Only one question about 0.20 (and 0.21)
SmallChange replied to TheCanadianVendingMachine's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Wow. 10 minutes? Just restarted KSP and timed it, took 36 seconds to the menu screen. That's a clean install running on a SSD, on a newly built computer, though... OP, how long is it taking a vanilla install to load? -
Benefit of Solid Rockets over Liquid
SmallChange replied to Bunzmaster's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I use them as "no though" extra power on my first stage of a lifter, though rarely will I ever start out with plans to incorporate them into a design. If I find my launch vehicle to be a bit more sluggish than I had hoped for, I'll toss a couple on. Also, from a completely roleplay and aesthetic standpoint, their exhaust plumes look cool. There are a couple other benefits though. The thrust to weight of a solid rocket motor right around the time when it's about to burn out is crazy. Also, they have a lower profile than a liquid tank + most engines. Granted, those benefits are pretty small in comparison to the drawback of having no throttle. -
Rewdew2! Don't loose hope! Fortunately, I think your folks are just behind the times. Kind of like someone in the 80's saying you couldn't make a living making stupid little computer games, the person doing the telling is using an obsolete model. Heck, maybe show them this. People are making money, often for stuff their parrent probably told them was a waste of time.

I had never really thought about my usage of the two terms.. I've found I use both. Whenever dealing with something KSP related, I always say Center of Mass. For day to day conversations, if the term were to ever come up, I'm sure I would say Center of Gravity. Not sure why that is...

How many plays "for real - with conscience"?
SmallChange replied to EasyAce's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Man, that would be an awesome mod. No parts, no real function. Just one of these signs up on the wall in the VAB, and have it keep count, and revert to zero each time a Kerbal is killed in action. (I would totally install that, and I'm one of those grumpy vanilla players!) -
As dagothar pointed out, Nixon had a speech ready to go for JUST YOUR scenario! Next time that happens, clear your throat and look somberly at your brother and say: (Substituting the appropriate terms where necessary) "Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace. These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice. These two men are laying down their lives in mankind's most noble goal: the search for truth and understanding. They will be mourned by their families and friends; they will be mourned by their nation; they will be mourned by the people of the world; they will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send two of her sons into the unknown. In their exploration, they stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in their sacrifice, they bind more tightly the brotherhood of man. In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood. Others will follow and surely find their way home. Man's search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts. For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind."

Challenge 18 Orange Tanks to Orbit
SmallChange replied to Bothersome's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Here's an idea for a scoring system: As it was pointed out earler, there is no prohibition against using those tanks, so remaining fuel could be the score. Also, you could do a MJ scoreboard and a total vanilla one. Just a suggestion. -
Quick update on the load problem: I'm up and running. Looks like the problem was the scenario file. The first one I downloaded was only 28.6 Kilobytes. Not sure if it got swapped out, or if something got corrupted somewhere along the way. SuperSeniorComicGuy, seriously, this is awesome. So far, I'm still messing around with Stage 5, but I love it! You put a ton of work in on this, and it's appreciated!

Build a predator Drone that can fly
SmallChange replied to Penguinhero's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Hey Penguinhero, In most cases, a sucessful challenge will have a clearly defined goal, as well as a good scoring metric. [thread=24898]This[/thread] post has some really good pointers on what often turn out to be successful challenges. In my opinion, the main question to ask when making a challenge is "Am I making a game that other folks will have fun playing?" Also, taking a little time and working on the presentation can go a long way. As it's looking right now, you might not get a whole lot of participation, but that's how challenges go sometimes. -
Around Kerbin in under an hour!
SmallChange replied to GangreenEVO's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Hey GangreenEVO Looks like you might be able to make it onto the leaderboard of one of the current challenges! If you haven't yet, please do take a look at the [thread=24898]Challenge Submission Guidelines[/thread] thread. It has some great tips. Since it looks like we have a couple active, nearly identical challenges on this topic, I'm going to close this thread. -
You know, I was totally going to lock this thread, but then I saw the awesome work Swizzlewizzle did! I haven't checked out the Procedural Wing mod, but I like what you've done with it! Chances are, this challenge isn't going to get updated by the OP, but I'll keep an eye on it.

That's a totally do-able project. There are some limitations/problems associated though, like you were saying. Not sure if there are any mods available for this... I tend to play mostly stock. You can easily put 4 24-77s on the end of a large orange tank'd craft and test it out. One thing be be aware of, though, is that you will need to place the engines individually. This is because, if I recall correctly, there isn't a way to select a single item in the action groups if it was placed there using symmetry. Also, when setting up your action groups, opt for toggle instead of having on/off switching. Also, if you want to try to make it even easier to control, you could even try remapping your action group keys onto the WASD, though I haven't tried that.

Least delta v to orbit
SmallChange replied to CrossyCriss's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Hey guys. I'm going to go ahead and lock this thread for the time being because, yeah, it's about 7 odd months old. I doubt the OP will be maintaining the leaderboards or answering any participant questions. Don't fret! Like the competition? Feel free to write up a new one! Also, that would give the opportunity to get the mod restrictions worked out, etc. (Please remember to take a look [thread=24898]here[/thread] if you haven't) -
Had to give my love for the Rockomax 24-77. Yeah, it's ISP is nearly as bad as you can go, but dang if you can beat it's versatility. Want your rover to fly? Here ya go! Crazy lop sided contraption wants to get to space? Let me lend a hand, buddy! Need turbo RCS? Action groups, here I come! For some reason though, I never use the Mark 55. Not sure why.. maybe I find it too powerful for most practical applications as a radial.

For me, it really depends on the context of what I am doing. When I'm in actual mission mode, I never leave a Kerbal behind. I've even got a rescue satellite in orbit with 4 attached command pods with parachutes just in case somebody gets stranded. If a mission goes wrong and someone winds up stuck on another body with no return transportation, that becomes my priority. If I'm just playing around the VAB or doing testing, it's a different story. The carnage is unspeakable.

You Will Not Go To Space Today - Post your fails here!
SmallChange replied to Mastodon's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Not sure what I was doing wrong, bit I did not go to space today.. -
I recently dusted off my old copy of .8.5 just to see the differences. Wow. No map screen, no nothing really. I slapped a rocket together to see if I could get an orbit through guesswork. Somehow, I managed to get a near circular orbit right around 120Km. Not going to chalk that one up to skill, though. I'm well aware that was flat out luck!
