[1.1.2][1-1-2] May 13-2016 EnvironmentalVisualEnhancements
Tommygun replied to rbray89's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Dude, I can see my house! -
Just loaded it up, great looking planets and moons. I'm going to Pock first.
-
That pdf image file looks disturbingly like the map view in KSP.

Pessimism comes with age, some can argue it's wisdom. When you live long enough you see a lot of plans and theories come and go. The economic climate at the moment doesn't help any. When the world economy stabilizes, people views will most likely improve somewhat.

I watched the live feed. Did I hear the announcer say that the fairings (I think he called them heat shields) where jettisoned about 200 seconds into the flight? Are they released that early?

It will be interest to see what the methane detector picks up.

Captain James Kirk to helm new stealth destroyer.
Tommygun replied to Galane's topic in Science & Spaceflight
The UGM-84A model of the Harpoon anti ship missile is a submarine-launched version. It's pushed out a torpedo tube and it floats upright to the surface in an airtight container, then it fires itself. Ships and subs have their own advantages and restrictions so often carry out different jobs. I can understand the Navy wanting these ultra high tech ships, but the ones they have now will be fine with upgrade for a long time. Right now the Navy should continue to concentrate on smaller inexpensive ships and automation on existing ships to reduce crew sizes. -
This reminds me of those seam power nuclear rockets people where theorizing about back in the 50s. One of the ideas was that they could use almost any liquid or ice that they could mine, not just water based for reaction mass. You don't have to process the fuel just basic fileting. It's not the most efficient fuel, but if you can get the fuel off world, it has big advantages.

Jupiter-moon Europa might be covered in ice spikes
Tommygun replied to Crush's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I can think of two possibilities: Design a ball probe where the right side up is not important, just land it reasonably softly. As long as it can get its probes out in the lower gravity to do tests that's fine. The second is harder, but has a lot of benefits to other mission to other planet or moons. If NASA can get a penetrator probe to work and have enough worthwhile science from it, the ice spikes are less of an issue. I would be happy if they could just get something on the surface that can do some kind of acoustic sounding to determine the ice thickness. I think penetrator probes working in groups might be good for this. The impact of one probe sends out sound waves though the ice that another probe measures to get an image of what's underneath the ice. -
Captain James Kirk to helm new stealth destroyer.
Tommygun replied to Galane's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Well they named a US cruiser Cowpens. I'm sure he got sick of the Captain Kirk jokes back at the Naval Academy. I thought that ship class had been canceled. At $3.5 billion a piece, I'm not surprised they are only building three of them and putting the Arleigh Burke class destroyer back into production. -
Astronomers at the State Universities in Manoa and Berkeley published a study Monday, in the Journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, that at least 8.8 billion stars may have Earth-size planets in the habitable temperature zone. Sounds great, but is it too optimistic? Edit: by Habitable Planets, I don't mean life is there, just that they have favorable conditions. http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/info/press-releases/HabitablePlanetsCommon/ http://www.timesdaily.com/news/nation/article_7e67ff98-6e33-5896-8114-ebf4e39ed37c.html

Crane Simulator (yep, there's such a thing)
Tommygun replied to Rosco P. Coltrane's topic in Forum Games!
Well, I voted for it. This game might be good for a tablet. Something to do when you're on break. -
I ran into an issue with the bottom node of the cabin when trying to build this. The bottom node is quite large and if you use a low profile decoupler the cabin's node passes through the decoupler and attaches to the fuel tank below. When I tried to decouple and take off from the surface, the coupler blew away, but the cabin remained attached to the bottom gold fuel tank. If I use a large decoupler the problem goes away. I think with a smaller bottom node it wouldn't be a problem.

[Plugin] [0.22] [WIP] Foundations - UPDATE: ALPHA RELEASE 0.2
Tommygun replied to Sparkle's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
Well I just recently had a small base float away on Eve. I think I was close to the game's memory limit, due to too many mods, and the physic engine I believe couldn't keep up. Maybe this could help as I have had this happen more than once? -
I posted these before. Their TouhouTorpedo's Omni Wheels. They allow me to taxi the Eagle around the runway and to pick up and remove different cargo pods for the Eagle while still on the ground. They will retract out of the way when not in use. I personally think without an actual ground crew this is the only true practical way to do it. Could you add a low soft sound of air escaping and a muffled sound of a hatch opening/closing to trigger when a Kerbal goes on EVA?

