Doing It Constellation Style
Kerbolitto replied to septemberWaves's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I've finally built all the stuff to complete 4-Mun Base, just to be sure, Kerbals have to return in orbit using the Mun Ascent Vehicle from Munar Sortie to dock on Orion ? I have to capture using Altair own propulsion ? Also there's a little mistake in the description, it is required to get room for 3 kerbals (stock) but the rover has to carry 4 :p I can use OrionEXT to get 4 on the Mun if needed, with a larger MAV -

@septemberWaves Hey ! Is it possible that I design a new Altair to build the second Mun base or do I have to keep the same one ? I'll get into trouble to land the heaviest modules with the first iteration ! -
Thanks, totally forgot about this challenge ! I got 2 planes non reviewed yet, a regionnal and jumbo passenger from May

Thank you It was pure luck actually, I did not quickload anything to modify the departure time or else, and the orbit I chose was a bit unusual (Pe around Mun was very low for a free return trajectory). That's why I aimed at 42-43k when returning to Kerbin, so I knew I could glide at least 2 times due to the relatively low drag of the shuttle, or just pitch hard if needed (thanks to a lot of elevator power!) I'll change my future reports to hide more pics, even if I really like showing beauty screenshots without interface for everyone to see ! :p

STS 5T As you'll see below, I flew the shuttle directly after capturing & touching down on the Mun, just in case I'd have to use a small correction to land on a runway. Turns out I did not have to touch anything between LKO and returning in the atmosphere to land almost directly on the KSC ! Part 1 : Launchpad, LKO, Mun injection Part 2 : Capturing Mun-Module around the Mun and landing ! Part 3 : Shuttle's return to Kerbin, capturing and landing during the same pass I pitched down too hard so I landed on the hill in front of KSC, just had to let it roll a bit to stop in front of the SPH ! Part 4 : Mun activities ! Part 5 : Leaving Mun to crash land on Kerbin again

Glad to see you back, and thank you . Back then I used lots of fins because I wanted to land the 2 ships together despite their weight difference so it just helped control even if it was overpowered. I'll probably take a shot at the following missions -

I don't know if you can use jets on special missions like STS Abort or STS Apollo crossover, which are by design precision landing missions requiring forward thinking. The only time I really needed them was for Laythe SSTO Shuttle but maybe michal should clarify if they're allowed in Kerbin's atmosphere?

STS-4T Skylab (second part) This part is shorter than the first, you already saw my method of moving stuff around Skylab and there's not much happenning ! Part 1 : Launch and encounter with Skylab Part 2 : Docking, deploying new modules This is the hab module, consisting of 2x2 Mk2 fuselage You can see the 3 new cre above the antennas ! Part 3 : Deorbiting the shuttle

STS-4T Skylab Mission Okay so finally, I finished my attempt at STS Skylab, feels like its been a very long time since I posted something .... : / Part 1 : Launchpad and encounter with Skylab Part 2 : Artisan's payload, deorbiting useless stuff & saving the hab-module The big thumper is used as an adaptater to dock the shuttle, below it are 3 tiny pods to deorbit comm-mast and solar array, in the back is a rocket booster consisting of 2 Cheetah with their fuel supply. In the front you may see a very flat RoboTug. Part 3 : Skylab goes to a higher orbit, while the shuttle barely avoid the ground ! I realized too late that the hab module doesn't have a Sr. dock but just a regular one, I hope this doesn't disqualify my entry !
