Sure, wings help in the lower atmosphere, but the higher you go the less lift they generate while still imposing drag. And since KSP get engines have a T/W ratio greater than unity, I'm wondering whether one needs to bother with wings at all. So I made this, but I'm having trouble getting it to orbit. However, that could just be because I generally suck at spaceplanes. So guys who are good with spaceplanes, what do you think? Is this not making it because I'm a bad pilot, or because the concept is flawed? Craft: http://www./download/hgodfxbellctx53/XSSTO.craft

Upload your screenshot to Imgur, then use the BBCode link they provide in your post.

My design philosophy was, "And I am going to KEEP adding landing legs until you stop bouncing into a crash, damn it!"

Besides, ship parts are only fully simulated within a range of 2.25kms of your current POV, so that's as tall as any tower can get. Not to mention that it would be quite a trick simply keeping the thing from collapsing under its own weight. flowen8, what you're suggesting is like a space elevator, which only works if you build it up to the geostationary altitude of the world in question, which for Mun, is more than its ~2200km SOI radius.

I made one a while back. magnemoe, I avoided the destructive jolt by using a drogue chute, since the mass involved is small enough, and drogues open less violently.

Is it bad that I don't like almost all sci-fi movies/ t.v ?
Vanamonde replied to Master_Cheez's topic in The Lounge
The good stuff never gets made into tv shows, and almost never into movies. They're afraid it won't attract enough viewers. Even the best of tv stuff, like Star Trek, would barely qualify as mediocre by the standards of written SF. In other words, you're entirely correct to dislike most "sci fi" shows and movies. -
I think Comedy Central might be the only cable channel that still follows its original genre. Syfy has wrestling, reality/game shows, and drivel like. AMC runs junk that is not classic and often not even American. Bravo is not the best of syndication anymore. A&E is neither artistic nor entertaining. History and History International are mostly reality shows. The only thing you can learn from The Learning Channel is that reality shows suck. And the only reason Discovery even still runs Mythbusters is that its the closest thing to a hit they've ever had. Even flippin' TVLand has given up its retro theme and is making execrable sitcoms of its own. I think it's a local thing, but I find myself watching METV more and more. Bonanza and Emergency may be decades old, but METV is just about the only thing on that isn't centered around vapid wretches shrieking inarticulately at each other.

Is Eeloo's Surface Generally Prone to Clipping Bugs?
Vanamonde replied to ComradeGoat's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Eeloo is all kinds of buggy. Among other things that have happened there, I landed a rover just fine, but when I resumed it later, it was placed under the surface and fell to its demise. -
VAB - How to Place Wheels
Vanamonde replied to zlaxys's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
No magic necessary. I just picked your wheels up from here, and put them back on here. Are you perhaps mistaking the position of the command capsule door to be "up" or "forward," and trying to orient yourself from there? Because up while the ship is flying is the side where the capsule windows are, and forward while driving is the opposite of that. -
Omicron314, that video annoyed me. It sounds to my extremely non-expert ear that they're using a very poor choice of terms, since the guy comes right and says that temperatures CAN NOT hit or go below zero Kelvin. I think a much better term would be reverse temperature or bizarro temperature.

VAB - How to Place Wheels
Vanamonde replied to zlaxys's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
zlaxys, I believe the issue you were having is that the wheels were set at a 45 degree angle to the command pod's orientation, and the game was confused about how to interpret your movement commands. So I rotated the wheel arms to comply with the capsule, and was able to drive your vehicle around with both steering and drive applied in the proper directions. -
What is at 7000 m in Kerbin atmosphere ?
Vanamonde replied to ASnogarD's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I'm not sure exactly what you're describing, but how about rotating the booster mounts so that they fit between the cradle parts, and so could be moved in without hitting the cradle? Or simply most the booster mounts down so that they're below the cradle arms when you shorten their mounting arms? -
"Minus 94," KELVIN?! But for you allergy sufferers, the particulate count is zero.

How long did it take you to dock ...
Vanamonde replied to StainlessSteelRat's topic in KSP1 Discussion
StainlessSteelRat, it may help you to practice at a higher, slower orbit. It takes longer to bring the ships together, but the speeds involved are more manageable. -
What is at 7000 m in Kerbin atmosphere ?
Vanamonde replied to ASnogarD's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Your tanks are placed so far out to the sides that any rotation they may pick up is going to have an awful lot of angular momentum. I suspect that at lower altitudes, the air is thick enough that the canards can counter-act this, but once you get to thinner air, you're left with only pod torque and the ASAS trying to exert control. Replace those long struts with short ones, or even small hardpoints, and I suspect the problem will become much more manageable. -
I'd prefer they kept working on new features and bug fixes. Aspects of the software are going to be revised multiple times as development progresses, and it seems like a waste of time to me to convert, re-convert, and re-re-convert old code every time.

Do you really believe that if you just post this complaint 101 times, it will suddenly convince all the people who didn't buy it the first 100 times you posted it?

1) Struts should automatically vanish when one of the stages they're connecting is ejected. Your situation sounds like a bug, but it might help to see a picture of the ship. 2) Fuel lines will pump fuel on a station or ship or whatever, but only when an engine is firing. To get fuel to flow when engines are not firing, you have to use the right-click menu. 3) The whole crewing system is getting replaced in the next update, but for right now, EVA is the only way to empty a capsule. If a ship has no capsules that currently have any crew members in them, it will be inert, unless you've also installed a probe core. 4) ASAS is currently disproportional to large ships and will cause shaking and the RCS spasms that you've seen. But that is also slated to be reworked in the next update, and shouldn't be a problem much longer. 5) Docking rings can not be used to combine saved ships before launch (I think that's what you're asking). You can use them as connectors, but only if you build the whole thing as a single launch vehicle. After launch, you can combine or separate ships to your heart's content. There is a mod or two that will allow you to place struts on docked ships, but that option does not exist in the stock game. 6) I haven't tried the stock rovers, but you can hang rovers beneath or on the sides of a lander, and a trickier option is to mount it on top and drive it off. I made some examples http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/35916-Small-Medium-and-Large-moon-rovers-from-Yeahletstrythatdyne of the most popular type of rover delivery system, which is called "skycrane." In it, a disposable mini-lander comes close to the surface or actually lands, and then drops the rover.

Unmanned Command Modules
Vanamonde replied to flyingskippy's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I believe that is an aspect of the crew management system that will be introduced SOON. -
Unmanned Command Modules
Vanamonde replied to flyingskippy's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The first capsule you install that CAN have crew WILL have crew, at least until the next update, when that whole system is being reworked. But you can send the guys on EVA and "end flight" them, leaving the ship empty on the pad. -
That looks awesome, but I'm sentimentally attached to the old one I've been playing with for a year. Why can't I have both? Oh, why is life so cruel?!

You need to post 3 more times, and then the forum software will agree to believe you are not a spambot, and grant you permission to do some personalization. Until then, I think the buttons are not even displayed for you.

Are you asking how to build a rocket that can deliver the tanks? This http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/showthread.php/25779-Orbital-refuelling-tanker will deliver a full orange tank to about 350km orbits without using the fuel of the tank itself. It uses a medium docking ring, but you could easily replace that to make it compatible with your station.
