Super Massive "Station" In Orbit

Correct, but the rings of Saturn are made of up millions of tiny objects, where as we're more concerned with a theoretical single object. Edit: Ninja'd -
Super Massive "Station" In Orbit
Greenfire32 replied to Greenfire32's topic in Science & Spaceflight
So as long as there is some kind of "correcting force," this could hypothetically be possible then? An interesting thought about this. If the station were to become tethered to the Earth (like in fig. E), would that cause the Earth's natural rotation to slow down? Similar to how a figure skater extends her arms to slow her rotation down and brings her arms in to speed it back up? Could a station like this, being tethered to the Earth, cause more harm this way? But the difference is that Saturn's Rings and the ISS are relatively small objects that orbit the planet, where as this station would be a single solid object. The basic thought here is whether or not a single object big enough to encompass a planet would even have the possibility of orbiting said planet. Oh I didn't even think of the moon screwing everything up! -
So everyone here (or at least the overwhelming majority) knows that an object in orbit isn't "floating" above the planet, but rather traveling around the planet at the same rate that it's falling toward the it. This is a fairly easy concept to visualize when the object is (relatively) small like a shuttle or a space station. Heck, even the rings of Saturn aren't made of a single object, but many many tiny ones. What if there was a massive ring-shaped "station" in orbit? Would the planet's gravity pull on the ring equally from all sides, keeping it stationary in "orbit" (fig. A)? Would this mean that the "station" wouldn't need any rotation since it's size alone would mean that the planet's gravity just keeps it in place (fig. ? Or would the "station" be so massive that it just rolls over the surface, causing stupid amounts of destruction on the surface (fig. C)? Now the goal here is to avoid massive support beams to hold the ring up (fig. E) and to just have a free-floating ring if possible. Would adding thrusters to generate spin keep it in orbit (fig. D)? Is this even possible? This is just something I thought of while on lunch break. I've got a small rubber band ball and a ring made out of twist-ties on my desk in the office that kind of made me visualize all this. It just kinda sparked my thought process and I figured since I don't really know how this would work, I'd throw it at all of you and see what you say. For the sake of the argument, please assume that mankind has a material strong enough to hold this super-structure together and the resources required to build it in the first place.

it's absolutely worth the asking price of $30 so I'd go for it now. If you're strapped for cash (if $30 is "strapped for cash" you have bigger problems) then I'd wait for the Steam Spring Sale.
-
Isn't heat really just "wasted energy" though? There ought to be way for us to capture that "waste" and re-purpose it for something useful. We just don't know how yet.

Bought it from KSP website and thought about "upgrading" to Steam many times, but for some reason I haven't.

How to dock with other spacecrafts in orbit?
Greenfire32 replied to EpicX rocketry gardens.co's topic in KSP1 Tutorials
Only if it doesn't automagically switch for you -
Laythe. Hands down, no question. Breathable (enough) atmosphere, liquid water & a view that could KILL even the heartless!

Never saw the appeal in the first one. Laughed when the second one came out like an hour later. Cried when the third one came out before the first one.

I'm OK with the bumpy T1 runway, so long as the terrain around it is worse off...which it isn't. So my problem with the T1 runway isn't that it's pretty much how it should be, it's that the area on either side of the runway is MILES better for takeoff and landing. Make the terrain bad enough that a runway is needed or (gasp) add population that would require a runway to avoid slamming into, and the problem more or less evaporates.

what partnerships would you like KSP/SQUAD to make?
Greenfire32 replied to Dimetime35c's topic in KSP1 Discussion
In all seriousness, I would ABSO-FREAKING-LUTELY LOVE a Minecraft/KSP hybrid game. Think all the space travel/orbital mechanics of KSP mixed with the survival/first-person view of Minecraft. And galacticraft isn't even close. -
How to dock with other spacecrafts in orbit?
Greenfire32 replied to EpicX rocketry gardens.co's topic in KSP1 Tutorials
On a 90 degree orbit: 1. Target docking port faces North (red line on nav ball) (make sure you click on "control from here" on the docking port to line it up correctly) 2. Controlled port faces South (180 degrees) (make sure you "control from here" on the docking port again) 3. Kill relative velocity to target. 4. Burn towards target 5. Activate chase cam, position vantage point directly behind controlled port (so you can see the engines) 6. Use RCS keys H, N, I, J, K, L to reposition as needed. 7. GO SLOW! 8. ??? 9. Profit! I also did a sort of "tutorial" kind of on Docking during my last KSP stream that I did. Check my signature for the link if you wish. ----EDIT---- The reason you want the ports facing north and south (on a 90 degree orbit) is because as the two crafts orbit the planet, the locations of the docking ports will "drift" otherwise. Having the ports aligned North and South means they wont "drift" and will be in the same location no matter where at in the orbit they are. Not having the ports aligned this way makes docking about 300 times harder because you're constantly making not only course corrections, but alignment corrections too. On two crafts. At the same time. So do yourself a favor and line those puppies up! -
Honestly? I don't see what the big deal is. 64-bit KSP was a mess on it's best days. This was known all throughout the community and the devs practically put a "use at your own risk" sign on it. In my eyes, if you were still using an incredibly unstable version of KSP, it's your own fault for not using the better, stable, actually working version when the axe came down. Sure, Squad probably should have said, "Heads up. 64-bit KSP is being removed. Plan accordingly." before hand, but in all honesty most people already abandoned it. What I think we're hearing and seeing now is what I like to call "the vocal minority." /2cents

I'll miss them in the sense that they'll essentially become a part of history that won't physically exist anymore. In museums you'll hear, "And this is a replica of the Hubble telescope," instead of actually getting to see the real deal. THAT's what I'll miss about them.

I want satellites to have a purpose. I want rovers and bases to have a purpose. I want Kerbin to be populated. I want water that behaves like 2 hydrogen atoms bonded with a single oxygen atom does. I want bugfixes, optimizations, better textures, clouds (weather maybe), crater impacts and dust kick-up. I guess, in the end, all I really want are the things that should be there already.
-
ah. I'll admit, I didn't think of that.
-
Death to 64-bit KSP! Sorry. I've got my torch and pitchfork out already. It makes me say some...crazy...things.
-
It will forever be known as the ultra-rare version that sells for $28,595,465 on ebay to some collector who "must have" it.

Half-Life 3 Confirmed? Am I doing this right?
-
This is quite possibly the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.... I love it!
-
That's because anyone who has enough mods installed to warrant needing 64-bit has already discovered that 64-bit can't handle even just the stock game. XD

[Idea] Kerbal Kids, expanded Colonies, and more
Greenfire32 replied to LadyAthena's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
I wouldn't mind a colony-building scene (similar to the VAB and SPH scenes) that would function a lot like the game "Banished" in KSP. -
...how? I'm assuming you changed the language by accident? Only other thing I can think of would be if you downloaded it from somewhere other than the official website which is odd...because OBS is 100% free so... Anyway, I'd just uninstall/reinstall as it will probably be easier than Randox's method. Though that should work too.

Easter weekend. Lots of businesses are closed on Friday and Monday. I wouldn't put too much stock into this.
