For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread
SOXBLOX replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Hamelin... Oh, I get it. -
Cool! Thx for the explanation. I look forward to seeing more of this!

I'll bet seven years.

Once every 36 hours seems to vastly underestimate the engineering difficulties inherent in this project. Also, SS needs infrastructure. That requires some serious Ka-ching!
-
The part about Mercury developing antimatter tech is interesting as well. Also, it seems your ships aren't torchships, right? You said they drift, have hibernation systems, etc. Curious as to why you rejected torchdrive tech...

Sure. Who's paying for it, though? SLS is government funded. As SpaceX fans are so fond of pointing out, Starship isn't.
-
Very interesting! I like the US-China Pact thing. Also, I'd suggest moving the exploration of Ceres closer to the beginning of manned spaceflight in your 'verse.

What about KSP, if KSP 2 comes out?
SOXBLOX replied to SkyBoi77's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
We don't really know what will happen, as pointed out by panda above. Perhaps after the launch of KSP 2 they'll reduce 1's price... As for the cost, remember that this is a one-time purchase. You never have to pay for KSP again, once you download it. I've gotten many hours of enjoyment already, and I'm a relatively new player. -
Haven't seen most of this discussion but I'm gonna say that one SS loss with crew on board, when the loss could have been averted with an LES, would wreck public opinion regarding the vehicle.
-
Yeah, pretty sure Shadowzone had a video on the topic of Starship aborts a while back. I think he said it could just barely get off the pad.
-
Pretty sure it has just enough thrust with all Raptors to barely ascend once fully fueled.

One sentence you could say to annoy an entire fan base?
SOXBLOX replied to Fr8monkey's topic in Forum Games!
The USS Enterprise could one-shot the Death Star. And obviously, the NCC 1701 E was the best Enterprise. Boom! Two fanbases in one post! Do I get extra points? -
[snip] Yes! My own: SpaceX didn't launch the first commercial astronauts. Convair and McDonnell did. It was called Project Mercury.
-
Oh, goodie. The engineering should be fairly trivial, though, for people (Kerbals, rather) who can produce and store large quantities of AM. Don't really know whether I want it in the game regardless.

I do not trust take two with making KSP2
SOXBLOX replied to Probro's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
So many people think that the folks who run corporations are inhuman greedy money-grabbers. The truth is that they're humans, just like the rest of us, and are generally rational individuals. They can't and won't put microtransactions or purchasable funds in the game. Remember, the launch price will be 60 USD. It will work the same way as KSP 1. One purchase does it all. As pointed out above, the worst TTI can do is to do a Stellaris and release a new DLC every other month. Then again, maybe they'll let us down. If so, it would just be a rehash of Disney with Star Wars.- 12 replies

Which theory do you think is likely to be the theory of quantum gravity? Why? I'd love to see some discussion on this topic.

Standard Candles and Expansion - Cosmology question
SOXBLOX replied to JoeSchmuckatelli's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Thanks for pulling all that; can't have been easy! So I think the major problem here is the discrepancy between estimates of H calculated using the Big Bang hypothesis and those using stars and supernovae in our immediate vicinity. It will be much easier to calibrate our standard candles once the Gaia dataset comes out and is analyzed. This will help refine all the expansion rate estimates. I'm strongly betting that the Gaia data will align with the higher "late universe" number. The early universe estimates rely heavily on Lambda-CDM and Big Bang assumptions which are not as solid as observations of nearby galaxies and current processes. -

Very intriguing. Could you point me to the articles, though? I won't know the arguments they make till I read them. -
For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread
SOXBLOX replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Ever tried flying by flapping your arms? I always hate telling someone "no" without giving an alternative, but here, I don't think there is one. There's a difference between a problem with a technically demanding solution and one with no solution at all. As for a material which is resistant to antimatter, remember that AM will annihilate any normal matter it touches. Perhaps some exotic particle could resist annihilation, but it probably wouldn't be stable anyways. Even if there was, there are still more, likely larger, technical difficulties to overcome. -

SOXBLOX replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Yeah, so remember, Marvel is sci-fi. Emphasis on the "fi". As for powering this thing, forget it. Batteries? Absolutely not. Hydrocarbons are one of our densest energy storage techniques, but they wouldn't work. A material "neutral to antimatter" . Has this even been proposed? Seems like a very unlikely entity to me. I'd like to see someone run the numbers on cubic gauche. High energy density and no radiation. Could it work if we handwave the other issues? Also, from an engineering standpoint, there's not even enough room in the suit for a reactor like that. Even if there was, how is the exhaust vented in the hands and feet? Not a lot could withstand that sort of thing. Rocket engines are metal for a reason, and metal is not known for flexibility and comfort. This would be a massive challenge to build. By the time you got done, it would look more like a rocket-propelled helicopter-like machine with a little tiny cockpit somewhere on it. And ramjets. If you're thinking of going hypersonic in this thing, think again. You'd be cooked by air resistance. The SR-71 needed a heavy-duty cooling system for life support. It used the fuel as the heat exchange fluid. If you want cool power armor, just do something more Expanse-style. Less cool rockets, but apparently effective. -
I'll say either fusion or an NSWR. With highly concentrated Uranium salts, of course, because when moar boosters fails, moar nukes has got ur back!

You're a game dev, K^2? Cool! If so, which studio? Also, let me bring this back down here; I think it got lost way up there.
