"I can brake from 190ms in a few seconds, my TWR is really high oh wow thats too fast houston we have a" BOOM

the amount of rubber that gets put on the roads through normal driving (not to mention oil leaks, burnouts etc) would swiftly blacken the road past efficiency.

Hi there! I was thinking the other day about how the ISS orbits very close to the surface of the Earth, and how someone with even a poor telescope should be able to see it easily. I remembered also that the ISS has had astronauts go on EVA numerous times, and began to wonder if anyone has taken a picture of an EVAing astronaut from the surface? Has anyone ever encountered such a photo? And if not, does anyone know when the next EVA is planned?

The first of the different-option sounds. A 'funny' one that didn't turn out quite like I expected. Download here (if you want)

The main benefit is getting a K-Prize! Go backstage with the Kerbettes! Seriously though, it is hard and challenging. When you start to get really good at the game, SSTOs and Eve returners are pretty much the only challenges left..
-
Thanks for that! Updated to Curse, with a MediaFire mirror.

Hi all! Just a notification that I have updated this to run on 0.235. Thanks to virtualgenius for pointing out the error, and the download is LIVE again!

One of the things that broke the game for me is the realisation that the smallest possible rocket in the game: 2 OSCAR-B fuel tanks, an OKTO2, 2 OX-STAT panels, and 2 LF1-R engines, has enough dV (~1800) and thrust to land anywhere except Tylo and Eve. While weighing under 0.3T. Look at how ridiculous this is. It's only issue is that it has trouble out Jool way because the OX-STAT doesn't provide much power at that distance, and at Eeloo it just drains the battery super fast. But, still.. how crazy is that little thing??

Sadly, this is me, pretty much. I have big plans, build big rockets, then get bored as soon as i reach orbit and quit. Played too much for too long.

Would satellites orbits rise like the moon's?
kahlzun replied to Deadpangod3's topic in Science & Spaceflight
the tidal bulge is pulling the moon slowly faster and faster due to the difference between the moons orbital period (28d) and the Earths rotation: the moon pulls the water towards it, and the Earth twists it away, pulling the moon along also. Any satellite orbiting higher than geosynchronous orbit would experience the same effect. There aren't many satellites in orbits that high (i think) and the effect would be very small in any case, and would probably be offset by gravity drag from the moon in any case. -
Land 3 kerbals on the watertower.

H-O-R-S-E Challenge Game: Rebirth
kahlzun replied to kahlzun's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Ok, here's my challenge: Land Jeb, Bill and Bob on the top of the water tower. No time limit or other specifications, any method you like: just has to land all three kerbals in the one launch. -
H-O-R-S-E Challenge Game: Rebirth
kahlzun replied to kahlzun's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Ok! I'm now back from overseas. Looks like you guys were busy while I was gone, going to update the front page. Congratulations Sargent890 on beating 80km Monoprop challenge! Congratulations Claw on beating Climb-The-VAB challenge! Congratulations Tidus Klein on beating the SRB-to-orbit-and-flag-on-a-moon challenge! Congratulations Leibnitz on beating the SSTO-to-the-Mun challenge! Congratulations FlaccidUnicorn on beating the epic-4-part-space-station challenge! Congratulations hawkwing on beating EVA-while-suborbital challenge! Congratulations Jimbimbibble on beating EVA-while-more-suborbital challenge! Congratulations pds314 for extincting the Kerbalsaurus! Note: hawkwing, as per the text of your challenge, Jimbimbibble completed your assigned task. The first post states you need to be careful about your wording, and attempting to find loopholes is half the fun! Here's me completing the newest challenge. Mine to follow! -
Hi there, despite being a spaceflight nerd, i have never seen an episode of Gundam. What would be recommended as the 'best' episode for me to watch to see if I would enjoy the series as a whole? I understand it goes for twelvity hundred seasons, if i did get into it, what would be the best series to start with? Cheers, Sam

Hi guys! Me *again* with a new design which I called "Flood" for reasons that I can't remember. My first design with a Mk1 Pod. Picture evidence: I probably could have taken this further, 3000 dV *may* have been enough for a Dunshot, but I was conservative with this test flight.

