Flying dutchman replied to Skylon's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I get what you mean it was down to the barge going up and down. F9 landing legs are tougher than i thought! Edit: i thought we were still talking about today's launch. Then i Read the fh thingy. Confusion ensued. -

Kerbal ultralight aircraft race

I am definitly doing this later -
No, too much drag sadly.. off course it is possible for prop Planes going less than 250m/s but when you are trying to go this fast the amount of drag i simply too much.. Btw as i already stated i understand that 480 m/s is not enough. But i thought that before because of An error in my calculations.

you really don't have to get this angry, some people like the challenge. and i thought that you only needed 460m/s (which would be doable) because of a calculation error i'm sorry but it happens.

Not yet but i highly doubt this would give me any advantage over rtg's when you consider the distance.

aaaaand that pretty much ruined it. the problem is that to be able to carry 16 tonnes worth of rtg's (and batteries would weigh even more) i need more wing area which reduces my top speed to just under mach 1. i wonder if the topic starter ( @Mars-Bound Hokie) would allow me to use infinite electricity in light of the extra difficulty i already expercience because of the way i want to complete this challenge.

Did 480 m/s which is enough. It is a son of a b*tch to fly though and i still need to make it self sufficient power wise.. 178 electric charge per second is going to be difficult, i'll probably weld some rtg's together to be able to run in with decent framerate.

I'm trying to do this in a supersonic propeller aircraft. I need a minimum speed of 460 m/s but the best i've been able to do is 360 m/s, Just over mach 1 so wish me luck :p

It could be. It's Just about enough but only Just. Apparently one story is 4.3m so the building would be 129m -

So.. nothing happening with Starship at all? -
If we could somehow build a one tonne 1000mw reactor with a 1000mw laser a lightyear could be traversed in 112 years
-
Wow, so to accelerate 1m/s it would take 10.5 years Or just under 4 days.. really terrible a maths.. What i did (1000mm ÷ 0,003mm) ÷3600÷24 =3.85 days for 1 m/s and that is about 94m/s per year
-
So in theory, if you had a spacecraft that consisted of a 1 metric tonne 1mw nuclear reactor and that was being propelled by a 1mw laser with a thrust of 0.003 newtons, what would be your acceleration in mm/s/s ? I'm terrible at maths
-
if you had a laser pointer in space, would it generate thrust?

So we can only use the engines from some mod.. i'm sorry but that really takes the fun out of it for me. -

I tried a 300 t 5m diameter projectile and collided at 300 m/s. Did not work. -
