The key argument: "Right now a few dozens of scientists are studying modified gravity, whereas several thousand are looking for particle dark matter. Perhaps modified gravity is wrong, but perhaps the scientific community is not putting in a good faith effort to know for sure. The universe has had a habit of surprising us; we should be prepared to greet what future data reveal with open minds. " Overall - she points out that while DM is good at predicting some things... so too are variants on Modified Gravity (not exactly MOND, but other theories; MG predicts galaxy actions very well but lags or is silent on some of the larger structures -whereas DM has to be tweaked (if not bent out of proportion) to match the observations of galaxies, but does well at the cluster and supergroup scale. An interesting bit from the video; she quips 'MG Predicts, DM accommodates." The math for MG is simple - but to do the DM calculations takes a very highly 'optimized' run on a supercomputer simulation that may take weeks to give the same result. I'll leave the reader with this: Scientists often claim the Bullet Cluster is evidence for particle dark matter. Because such particles would interact less than normal matter, the collision would have allowed the clusters’ dark matter clouds to pass one another while the visible mass interacted with itself and lagged behind. This story matches what we observe, but it is crudely oversimplified. In modified gravity, too, the point where gravitational attraction focuses can be displaced from the normal mass. This can occur because all forces, including gravity, are thought to be transmitted by a special type of particle. These particles have their own dynamical laws to fulfill. When modified gravity takes into account potential repercussions from these carrier particles, it can also predict what we see in the Bullet Cluster. More important, this cluster is an extreme event and a statistical outlier. Its mere existence is difficult to explain both with particle dark matter and with modified gravity. Using it as evidence for or against either approach is an exercise in confirming our own biases. Is Dark Matter Real? - Scientific American

In the video she admits the title was suggested by the editor of SciAm. So I went hunting for it. Here's the link (I've just started to read it): Is Dark Matter Real? - Scientific American The editorial blurb: " Scientists have long assumed that some invisible “dark matter” particles must accompany the normal matter in the universe to explain how stars orbit in galaxies and how galaxies orbit in clusters. An alternative idea that there is no extra matter and that our equations of gravity need updating has received much less attention. But numerous experiments have failed to find evidence for dark matter particles, and the possibility remains that gravity must be modified. Lately, in fact, some astrophysical evidence, such as recent observations of gravitation in galaxies, favors modified gravity theories over dark matter. It is time that physicists let go of their prejudices and reexamined this underdog idea."

We are going from above 40 degrees to below 4 degrees in a matter of hours. Already one person dead from exposure. First time since 2015 with wind chill down to - 25. Winter Storm advisory/watch/warning... Whatever. It's cold. Dangerous cold. ... I blame Canada.

KSP2 Hype Train Thread
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Whirligig Girl's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
Nothing - merely attributing my grumpy to being old. Truth is that I'm not at all interested in being on social media - which is a 'me' thing. But I do think it is valid to ask the devs to put media about the game in the place where people who are interested in the game don't have to go to another site to try and find it. @Ghostii_Space can very easily start a thread that collects and imbeds these shorts so those of us here can find them. As is it seems they are released into the wild on either Tik-Spy or Facestealyourinfogram and we have to hope someone else links it. Why not the communications person? Release wherever and imbed in a forum post. Hype activated. -

Someone isn't feeling the Christmas Spirit! I don't know about you... But where I live it's beginning to look a lot like global warming is actually climate is not weather and local variations like bomb cyclones are natural part of the cycle Christmas! -
For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Okay I'm on my second read through... And thanks! One of the things I love about this board - details! Still juggling. When I've had a chance to think about everything I'll ask for more - but, again, thank you and the others who have taken the time to reply to what I thought was a 'quick question' -

Yeah - it's actually frustrating that the Communication Team is doing this. @Ghostii_Space Would be nice if you imbed the videos for us in a forum thread. Not everyone here is under 35. (Grumbles into grizzled beard) Durn kids! -
I think there is a short segment in Nate's EA announcement about it. From what I remember he said something to the effect that once you build the outpost (resource extraction) and drive the route you can automate it. Nothing detailed, however. He did talk about sharing resources between SOIs and even star systems. Again, no detail - all this is way down the road. Anyone who remembers better, please correct me. The way Satisfactory does it is that the player drops waypoints automatically as they drive a route. Represented by numerous directional triangles that you can see with a toggle (not unlike the Dino pathing visible in HzD). Because the player and vehicle are following terrain (and the vehicle has to survive the trip) you can have relative certainty that the ai can run the routes. In Satisfactory, there have been some hilarity involved when a player allows two vehicles paths' to cross.

I was only thinking about Rover ISRU - completely forgot about Rockets. Those will probably 'be on rails' behind the scenes stuff - don't we think? Edit - I mean, I think the player will have to 'set up' a run (presumably not fly and land perfectly). Essentially designate a home port, a cargo, a destination and maybe a stop or two... But once done, 'the system' will work out the details. There may be an animation on the DSN - and maybe the player will even see a ship spawn and fly off if they're looking for it... But once set up the system will keep track of the resource transfer and volume on hand. (Writing this b/c if I have to land a ship anywhere else but 'within 5km of the base' it ain't happening)

This is pretty good - if you have the time and are interested in DM She talks about the findings that support the DM hypothesis and then goes into some of the issues where DM doesn't quite line up (places where DM hypothesis does not reflect observations). There is some discussion of MOND ("we know its wrong") - and seeing as I'm still watching... probably more good stuff.

