know by now 0.23.5 and 0.24 are coming soonâ„¢ and Squad have really been publicising it - 24 hours of Stream time dedicated to showing the update, public gatherings and conferences at events, posts left right and center about the features and improvements that have been added - and it's got me really excited for the update. Usually, however, Squad tend to keep this things a little less explosive; Information about updates is generally kept somewhat hush-hush and is not overly hyped by the developers and the media group. Sure, some upcoming aspects of the game are unveiled, but we don't tend to get as every little detail as we have here. On one hand, some people see this as a great thing: it lets us know that this huge amount of stuff is coming, and fast. On the other hand, others see this as a bad thing: all the new features are being spoiler for us, the air of adventuring a new and mysterious update has been stripped from us because of unavoidable spoilers about what's coming. For some, the hype has worn off - the game seemed so close to being finished and yet it still isn't released. I'm sure that we all appreciate the immense effort that Squad go to for us to have a stable and enjoyable game, and being against the whole idea of hyping an update as far behind its release date as this update has been doesn't mean that you're against the development team. So where do you stand on the matter? Are you pro-hype or pro-adventure, pro-anticipation or pro-surprise?

I see now what you mean. That would be pretty useful, actually. I'm all for it now! -
I plan to do this when 0.24 is released. The plan is to use ion engines to power it with solar panels and a metric kerbtonne of batteries, slap it in an orbit, and whack it back down onto the runway. I'd day it'll be done with less force than is inferred here, but I can't guarantee that...

Been there, done that. Entirely by accident, too. My space station core consisted of 4 docking ports, a large RCS tank, solar panels, a Cupola module, 16 RCS blocks, and last but by far not least: a lab module. I had no rockomax parts, but persevered anyway. I got this huge hunk of metal to the edge of the atmosphere, but ran out of fuel. In panic, and regretting not putting parachutes on, I activated RCS and got my apoapsis to 70km with a periapsis of 68km (my current altitude). I waited out the long drift to 70KM, where I got it up to a 120km stable orbit where it currently remains. This is my best recovery of a failed mission to date.

Thinner and thicker atmospheres
Shna_na replied to NERVAfan's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Bear in mind the following facts for contrast: On Earth, 3 parachutes are usually used to safely land a command module. In KSP that number is one parachute. This, to me, says that KSP's atmosphere is more effective than in real life. Therefore 5 atm is probably somewhere a lot higher. Either way, Venus' atmospheric pressure is enough to crush a craft, and Mars' atmosphere makes parachutes near-redundant. KSP is a game, with some simulation thrown in there, and having atmospheres like this would give it an even steeper learning curve and an even higher difficulty. Sure, SQUAD does try to make the game realistic where it still makes the game fun to play, but they realise that sometimes realism just makes things a task. I'd like the current atmospheres to remain as they are. -
Multi Monitor Support
Shna_na replied to Duxwing's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
The issue with this is the GUI. While it's a good GUI and I have nothing against it whatsoever, it would be impossible to use with an even number of monitors. One half of the navball would be on one monitor and the other half on the other monitor. And the altitude scale would also be very difficult to read. Then there's construction - it starts in the middle of the screen. The whole thing would just be split. An no matter what camera you use, the craft would be in half when flying it unless you do the whole middle-click and drag thing. As much as I think it would be great with an odd number of monitors (say, for example, 3 or 5), an even number of monitors would kind of screw you over a little and probably get frustrating. -
Granted, it escapes and tries to cross a road... You fill in the gaps. I wish Raedwulf would upload Turbo Dismount more often.

ensure "Once in space there was a pirate named BaconMaster McShnazzlehauffer who went over to NGC 7032, where he attached twenty large koalas to his pendulous nose with eighteen staples/apples from Dres. However/ unfortunately, he stepped on luminous frogs. Thus, he squelched to eat - the koalas drank bleach. This killed several hamsters which were on top of the sun. Yes, but all the Ikes crush you after falling from Duna orbit somehow and multiplying via planetary mitosis somehow. Would a Nokia survive a meteor impact? -

KSP has taught me a lot. And boy do I mean a lot. I don't even think I can list what it's taught me, whether it's directly or indirectly. For example, it's taught me not only about the physics and calculations behind space travel, but also how to research properly. Possibly as importantly, it's taught me how to read and use those little formulas in physics (such as gravitational constant etc.), how something acts relative to its centre of gravity/lift, etc.. Indirectly, for example through Scott Manley, it's taught me about Greek mythology, life in space, orbital mechanics, how to edit save files (for a good cause, of course, no cheating here). Through KurtJMac I've learnt about constellations, geosynchronous orbits, etc. So tell me, how do you rate Kerbal Space Program's educational value and its uses in any kind of situation? Has it made things easier for you to understand in everyday life? What's the strangest/most unexpected thing you learned about through KSP either directly or indirectly?

I started playing when I was 13. I'm 16 in a matter of weeks and still going strong. Definitely helped out in physics, apparently saying that "the moon is in an inclined orbit" to explain why we don't have an eclipse every month is as far as space-related physics goes in secondary education. Well, there's celestial domes, but other than that... A little disappointing. Anyway, back to the point at hand, I'd say it's a game for anyone. And I mean anyone. My 10 year old cousin? Loves it. My 34 year old uncle? Loves it (he plans to get it when he once again buys a PC). My 45 year old parents? Baffled by it, but they haven't played it yet... I'll get back to you on that! So yeah, long story short, even just in my family alone there's an age range of 24 years between the oldest and youngest KSP fan. That, to me, suggests that it's a game for all ages. Then you also have to consider the youtube videos on it: I believe it was TryDyingToLive who did a video or two where his dad (we'll assume aged 50 for argument's sake) played the game.

Because they have shutters over their eyes that block out colour. You can help them out by opening these blinds, though. Why doesn't Google's dictionary have an option to correct in English (the proper one)? -
"The payload just snapped off! You know what, I'll just push it into orbit and rendezvous with the space station anyway." - Scott Kerman (and he succeeded).

This is a great idea, but you need to remember that it will not only rotate, but also pivot, meaning that while it will spin it will also turn wildly out of control. Do you understand what I mean? It's difficult to explain. In any case, if you can combat this, you're sorted.

KSP in "ciel et espace"( a french magazine on astronomy)!
Shna_na replied to goldenpeach's topic in KSP1 Discussion
This is great! I always like seeing KSP cropping up quirky little places like this. Gonna visit the local media center during an upcoming holiday and see if they've got it there to my knowledge, they've got everything there. I'll post an image of it somewhere if it is there - probably in a blog somewhere. Keep your eyes peeled!
