My first helicopter concept
life_on_venus replied to Manurauz42's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Cool! Why not see if you can make a turboprop helicopter? Head over to the forum thread "stock helicopters and turboshafts" and have a look- 12 replies

It would be easier to use CKAN for all your mods, you know

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/u2y748mltga5t4f/AABNZrGFX9IprX3lGaRZKxrAa?dl=0 I included my 1st and 2nd engines. I think "Engine 2 Cart 4" is the most up to date one. I also included two other crafts for your pleasure: "Microplane II" is a small, F-14 like drone fighter aircraft. Looks cool and goes pretty fast. Perfect for buzzing the tower! "Engine car 2 Re-geared" is not my latest turbo-car, but it works fairly well and has a decent lump of torque thanks to the regearing. That one has conventional landing gear for the front wheels I think. Have fun! Ah wait, I typed this all out and then realised you would need the MoarMk1 mod to make it work I'll leave this post here though in case anyone wants to try out the microplane which should be stock. I've tested my engines at both stock and 0.1x drag multiplier

...Oh. I shall experiment. I've been making 10 and 20 Juno turboprops with stayputnik bearings but I can't even get them above 25 m/s on a test cart. Bless me with your knowledge Klond!

Really nice! Would love to see more! So can you just use smooth parts as turbine blades?
-
Yes please do! Especially the big one!

I... What? Could you post pictures so a pleb like me can understand? I've slowed down with this stuff ebcause of schoolwork (and regular work!) but I've advanced the car I was working on a teeny bit. Still not got a working transmission. I tried to make 2 fixed gear ratios with their own clutches, but the clutches didn't work

So if I were to take one of your engines through reentry would it screw with the ignition system??? -

Ah cool. So Azimech, am I correct in saying that the Piston mod uses Infernal Robotics scripts to make its bearings? I'm waiting gosh damnit! -

I'm not sure what you're talking about, we never argue! I'm sure editor extensions includes the no offset limits mod? -
The Great Piston Engine Thread
life_on_venus replied to Azimech's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Yep, we have V engines and Inlines so we could do W engines (of both types) and H engines I suppose. The difficulty with H engines is keeping both crankshafts from slipping at speed. That, and the torque might overpower any clutches we built -

I'll download your V8 sometime and watch as it melts my drivetrains to pieces Seriously though I think that you could mount it transversely. Use a 3:1 gearing or something to connect it to a driveshaft that runs below it, with a wheel on each end. Cheap, powerful drivetrain for an RR layout car. V8 kerbal Porsche anyone? Ooh, on a different note, has anyone got a regular transmission to work yet? I tried building a 2 speed the other day but failed -
Piston Jet Engine (Motor Only)
life_on_venus replied to ZooNamedGames's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I'd like to point out that it is incredibly compact and will (I'm assuming) make a small amount of power if the control surfaces were angled properly. It would run at constant speed. Now what sort of flying vehicle could benefit from a small, constant thrust produced by a small engine... Perhaps one with rotary wings...? /sarc -

Technically my shaft is shaped like an I-Beam xD -

You're right of course, but goddamn it this is 1928, gasoline is free!: http://imgur.com/qrSFzq3 -
Piston Jet Engine (Motor Only)

Hey, glad you could join the League of extraordinary gentlemen! In all seriousness, we post stuff in this thread: I haven't even made a turboshaft engine capable of taking a plane or helicopter off yet! I am working on some cool cars though. Your turboshaft may not be practical for powering an aircraft, but within it you have made a bearing. That's really the first step in anything mechanical in KSP. You've proven to yourself you can make cool stuff and that's great. You could probably use your turboshaft for decoration too. I guess it's probably easier if I tell you about some of the stuff you're gonna find in that thread, and put it all in one place: * Bearings made with wheels are usually a bit temperamental compared to wheelless ones * For wheeled bearings try using spring and damper settings of 2 & 0.7 respectively on your landing gear * To make a wheelless bearing, place a Stayputnik Probe inside of a Structural Fuselage * To make your turboshaft move, put paddles of some kind around the shaft, and use jet engines on the frame of the turboshaft to blow onto the paddles Most importantly, Have Fun! - Venus -
I actually did something similar, with landing gear: http://imgur.com/a/3uBEX Problem is, for some reason my crankshaft won't spin anymore. I did lengthen it to add a bigger turboshaft but it has enough bearings that weight shouldn't be an issue. Maybe it's just KSP and when I restart the game it will work again. The vehicle you see here is V3 and it has a larger turboshaft engine, (tested) larger gear ratio to give more torque, and expanded fuel tanks, because this thing guzzles gas like a Duesenberg and probably weighs about the same too. Eventually I'm hoping I can put a body on it in the style of a Duesy SJ: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duesenberg_Model_J#Supercharged_version_.28SJ.29 http://silodrome.com/duesenberg-sj-convertible-coupe/ That should work out fine anyways I apologise for my 41 part count wheels, I'll probably replace them with 2.5m inline batteries or something not too heavy! EDIT: The steering system I made with the landing gear works well! The legs are there to kinda center it when needed and the gear do a fine job of shoving the front end around. The thing is that when transitioning back from full steering to central, the thing overshoots its turns a bit. Oh, and the steering controls are all binary! Whoops...

https://www.reddit.com/r/KerbalSpaceProgram/comments/5ajchj/i_realise_my_lpost_earlier_today_was_a_bit_low/ So I posted this on Reddit, but it didn't really get viewed by anyone I don't think. It's another car, this one powered by a very small turboprop. It was created after I was building another turbo engine that wasn't powerful enough to get a plane in the air. I made a super simple rolling vehicle with that engine, and then later in the day I purpose-built this engine and drivetrain. It's not really "finished", it's more just a fun craft that uses the drivetrain I made. There have been much more impressive car things made, from Klond and from Azimech, but I had a lot of fun with this thing. Without further ado, some actual info about the machine: Power is provided by a wheelless turboprop, with 2 blowers and 4 blades. It does not spin terribly fast and does not have a great torque radius. Nevertheless, it produces enough torque to set the car in motion with a 1:1 gear ratio. The transmission is a single speed, with a 1:1 gear ratio, and the engine is always engaged with the driving wheels. Because it is a turboprop, there is no need for a clutch when stopping, power is just reduced to 0% and the brakes applied. The vehicle is rear-wheel drive. There's no reverse gear, and the torque provided by the turboprop cannot get the vehicle up the space centre's steep slopes without a runup. The rear wheels are 2.5m in diameter and have many small landing gear around their edges, with the brakes applied to give grip. Taking these brakes off gives the impression of doing massive burnout . The front wheels are just small extendable landing gear to hold the vehicle up and provide steering. I think I might replace them with a set of 2.5m steering wheels. The front wheels have their own suspension built into the landing gear part, but the rear wheels have no suspension. Anyway, that's the fun I've been having recently! Bye!