Developer Insights #17 - Engines Archetypes
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Intercept Games's topic in Dev Diaries
I kind of thought that, too - but then there's the side booster on the one rocket. It's also got a flag, and is highlighted differently from the rocket, also flagged, that it is apparently attached to. Will be interesting to see if that actually makes it into game. -
I'm wondering if they took a note from "Satisfactory" on this: player has to 'record' a route the first time, which sets the vehicle's path, and then choose to automate. Pretty simple from a UI perspective. Don't have any idea how complicated 'under the hood' but it works.

Well [digs through ancient history] my college experience was quite different as a Poly Sci major. Liberal arts and all that. California School. The 80s/90s. However, subsequently I found myself in the military -at, in fact, a place that was once in the Guiness Book as holding the record for the highest concentration of Y chromosomes on the planet - so I can relate. If you are at a 'traditional university' - I'd suggest taking a few 'soft courses' (aka electives) in an area you have interest in as a 'broadening' exercise while you have the opportunity. Don't rush to graduate. You'll actually benefit from 'taking an extra semester for yourself' - in that you get exposure to things that will unexpectedly come in handy down the line. That alone should get you out of the Engineering gender disparity pickle. But don't approach it as a 'must meet girls' semester - actually enjoy the classes. You have plenty of time to get a job and toil for other people who pay you less than you are worth, later. But - again, what I found that finally worked for me wasn't looking. While in Service, I found myself looking for, but meeting women who had not achieved my level of education and who had different experiences, expectations, and goals. In other words - while looking - I wasn't finding. Circumstances and all that. However, I did maintain contact with my friends - and at some point I got invited to a wedding and met 'that someone'. You cannot predict that. But if the topic is just dating? Be open. Be honest. Be confident... and be patient. ... If I can lay one thing out: I cannot stress enough that having women as friends is important. Too often young men find themselves believing some incredible horse pucky about women (and 'what women want'). By having women who you respect and regularly talk to, and whom you treat as friends (not some kind of special unicorn in waiting or some mysterious other you must 'figure out') you discover they're just people. I've seen the kind of crap 'information' that floats around the internet. It's not just wrong, it's mean. Demeaning to both women and the men who think that way. Stay off that crap. This is - like all human interaction - dating is an adventure that you must figure out on your own. There is no recipe. There is no instruction manual. The things that work for one person generally don't in another similar circumstance. Finding the 'right one' is a crap shoot; but until then, casually dating is just fun... as long as you are honest, first with yourself and then also the people who you date. It is, fundamentally, relationship practice. ... Last bit. The Story of Fat Tom [Redacted].

Oh, man... @Snark and @Vanamonde are gonna kill you for confirming internet rumors! Reported. -
The apps (from what I can tell as someone who's been out of the dating pool for decades) are basically for hookups and disappointment. You'd be far better served having women as friends. Being around friends has a tendency to lead to introductions and meet-cutes. People who like you for you will hand wave anything to do with a lack of driving or being on the spectrum. Again - here's a pound of salt for my advice.

Pay attention people! This is the level of detail required when analyzing 15 seconds of video for the important things we can glean about both the upcoming release and whether we can expect further delays! -
Don't. It's a virus, not a sign of moral failure. Here's my second bout: https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/210795-covid-redux/&do=findComment&comment=4202682 Are you referring to a place that is not just 'your own room'? B/c when I had covid we just stayed home and pretty much treated it like a flu.

Careful: Captain @t_vKilljoy inbound with KSP facts proving (and destroying your hopes) that the pool is not for KSP2 Olympic Kerbal Team but instead the already existing Kerbal Morale, Welfare and Recreation facility for the families of Kerbonauts stranded in various orbits by a cruel and uncaring Player-God who flings them willy-nilly about the Kerbolar System. -

Save compatibility and early access
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Robin Patenall's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
I suspect that when the Science / progression mode comes out that we'd have the same issue of KSP with trying to load a pre-made ship into the VAB when certain parts are not yet unlocked. ... I have a pure guess that once science (roadmap) is complete that persistence is more likely than earlier in EA. In fact, I think the first two weeks will be a total dust up of people finding unexpected ways to combine parts with conflict reports coming in fast and furious. Thus if you recreate your Grand Tour craft part by part (presuming they're in the EA Sandbox) in the first two weeks - I suspect that it's chances of surviving an update are worse than one built later. I base this on years of experience in SWAG. -

There is a helipad. That suggests that the robotic parts are still in the game (even if not in the first stage of EA). -
You'd be better off asking people your own age. The mating rituals that worked in the 70s or 90s or whatever are likely inapplicable today. Although - I can give you a classic. It is literally the best pick up line of all time. ... See someone you like. Make eye contact with them. And say the following: "Hi!"