Alright, so the mass at 57km would be approx. 500T for the balloon material, and at the alternate of 50km would be 250T? (I've seen 'double the lift force' quoted here a few times), for a total 'city' mass of 100,000T. As you say, a negligible difference of mass compared to whats being lifted. Using the analogy you provided above, does anyone know how much the airconditioners on a standard aircraft carrier mass? I understand the vehicle is unlikely to experience conditions as extreme as described here in normal service, but it would allow us to see roughly how much mass we would need for the 50km approach. EDIT: Wikipedia comes through! " There are over 2,500 compartments on board requiring 2,520 tons (2.1 MW) of air conditioning capacity (enough to cool over 2,000 homes)" Not entirely sure if they use some bizarre tons-to-MW conversion, or if thats the power you get from that mass of AC, but it looks like the difference in balloon material is going to be a fraction of the AC mass, straight out the gate. Also keep in mind that AC is designed for terrestrial operations, which rarely exceed 40 degrees..

Ships designed for every situation. A lander that can land safely on any world, an IP stage that can transport you to any world. Launched from ground, I call it the "omni" system.

I believe that everyone appreciates your creative thought processes, and that you are trying to find a solution to a difficult problem. What seems to be the crux of the argument is the concept that staying at one altitude is in some way better than, or in fact even competing with, each other. Yes, staying at a height where passive cooling will work will simplify construction, but would require larger volume and thus bigger balloons. Yes, lower balloons will be hotter, but smaller, and will be very difficult to keep cool. Both approaches have benefits and drawbacks. Lets see if we can 'crunch' these numbers down a bit.. RuBisCo: What material were you looking to have the balloon made out of, RuBisCo? How much more would just the balloon needed at the 55km height weigh, compared to the size needed for the 50km height? Lets look at both 'current' materials, and semi-theoretical 'future' materials (graphene and nanotubes or whatever) AngelLestat: Perhaps if you were able to explain the processes behind the heat/energy transfer Angel? You have shown that the lower balloon is highly insulated, how much heat transfer (and thus potential, maximum, electrical energy) will you get from your estimated 100-66 degree transfer at the top of the balloon? Also, how did you decide on those figures? Obviously the heat in the balloon would rise, and stratify, but to what extent? What form of AC are you planning to use to cool the lower areas? Standard refrigerative? How much cooling can be provided can be calculated from the above 'potential maximum' energy transfer, if we know the efficiency of the cooling system: and therefore the area of the city we could cool to the 20 degrees you had on the diagram.

H-O-R-S-E Challenge Game: Rebirth
kahlzun replied to kahlzun's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
We seem to be getting caught up in the 'abuse of glitches' category. Can we try to move it back towards more accessable stuff? Ie: land on Minmus with a RAPIER SSTO or something more accessible to people who may not be familiar with the glitches? Or at least, give a brief explanation on how your glitch is meant to function (like Claw) Obviously, Claw, your challenge has been posted, but whomever completes it, please take the above into consideration.. -
H-O-R-S-E Challenge Game: Rebirth
kahlzun replied to kahlzun's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Congratulations, Claw. You have beaten the challenge and may post your own. SpaceK531, ttnarg: Unfortunatly, OhTehNoes specificially stated a faster infiniglider than his was required, so you have not earnt the right to post a challenge as yet. Holo: Actually, finding the loopholes in the description was one of the more fun things from the original thread. If it isn't banned by the text of the challenge, or the standing rules, it is allowed. Regarding your confusion, Claw: The standing rules are that the first challenger to complete your own stunt wins, however in this specific instance, OhTehNoes specified it had to be faster than his own entry (which he had made quite short: a difficult challenge! Well done, by the way). Your first entry would have been acceptable and won if that rule had not been included/enforced. The loophole comment from Holo was (i think) referring to someone stating they could drive across the surface of Kerbin instead of using RCS to launch in the (invalid) challenge from SpaceK531. -
Can someone check my math?
kahlzun replied to flyboy67109's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
You have to remember that Kerbin is about 600km across, so those 1000km orbits are actually 1300km orbits. If all 3 of them orbit the centre at the same distance, then you know the length of two sides of the triangle (1300km), and if the 3 of them are equidistant, you know the intended angles also (60 degrees). if one angle is 60 degrees, and two 'arms' are the same length, then my logic states its an equilateral triangle, and all 3 sides are 1300km in length. Therefore, your satellites will need to be 1300km apart. -

OhTehNoes, are you happy with Claw's entry? Your post was a bit grey-area about whether the challenge was time-limited or not.. -

I know it as a skateboarding thing :S I am open to suggestions as to how to reword, i thought it was pretty clear Also: I'm going to be overseas for a few weeks shortly, so you might need to manage the challenges yourselves for a little while.