[0.25] Lionhead Aerospace Inc. - Icarus v0.4 updated
Tommygun replied to Yogui87's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Eeloo: The skiing looks great, but the place has no atmosphere. Eeloo: Eeloo, give us a kiss my sweety. Jool: Detecting seven distinct green boundary layers........possibly the universe's largest algae filled whirl pool tub. Laythe: Great beaches, you can get a sun tan and frost bite at the same time. Vall: A bleak and frigid moon with no signs of plate tectonics or internal heating. Not unlike my last relationship. Tylo: Where else can you orbit at 12,000 meters at over 2,000 m/s. Really, Jeb has tried everywhere. Bop: .....She Bop he Bop a we Bop, I Bop you Bop a they Bop, be Bop be Bop a lu she Bop, Oh she do she Bop.... Pol: I want to sneeze every time I look at this place. Dres: This planet redefines the grayscale with some areas there is total absence of transmitted or reflected light. All dark and moody, like some Goth emo kid. Duna: Spectroscopic data suggests high quantities of hydrated iron(III) oxides Fe2O3·nH2O and iron(III) oxide-hydroxide FeO(OH)·Fe(OH)3..........Mmmmm just like a big frosted cinnamon bun.... Duna: The ultimate rusted out steam punk world. Kerbin: The only planet that has to take us back. Minmus: Looks like lime sorbet! I hate lime sorbet...... Mun: It looks just like the moldy Gorgonzola back at the lunch room. Eve: Hot, toxic air and a high pressure environment. Sounds like a day stuck in traffic. Gilly: What a funny name.....I wonder what it means...... Moho: Tiny burned out world in a lonely forgotten orbit with no hope for happiness.....Oh God I hate my job..... Kerbol: My Mom told me to never stare at the sun, now I do it for a living. -
[1.1.2][1-1-2] May 13-2016 EnvironmentalVisualEnhancements
Tommygun replied to rbray89's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Just down loaded Beta-1, thanks. Could I suggest that you give your zip files a more specific name than GameData? Something like BoulderCoBeta1. That way people won't get older versions of the file mix up with newer ones. -
If NASA had more funding...
Tommygun replied to Sax Man Aeronautics's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I like to see more funds to the SBIR and STTR programs. NASA could help fund new start up companies and pay them based on set goals completed. -
So Jool is ether a giant Chia planet or maybe that planet from Solaris?

[1.1.2][1-1-2] May 13-2016 EnvironmentalVisualEnhancements
Tommygun replied to rbray89's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Imagine using this mod to generate sand storms on Duna if you could add a modified reentry effect to add sand blowing over your lander instead of flames. Just visual fun on Duna, but strong enough to blow over a rocket in Eve's thick atmosphere. -
[1.1.2][1-1-2] May 13-2016 EnvironmentalVisualEnhancements
Tommygun replied to rbray89's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I have been using Alpha version 7 and now 10. On Kerbin all seems to be fine, but it does slow down a lot on Eve. I do have a large number of mods though. I also can't see the Kethane map on Eve as its layer is below the thick clouds. Unfortunately the base I was building on Eve lost all its gravity and floated up into the air and disappeared. Again I think all the mods I'm using pushed the memory limit too far and the game's physics could not keep up. I'll have to remove some mods, but I need to keep this one. It was a lot of fun trying to find a good landing spot on Eve with just the ISA map to see the surface. -
[WIP] Bavarian Aerospace: Tubes! (update9|20|14)
Tommygun replied to onkelsiebdruck's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
Just installed the newest version, looks great too. I am having a problem with one of the green nodes disappearing when I use the Hatchport-miniadapter. This may be an issue with the Kerbal Space Program's core program though, as I have seen this in the VAB before. I'll keep trying and let you know. Edit: If I had to guess, I would bet it is the six way connector. That has caused problems like this in the VAB for other mods and even at times the stock six way connector (Rockomax HubMax Multi-Point Connector).
