totm june 2018 Work-in-Progress [WIP] Design Thread

Getting close to finishing the next strange design, Von Brawny! Another huge science cruiser with part of a VonBraun ring in it. -
Gilly Base Flotation finished
-
Two small blue decouplers and a few struts hold the crew cabin/drone core to the rest of the ship on each end. Disable staging/Enable crossfeed and bind the decouplers to the "Abort" action group. Then just offset everything back together smooth
-
I love my SRB assisted shuttles! Cheap, quick to orbit, and they can land or drift down with emergency 'chutes if necessary
-
I'm thinking an Orca would do the job, I really liked the old CRADLES system too
-
I had been launching like crazy for an upcoming Eve transfer window, and last night and today I completed most of the mission objectives. I launched (and refueled) a Science Smasher with a few ion scooters, a refueling ring station {and tanker drone}, and a @Rune Base In A Box (and an ore scanner probe). The Science Smasher dropped an ion scooter for a surface rescue, then "landed" successfully at Gilly to refuel and grab science. The Base In A Box landed safe enough in the microgravity using only my Nuke Tug Bus, but I'll need to revert and take the base pieces out and attach them one by one with a tug so they don't all float off

Beriev Be-200ChS Goliath Seaplane
PointySideUp replied to Speeding Mullet's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I threw a BZT Speeder in the bay and took off for some islands. Neat SeaPlane! -
I checked out several of these lifters today, pretty nice! I like the 9K and ended up making a few changes for stability. I added a total of 5 struts hidden inside the tanks and reduced the gimbaling of the vectors to 50% outside and 25% for the central. I also added 4 canards at the bottom for a bit more control and disabled crossfeed on the top Sr port. I resaved it as 9K+ and will keep using it!

Besides huge cruisers, I've been obsessed with SRB assisted shuttles lately, here are a few designs. The small one is the workhorse, but I have two other medium shuttles, one a 6 seat. They all have an optional abort with 'chutes for the cabin. Also trying out a refueling shuttle. They don't SSTO, and need to refuel at a station, but they're cheap and fun to fly! -

I had success with the new base at Minmus, with a few Kraken moments as well. After assembling the base, docking the Orca would make the whole base rear up and bodyslam the already fraglie landing legs My rover wheels show blocked, but the base construction was easy enough in low grav. Also, when landing with a crew transfer ship the wings would 'splode off of the Orca! I had to enable unbreakable joints to land near it, not sure what's up with that. Overall, with my Kraken attacks aside, nice base update! Edit: I have since landed several times with no issues

Thank you! The front end came together nicely, but I was stuck for a while on the rest. The first design had droppable tanks where the side nacelles are now, glad you like it! Thank you for the feedback, I noticed something similar with the fuel routing today and have updated the file on KerbalX. My normal launch for the Nuke Tug Bus is to rotate soon off the pad, then immediately tilt about ~15° slowly increasing the gravity turn until I am at 45° by ~20,000. My usual target AP is ~90K where I have a station. Fuel for the boosters should run out when you are finishing the circularization burn or just dump them when PE is ~68K for a debris free launch.

Amazing creations! It seems you may have used every available panel at KSC for some of those ships!
-
Cool islands pack @castille7! Now I just need a fancy drink with 3 umbrellas and I'm all set!

Base in a Box 1.1 heading to Minmus, thanks for the update Rune!

Several new ships added, my first 1.1 crafts, enjoy! The Science Smasher! This large VTOL landing science cruiser makes orbit with ~2000 dV, enough to get to Minmus for refueling. Plenty of room for your most sciency Kerbals. https://kerbalx.com/PointySideUp/Science-Smasher ScienceLab DeLuxe A sleek little mobile science station with all of the deluxe features and bristling with science instruments! Two fully outfitted probes rated for Duna and Eve landings, and two "Little Landers" tested capable of up to a Duna landing and return. https://kerbalx.com/PointySideUp/ScienceLab-DeLuxe Nuke Tug Bus Heavily inspired by recent efforts by @Rune and @Cupcake... this is my version of a nuclear powered station/base tug https://kerbalx.com/PointySideUp/Nuke-Tug-Bus

I'm close to finishing my next command ship, the Science Smasher It makes orbit, but is a bit low on dV to make it to Minmus for refueling, I've also added some stageable control surfaces to make it handle better in atmo. Released! https://kerbalx.com/PointySideUp/Science-Smasher -
SPACE STATIONS! Post your pictures here
PointySideUp replied to tsunam1's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I sent this octagonal core station up in one piece and use it as an LKO fuel stop to refuel shuttles for crew rotation and missions around Kerbin. I have a ship that brings ore from Minmus to keep the fuel flowing. -

I thought I had things all worked out, but I guess my Duna little lander is still a WIP. It lands OK, but doesn't have enough oomph to lift off again.. It works fine on Ike, nothing moar boosters won't fix! -
Last night and today I sent a small fleet to Duna after working on a fresh 1.1 career save. I sent a command ship, a science ship, a refueling tanker, and a few assorted landers and probes. The mission was mostly routine, I gathered more than enough science to fill the lab several times and finish my tech tree without blowing anything up or summoning the Kraken! Landing at Duna in my prototype small lander went well, but with only 0.7 twr on the surface I couldn't take off again. Will need to revise the design. I reverted and continued on to Ike to complete a few contracts and grab a surface sample and several readings for the lab. Great lag free, crash free day in KSP 1.1.1!
