totm june 2018 Work-in-Progress [WIP] Design Thread
PointySideUp replied to GusTurbo's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I've been playing with vehicles at Eve and I've got a few winners! The rover chassis is pretty resistant to flipping (it tends to flat spin) and pretty fast (75 burst, 50 cruise)when "skating" using diff steering on the huge wheels. The Eve lifter is an over-engineered design that can actually survive some damage on ascent and still have enough dV to get the job done. My latest test cycle of rover and lifter design, drop, and return to orbit went so well I started the final burn on the mid stage boosters and finished with fuel in the drop tanks.. I'm using HyperEdit from pad to Eve orbit, but I'm really pleased how both of these turned out! Album https://imgur.com/a/YhVpOWP -

Single Launch All in One Duna base concept with 2 Rovers and powered gliders -
Modular interplanetary ship exchange
PointySideUp replied to maallaard's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I've been working on some modular ship pieces for a while, with a couple of different nuclear tugs that pull modular fuel and ore tanks. I also have a few different orbital station and surface base modules that can be tugged around and deployed. -

I've been working away at some new protypes, a medium-lift SSTO, a new Mun lander, and an exploration base. The base can land at Duna and juuuust barely make orbit again. -

Yo Dawg, I heard you like Ion craft, so I put an Ion craft in an Ion craft -
By request, I have uploaded my large fuel depot/refinery SunBurst Station. It is pretty mobile with it's own Vector and Dart engines, and can fairly easily be brought out of Kerbin SOI by towing it with a tug while pushing with it's own engines (thrust lowered). https://kerbalx.com/PointySideUp/SunBurst-Station I have also released the Mun Raider light cruiser with its Mun Mite lander and small relay sat array. It has ~5000 dV in orbit and a mobile lab, no refinery equipment to save some weight. The Mun Mite is rated for Duna landing and return, made easier by using it's EDL helpers in the Raider's side bay. Dock the mite to the EDL module, and use it's parachute and small fuel reserve to do a semi-powered landing. When returning to orbit, the Mite should use the remaining fuel then jettison the EDL module. https://kerbalx.com/PointySideUp/Mun-Raider Rounding out the package is my Mun Fueler refueling system, capable of refueling the Mite, Kricket, and Ant landers while on the surface, or a ship or station back up in orbit. Launched separately and tugged to far-flung destinations with any of my large nuke-drive equipped tugs, cruisers, or frigates. https://kerbalx.com/PointySideUp/Mun-Fueler

Wow, flashback to an awesome mission led by @Rune Thanks to his awesome craft with power and efficiency, and his skilled guidance, I performed my first gravity burn and Tylo landing last spring break! https://kerbalx.com/Rune/SSTO-Mk-LXXX-Arrow -
Stryker and Sidekick lunar VTOL craft
PointySideUp replied to Jett_Quasar's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Sadly, I seem to have lost most everything from that old 1.05(?) folder with the SKAT drive craft. The Bulldog and a few others on a Google drive are all I have left from that era. I may toy around with a rebuild, it never flew very well anyway -

Avenger and Valkyrie Mini crew shuttles
PointySideUp replied to PointySideUp's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Thanks guys, glad you are enjoying them! -
I've launched 2 more mini crew spaceplanes, the Avenger and Valkyrie mini shuttles! Both use a Terrier and 2 Junos for flight and have ~1600 dV and 50 parts in orbit. https://kerbalx.com/PointySideUp/Avenger-Mini-Shuttle https://imgur.com/a/KulPT https://kerbalx.com/PointySideUp/Valkyrie-Shuttle https://imgur.com/a/pLh1H

Kricket and Proton mini shuttles
PointySideUp replied to PointySideUp's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Thanks for the kind words @Dafni I had enjoyed making and flying the Proton and a few others enough that I decided to release a couple of them. I may have a few others to polish up an release later -
I released two new mini shuttles, Kricket and Proton Kricket Mini Shuttle 51 parts, rocket and jet powered for easier landings https://kerbalx.com/PointySideUp/Kricket-Mini-Shuttle Proton Mini Shuttle The Proton shuttle is a sleek, small 1 seat shuttle, only 28 parts, 2442 dV https://kerbalx.com/PointySideUp/Proton-Mini-Shuttle Albums http://imgur.com/a/m8qHS http://imgur.com/a/fMsyj

I did a complete rebuild of my initial Ant Carrier prototype in 1.2, making it a bit larger and more useful. Now equipped with 2 Labs, 4 Ant landers, claws and scanners in underside bays, and the addition of a hidden sample return capsule -
My first landing with the refining modules was much more conventional, using the VTOL landing engines. I decided to try the unconventional arrangements after realizing not everything would fit in the Orca's bays upon return to orbit. It worked out OK, but the Orca was pretty low on dV after landing.

I performed a few landings and assembled a @Rune Base in a Box on a nice flat, ore rich spot in the Highlands of Duna. The base completes phase 1 of infrastructure building in orbit and the surface of both Duna and Ike. Small album: https://imgur.com/a/KXEy4

I have several of these bases deployed, and especially with something Orca-sized docked, they like to jitter or "rear up" and slam the base on load or approach. I don't usually get the effect with my Mk2 based crew shuttles docked, but have a few times. Another workaround is to enable Joints/Damage cheats from the cheat menu as you load the base or come within ~2km of it. It stops things from exploding, then you just turn it back off.. no hassle. None of mine have ever made a twisted mess of themselves like that though
